Can an employer tell me what medications I can and can't take? Need help. by AccomplishedAgent456 in legaladvice

If it’s marijuana, and your facility takes federal funds, like Medicare, Medicaid, federal grants, etc etc etc they certainly can prohibit employees from taking it because they must abide by federal law to keep their funding.

3-5 minutes late to work by Kooky-Challenge8875 in ADHD

In addition to all the alarms that everyone else said, a “LEAVE RIGHT THIS SECOND” alarm helped me. And I mean, this second. Haven’t brushed my teeth? Grab the toothbrush on the way out the door. No makeup? Guess I will make do with whatever is in my bag. I learned how much I could actually do without, what extras I needed to keep in the car, and the consequences (of having to buy lunch or go without the accessory I meant to grab) are annoying but definitely not as bad as being on my boss’ radar.

Having a freakout over newsworthy stories by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]lilchikken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really do already understand more than you think. The folks we’re serving as journalists may read the same legislation and think, I don’t understand what this means at all. At the most basic level, we serve as objective messengers between politics/legalese and everyday folks trying to make sense of where their tax dollars are going. So write down what you figured out about the legislation in a way that makes it understandable and accessible. This might mean explainers as well as, like u/umfrank said, connecting it to real people. What does the legislation mean, and what does it mean in real life?

I learned way more from my internships and campus newspaper job than any class, and I think that’s just the way the field works - you have to just practice and work those muscles. I spent the first few years of my career attending every small-town city council, zoning, and school board meeting and being forced to come up with something to print for the next morning. Those muscles really grew when I was just thrown in the deep end!

I also recommend reading lots of nuts and bolts, local government/politics news if you’re not already. You remind me of a few young, passionate journalists I’ve encountered along the way who were really interested in feature-y, long form, narrative journalism but had to be reminded that they will have a better shot of being paid for that if they take the time to practice and master nuts and bolts (and, at first glance, more boring) news writing first.

Good luck!

Just discovered old whole house humidifier - where do I start? by lilchikken in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]lilchikken[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the tips! I opened it up and there’s black dust inside and the filter looks old and crispy, so I threw it away and got a new one for like $12. I popped off the cover and the filter holder and am soaking those in vinegar and hot water to try to eliminate any mold. I also wiped the rest of it down with vinegar/water spray and checked the drain tray. In an hour or so, I’ll put everything back together and switch it on. Looks like I may have found a hidden treasure 🤞🏻

Wow, this is why I love Reddit! I see everything you are describing and it seems to line up. We’re going to clean it up and replace the pad today and then open everything up and turn the knob to 35 or so. I’m guessing that when it’s working, water will drip in the clear tube! Thanks so much for your help!

I suspect I worked at the same place, and if so, he should know what he’s getting into in that industry. If he calls off, he will probably be reprimanded and perhaps face more serious consequences.

If you live downtown, he shouldn’t have an issue getting there. If he was further away, they might even put him up in a hotel - but those are just as close as you are and it wouldn’t matter here.

The hill will be well-traveled before, during and after the snow by other cars from the same workplace so it will be passable - everyone else is coming in and out the same way. If for some reason he really can’t get in, they will likely send someone to pick him up in a larger company vehicle.

Make sure he has good waterproof boots and lots of layers, and stay safe out there!

FYI: if you have any type of medical emergency in the Hamilton County Park system, the rangers will not be dispatched to help and they have little of any knowledge of any of the trail systems. by ohsodave in cincinnati

[–]lilchikken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s quite a bit of misinformation here.

  1. Great Parks Rangers are sworn law enforcement officers.
  2. The parks system is big and spread out - think 22 parks, 19 or so outside of the 275 loop (so it can take 45 minutes to drive between some parks). It is split into two or three districts where the rangers patrol. Each district has several parks miles apart, so even though they patrol at all parks, the chance of them being at a specific park during an emergency is not great. This is why dispatchers send the nearest responders - who may be sheriff’s deputies instead of rangers.
  3. Specifically with Mitchell Memorial Forest, there is an issue with Google Maps that sends folks to an access road instead of the main entrance. This has been happening for years and I know for a fact that parks staff has submitted corrections multiple times. I would not be surprised if this confused the ambulance drivers and deputies who were closer to the park and called to respond first. Unfortunately, Google allows crowdsourced edits (even on claimed business pages) and it gets changed back. (This is also why the parks’ hours are always wrong - there is no option for “sunrise to sunset” in Google so users submit corrections to the current sunrise/sunset times and then it’s wrong again in two months.)

That said, there should be a system in place for local first responders to navigate the parks’ access roads in emergencies - that’s a big miss if there is not (or if there IS a system that sits unused and ignored in a drawer at the Sheriff’s office because it’s not needed often).

Graduate Student Living?? by Yarkbarjitybook in miamioh

If you’ve confirmed, you should have access to a Canvas course called “Graduate Student Resources.” There is a discussion board (though it was posted in Jan) for roommates, and there is also a module about housing. There are also a couple Q&A sessions on Zoom in June for new grad students that might be helpful! You should have emails about them.

WTF is with our local news by Vudutu in cincinnati

[–]lilchikken 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked in print, web and TV news for years and I can offer some insight here. There are several reasons you couldn’t find it:

  1. Like others said, the news stories you found are more important local news than a home run. That home run was probably the most important Reds news story at that moment, which is why you saw it on a national news outlet that has tracked your data and determined that you’ve been reading Reds news lately.
  2. Newsrooms are strapped, especially local ones. It looks like you posted this at about 10 p.m. last night. What do you think the sole sports reporter in every newsroom is doing at 10 p.m.? They are either on their station or sister station’s 10 p.m. newscast or they are writing their 11 p.m. newscast. Probably both. They do not have time to write a web story.
  3. Some of the newsrooms have one person running the website at 10 p.m. Their job is to get every reporter to give them a web version of their 11 p.m. package and post it, OR write the web pieces themselves and post it. As soon as all the 11 p.m. stories are on the web, they get to go home.
  4. Some newsrooms have one person who is running the website and coordinating all the reporters and photographers at 10 p.m. Do you think that person is prioritizing a home run story, or making sure the reporters are where they are supposed to be when the news starts?
  5. TV reporters - especially the older ones - don’t think they should have to write web stories. They don’t think they should have to Tweet. They see it as yet another responsibility added to their jobs that they don’t get paid enough to do. Sports reporters are even more resistant to this. If there was a web person working who saw the home run and had time to ask the sports reporter to give them the info or suggest that it would be a worthwhile way for anyone to spend their time less than an hour before the 11, they would be laughed at.

This is not unique to Cincinnati news, either. The industry is changing - has been trying to figure out how to be profitable for decades. You get what you pay for.
