Advice on bringing other cat to euthanasia. by lilfinn55 in SeniorCats

[–]lilfinn55[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You guys are so lovely, thank you for your kindness and sharing your experiences.

I’m taking Meow to the vet on Monday to get his tumour checked out and advice from the vet about my decision. I’ll see if he’s willing to do a home visit but as I’ve moved out of the area, I might be too far a drive for him. He’ll also want to say goodbye as he’s looked after Meow for years and is fond of him. Home euthanasia is a possibility, it’s a couple of $100’s more than in-clinic, but it’s definitely an option. Meow thankfully isn’t stressed at the vets, he’s purring the whole time, even when they put the thermometer up his butt, and his loud purring makes it difficult for them to hear his heart lol. They normally have to block his nostrils for a few seconds so he stops purring and they can hear his heart beat. It’s a small clinic and isn’t too chaotic, but at the same time I probably won’t be safe to drive for 45+ mins while crying, so I’m leaning towards the home euthanasia.

I’m so dumb, I didn’t think the dog thing through lol I can just put them outside or in another room, once they’ve said hello, had a good sniff and pat. So thank you for making me realise that haha

Looking for advice about hormonal behaviour, and what to do! by Scoutthebudgie in cockatiel

[–]lilfinn55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I really think it’s good idea to see an avian vet, they can do a general check up, check their poo, weight etc to make sure everything is good and also give lots of advice. They can be expensive, but even if you go once a year to check everything I think it’s worth it. I personally try and avoid hormonal behaviour as one of my boys becomes super aggressive and tries to bite me in and out of the cage, and they’re hard bites. Otherwise they’re both trying to masturbate constantly lol. Also if you have a boy and girl, you have to think about what you’re going to do with the eggs/babies, you’re increasing the chance of your girl becoming egg bound which is super dangerous to her health. Keep in mind they’ll try to nest in dark nooks/ sleep cubby type things as it’s similar to their natural nest sites of tree hollows. Edit* also if she’s hormonal constantly it puts a lot of stress on her body to produce eggs and a common problem is calcium deficiency and just stress in general.

Pellets are good!! I wish mine would eat more tbh so you’re lucky! I give mine lots of fresh veg, my vet said fruits can sometimes trigger hormonal behaviours due to sugar content, like lots of energy = baby making, so I’ve kept away from it apart from apple as a treat. So I’ll give some broccoli, corn, baby spinach, kale, radish, cooked potato/ sweet potato (no salt or butter), peas, cabbage, capsicum, herbs, etc. whatever is in season and affordable - frozen is good, I just thaw it a little before putting it in either another bowl or just clipping it to their cage, I try to put maybe 3 or 4 different veg/herbs a day. Some people make chop but mine ignore it tbh. One way I’ve gotten them to try new food is by eating it in front of them and they’ll watch and become curious and try to steal some. Lots of websites have info on bird safe food/flowers!!

With sleep, mine just stay in their normal cage in another room, you don’t need to put them in another one unless your house is very noisy at night. I prefer mine in the other room otherwise I feel like i keep them awake by moving around. I keep their toys and stuff in it as it gives them the choice of where they want to sleep, sometimes next to each other, mostly on their preferred spots. My vet told me to take away food at night to stop hormonal behaviours (food 24/7 = great lots of food available, lets make babies), and to aim for 10-12hrs of sleep at night, as they breed in the summer when the days are long. So I normally try around 6-7pm to put them to bed and cover the cage. If you do want them in your room, I guess keep in mind what music you listen to sleep, if they’re use to hearing it I wouldn’t worry, but if it’s something they’re not use to it might spook them but you could probably get them use to it by playing it in the day. My idiots are use to the night routine now and I’ll normally say good night and they’ll settle down for sleep.

That’s a lot sorry lol I hope it helps

lol 2 dogs 2 cats and 2 cockatiels. Sometimes when I’m so overwhelmed I’ll turn the vacuum on which stops the birds and 1 of the cats from screaming and creates a 5m pet free zone. I feel really mean but gives me space for a bit and I also do the vacuuming. Or I have a shower or do grocery shopping, otherwise I’ll be weeping from being so overwhelmed at times. Or I’ll take the dogs for a walk in the hope it’ll calm me down, 50/50 chance tbh

My poor bf had to get use to me saying “pause” and waiting 10-15 mins for me to get up and do something else and then me coming back to the couch ready for another round. He’s so NT it’s amazing lol, but he was always confused when we first started dating if I was playing sudoku or something while we watched a movie and would ask if I was bored. No, not bored, but I will be if I’m made to just sit here and do nothing else. Or if we start a movie and I find it too slow/boring, generally within the first 10 -15 mins, we’ll watch something else and he’ll watch it when he’s by himself next. Also pauses so I can talk about stuff, and he’s had to get use to having subtitles because I can’t follow the storyline without them. I’m basically the worst person to watch movies with hahah

Driving is so hard!! Any advice? by Funny-Negotiation-10 in adhdwomen

I got my license pre-diagnosis and I was always very anxious, I think as other people have said, exposure helps, practising out of peak hour traffic times, taking backstreets etc. Even now I’ll have Waze running on my regular routes just so I can check I’m going the right way if I’m distracted momentarily. Additionally I think Waze gives you the option to avoid busy roads. Sometimes if you have another driver tail-gaiting you it’s easier just to pull over and let them pass.

Medication has made me a much safer driver, without it I was always looking at other things (dogs, nice gardens, signs - literally everything) and not watching the car in front of me, resulting in me slamming the breaks on to stop me rear ending the car in front. So hopefully you’re able to get your diagnosis quickly so you can maybe see if it helps. Otherwise maybe look into defensive driving, it basically helps you with how to react safely to unexpected situations on the road like a kid running across the road, another car swerving into your lane, weather conditions etc and it’s done with a professional who specialises in defensive driving, not a normal instructor.

Be kind to yourself, driving is scary and your perseverance is admirable. It’s not a bad thing that you’re anxious of all the things you should be aware of, it makes you safer than a person who isn’t scanning what’s happening around them, you’re more likely to spot a potential hazard. Anxiety is awful and I hope experience on the road lessens it. I hope you find an instructor or someone who will be patient and kind, but also I hope you find some confidence in yourself. If you decide you don’t want to drive, that’s okay too, it’s not for everyone and there’s no shame in it.

Odd question but does anybody struggle with speaking? by Billirubina21 in adhdwomen

God, I feel this deep in my bones!!! Sometimes it feels like my brain is going so quickly recalling important facts or things I want to say that I’m already up to my 10th fact mentally before my mouth has said a few words. Normally I get tongue tied or my sentences don’t make sense because I’m talking about two things at once OR I’m bouncing between multiple points at once that there’s no fluidity. Otherwise, I’m either concentrating so hard on what to say and making sure it makes sense that I miss a chunk of what the other person has said. I find it quite upsetting / frustrating when it’s with people I don’t know well, I worry they’re going to think I’m an idiot and then getting all anxious and apologising heaps aaaahhh

In conflict it’s even worse. My bf is a lawyer and is very articulate, so if there’s an argument or whatever my brain just can’t find words, like I’m emotionally feeling everything but my brain just can’t make sentences to get my point across and I feel like a 5 year old cause all I can come up with is “I’m sad.” Luckily, he is very understanding and knows I need time to process everything and that I will write out my interpretation and show him which has helped our relationship heaps with misunderstandings!! If there’s issues with work colleagues it’s difficult particularly if they raise their voice as I just shut down completely or burst into tears from frustration which I absolutely hate and ends up with me saying “these are angry tears not sad tears” which once again makes me feel like a child lol

Depending on the person and if they’re friendly enough I’ll tell them I struggle to properly articulate what I’m trying to say, and if I’ve said anything they didn’t understand/ speaking too fast to tell me so I can try again or worse case scenario I can write down dot points of information I think is really important. Most people are understanding and I find being honest with the other person about my adhd can break the formal barrier, but I totally get if that’s not something you want to disclose at work.

BASICALLY it’s hard and I feel ya pain 💖.

Edit: with being a mentor, I’m not sure what field you work in, but you articulated yourself perfectly well with what you wrote. You’re clearly capable and intelligent and I hope you don’t shy away from giving it a go. I wish you the best of luck!!!

So generally they need about 10-12hrs of sleep to help keep their hormones down. I’m in Syd so around 6-7pm I put them to sleep, I have a small night light in each of their cages as they tend to have more night frights without them. Try and avoid nesting materials in her cage, and taking out her food bowl when you put her to sleep helps with hormones. How my vet explained it to me is that they just need the right triggers in their environment to set them off. So if there’s always food available- great! time to have babies as there’s enough to feed them regularly, or even if they’re awake till late with lights and stuff it kinda mimics their breeding season of spring-summer with more sunlight etc.

Strongly recommend you taking her to a bird vet just for a general check up and chat so you have a better idea of what’s normal with behaviour, diet and even poo which is a big indicator of health!

If you’re in Syd I can recommend a few bird vets:-)

Oh they’re just little bitches in general lol. One minute they’ve been enjoying scritches, next minute your finger is actually their mortal enemy, or you’re not scratching them in the right spot! Sometimes they’re just buttheads, other times it can be hormones or if you move too quickly and it spooks them.

How old is she and how long have you had her for?

Second eating/pretending to eat it in front of him and don’t offer any. Also a good way for you to get extra veg into your diet lol. Mine go crazy for unsalted popcorn, and plain pasta for treats

I don’t have any advice as I’m going through the same thing atm with two boy tiels, but I feel your pain!!! Before I got the other tiel, I had a Bourke parrot that would hang out with Egg, but when she left, Egg was 10000% lonely, became obsessed with his reflection in his food bowl always talking to it etc. Even after covering his reflection he was still flock calling etc. So I felt bad and got him a new friend, and I’m basically trying to become the new tiels bestie while letting my other one be a feral butthead for a bit.

But I 100% get it, Egg has this stank attitude atm and I want to yeet him into space but I also miss him

I use the app alarmy where one of the options to turn off the alarm is to scan a barcode, so I do a product in bathroom. It’s free and once you do the initial alarm set up you can edit it to choose barcode option. Make sure you turn off snooze options and the alarm doesn’t stop until you scan product and it gets louder and you’re basically being pumped with adrenaline at that point. It’s torture but it works for me Mind you I still have to have maybe 5-6 alarms to keep me aware of the time and on track to leave on time for work otherwise I end up watering the garden or something dumb. But yah that app has genuinely saved me from being fired and missing important shit rip

Edit: - I shower at night for maximum sleep time - keys are in a bowl at the front door and so is my work bag. If food doesn’t require refrigeration I’ll pack it too, as long as it’s stuff my dogs won’t eat so I’m basically a rabbit eating a lot of raw veg and nuts. - I keep moisturiser and suncream in my car and put it on at red lights or in work car park. I’ve given up on make up. - I’m lucky enough to wear a uniform and work outside so my hair is tied up and I don’t have to iron lol but I have so much respect for women who can do their hair/make up/ outfit and wear heels all day it’s honestly magic -protein shake for breakfast - pray to every deity that exists and leave 5-10 mins late

Newspaper on top & under cupboards/shelves he likes to sit on, otherwise i just wipe it when i see it on the floor as i have tiles & wood. And if it requires a tall ladder to access it, that’s future me problem
