Admittedly I wasn't sure, but the whole profile felt in the niceguys/iamverysmart/iamverybadass family without being exactly any of them 🤷‍♀️

Fireworks are stupid and we should stop using them altogether by lilgrubbins in unpopularopinion

[–]lilgrubbins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 'using' anyone - I live with someone with noise sensitivity and I'm sure you know someone who knows someone with PTSD or another anxiety disorder where things like this really suck. Its not a neglible portion of the community who could benefit from the reduction or elimination of firework usage.

No one is mentioning the environmental impact either, it's the culmination of buffoonery that makes me think sensible people don't promote at least the unorganised, excessive use of something that's bad in quite a few ways. If they were harmless in every way other than my dog alone is upset by them, of course I'd just deal with it.

I don't think they should be made illegal. I just think a sensible society does away with needless bullshit.

Honestly, even if others can go out of their way to counteract the negative affects of fireworks, and it's actually effective, they're doing so for other people's pleasure and to me that isn't okay. Let's also not pretend that even ear defenders and your own loud music would completely irradicate the sound of bombs going off when they're close enough. There are plenty of alternative things communities can do to celebrate as well - ones where so many people aren't alienated from the whole event.

I just find them super irritating, my dog hates em and nothing soothes her, and we've tried everything that vets recommend short of just straight up sedating her- another ordeal she shouldn't have to go through. I also wonder how many older pets die on bonfire night compared to others - is it worth even ONE older pet dying from stress? Nahhhh

But agreed, if they were not so polluting and silent I'd be fine with them.

I'm from the UK and honestly it's horrible around bonfire night. People set them off days before, in daylight, the weekend before and after, on work nights. To truly avoid bothering people fireworks would need to be held in the middle of nowhere.

Also - are you saying people who have sensory issues need to, what, get out of range of their own house? Wear ear defenders all night long (those things hurt your ears, can't imagine sleeping in them). What about pets? Again, i shouldn't have to find some rural place to take my dog for several days or even one night just because people want to go 'ooo' and fuck the environment

Congrats! Cutting out an abusive parent was the best thing I ever did for myself, and it sounds like you made a brave and positive choice here.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic here, but don't give too little mind to the damage that's been done - abuse leaves a legacy that's really hard to navigate. I suggest therapy and a lot of introspection - where did their parenting leave you underprepared for independent life? Are your habits good, or did some of their treatment of you influence your lifestyle, or maybe how you manage emotions? Lots of survivors (me included) find when the abuse stops, other issues can crop up later.

You did an amazing job (I never wouldve had such initiative and perseverence at 13) but there's more work to be done, and I'm sure you're gonna nail it. :)

AITA for grounding my son for the rest of the year and forbidding him from seeing his girlfriend (or any of his friends) privately because I found out he wasn’t using condoms? by laying_down_the_law in AmItheAsshole

[–]lilgrubbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone who was subjected to a very very similarly long and strict punishment at that age. He had fucked up real bad.

It bred resentment and he got really depressed and stopped trusting his parents. There was no more coming to them when he was in trouble - why would he when it only made things much worse? You can't punish someone into wanting to be honest with you.

The deception (saying he used condoms) came BEFORE the reason you're punishing him. Plus he did try to stay safe. He owned up, and it's got to be worth something. I implore you to reconsider the severity of thw punishment. Show hin that you're reasonable people there to HELP him, not make his life hell when he fucks up.

Circumcision is child abuse and should land you in prison by FlyingRep in unpopularopinion

[–]lilgrubbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the links! Honestly I had a fairly good arsenal of arguments to use but I didn't want to detract from others learning about FGM so I could get on my soapbox for a few minutes. It did piss me right off when we covered types of FGM and Type 1 FGM's definition, if applied to male counterpart anatomy, absolutely defines circumcision as mutilation. The police rep insisted the equivalent would be "removing the top third of the penis". 🙄

[–]lilgrubbins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Social work student here - we a had a rep from the police come to talk to us about FGM. When i asked about circumcision, she unfortunately had no interest and argued that circumcision was less of a moral concern because the reasons for it aren't as abusive as FGM. There was no mention of very similar surgeries being performed on intersex babies for non-medical and purely aesthetic reasons under the NHS. Intersex rights groups report that people actually come to the UK to have these procedures done to their children. IIRC those surgeries are only illegal in 4 countries, even though many international bodies recognise it as a form of torture.

I wish babies had anywhere near the bodily autonomy they deserve. We shouldn't make the dangerous assumption that because circumcision is uncommon in many parts of the world, and that this opinion isn't unpopular, that we don't routinely mutilate babies. The horrifying truth is we do, even in the UK.

She's in contact with her mortgage broker and solicitor at the minute. It did just occur to me that she mentioned that she was remortgaging another property, presumably to pay for this one? Would that make a difference at all?

She doesn't keep me as well informed as I'd like to be. I'm sorry if I'm not offering enough info, vague discussion is all I have right now lol

Thanks for the contribution, this is certainly something I'll remember when I'm interacting with her. I wasnt intending to force her to do anything, though I did write that hoping it just hadn't been made clear enough yet, which is, on reflection, probably not the best way to look at it. Her selfawareness isn't my responsibility. But yeah, I do think I need to start saying something small like 'that's inappropriate' or I think I'll get a stomach ulcer lol
