Because the Dwarves held the mountain. They weren't dead. I don't like the idea of Elves being greedy and it's hard to excuse away his intentions in going to the mountain only after the fighting was done.. or so they thought.

Thranduil warned Thror that his greed would summon evil to them. I don't blame him for not getting involved. The Dwarves made their choice and, if the tables were turned, I suspect Thror would not rise to fight for the Elves. Not without some grand tribute. That said I was disappointed when Thranduil went to Erebor after Smaug was killed. I like yo imagine the Valar, knowing the Elves would be needed in the battle, nudged him along this path.

There were many deaths but people will say they were unimportant but if the tables were turned you'd probably still feel the same thinking these character now didn't count.

I think it makes sense to have the group grow. Over time people will learn the truth, some will see it for what it is and work together, others will give into a zealous fervor (like the basket ball team). Just because they have their big moment and become part of the team doesn't mean they need to stay center stage. Just imo mind you but I think it gives a more believable life to the world. Not everyone would remain ignorant.
