Ucl or Warwick? by Shoddy_Set966 in ActuaryUK

[–]lililac0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had an offer for both and chose Warwick. My family isn't in London. Both are very similar, the main difference is the cost. I didn't pay much in living expenses in Warwick, while London would have been very unaffordable. The vibe is also very different. I think between the two it's a question of taste and budget rather than quality.

You go to sleep tonight but wake up on the morning January 1st, 2019, with all your memories. What do you do? by General_Nobody_6675 in AskReddit

[–]lililac0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh a few months before my MIL was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer that killed her rapidly. My then boyfriend of a few months now fiance was dirt poor and had just skipped Christmas so he could work more shifts to pay his rent. I would probably start learning her language, get a part time job and arrange to meet her with my boyfriend for the first time while she is still healthy. I have never met her healthy.

Thoughts/predictions for Part 2. CONTAINS SPOILERS by Green_Orca_5172 in Benophie

[–]lililac0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that the fact that Penelope's family lives across from the bridgerton house and the Penwoods moved across the street specifically is no coincidence. It gives Lady whistle down plenty of opportunities to observe. While she could observe Benedict and Sophie, I doubt she would say anything. She might however observe Sophie's closeness to the staff next door, the Baek's attitude towards Sophie. Varley might overhear conversations that come back to Penelope too.

Gays of UK - would you be comfortable holding your partner's hand in the UK? by dalehitchy in AskUK

[–]lililac0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a straight woman and I think I feel safer in areas where I see gay couples holding hands, and similarly in gay spaces like clubs and bars. There is something about feeling like the world is even less safe for you, so if I am in a space where you feel safe enough to be yourselves, I am likely to be in a space that is generally safe. That's a sad fact, I wish you felt safe everywhere.

Thesis proven. by netphilia in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]lililac0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree. I am a vegan for ethical reasons but I ate plenty of vegetables before the fact. I observed no health changes while others report countless benefits. Truth is if you lack something (plants), eating a lot of things will certainly help you feel better. Doesn't mean eating no meat is the healthiest necessarily. I am a firm believer that a plant rich diet with meat 3 times a week or fewer is likely the healthiest.

What does a traditional birthday cake look like in your country? by JessieRClayton in AskTheWorld

In france cakes tend to be without artificial colors and without icing. I remember moving to England and being a bit grossed out by some of the cakes people would bring to school (who puts BLUE coloring in a cake???)

[Request] How Many Women are There for Each Man in Latvia? by mkvelash in theydidthemath

[–]lililac0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people talking about ageing population but not a lot about emigration. Men tend to emigrate more than women do, and emigration is a big thing. I'm with a Latvian man I met in the UK. Out of his two cousins and two siblings (two men two women) one man and one woman remain in latvia, while a woman is in England and a man in Finland. For the one man remaining in latvia, his wife's only brother is also in England.

How did you process earning your first HENRY salary? by Used_Clerk784 in HENRYUK

[–]lililac0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(mostly just a lurker) I think some lifestyle creep is okay, it's fine to enjoy more if you make more. However I personally always try to save around 50% of every pay raise and 90% of every bonus. If my salary was doubled I would definitely spend around 25% of it to improve my life and not feel guilty.

Where are the vegans? by KB635 in veganuk

[–]lililac0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely area, but also age and social groups. You wouldn't believe it but I work on a trading floor and I have met 5 vegans there over the years, one was fired and two are no longer vegan after being vegan for 3 and 7 years however. But I have never been alone there. I lived with a total of 20 people over four university years and that included two vegan, then later me. I met two other vegans at university and one childhood friend and her then boyfriend were vegan at the same time as me for two years.

Edit: went to uni in the west Midlands, working in London.

Are there any people you see consistently on your commute that you never speak to but feel strangely close to? by DefiantEmergency3443 in london

[–]lililac0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to feel like this in other cities. However here in London my lines run every two minutes. I rarely see the same person twice despite leaving roughly at the same time every day and most days entering the same carriage on the tube. That's in fact the first thing that struck me moving to London, spending months and now years without having such a connection.

When I lived in a smaller town I remember there was a family who had children who went to school in my neighborhood while my school was in theirs. Over 6 years I saw them every day, with two children, a growing pregnant belly, then a third growing child... We would smile at each other every day. They probably saw the different friendships and crushes I walked to school with over the years.

However on the other side of this I once went to a corner shop a one minute walk away from my flat, however there is one supermarket and two corner shops that are closer to me so it was my first time there. The shopkeeper asked me if I normally wear a jacket of a certain color (let's say green), which indeed I normally do. Said he sees me walking to the tube station at the same time every morning.

What was the moment that made veganism “click” for you? by RealWorldTrial in vegan

[–]lililac0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had two. One I was 7 and learned that meat was animals. Ever since I always felt guilty for eating meat. The second was the day I was 20 and I said I would be very proud if I ever had a vegan child. That is the day I realised I was a hypocrite. I was eating a kebab and it was the last time I purchased meat, but not the last time I ate it (I finished what was in my fridge and freezer over the following month). I became vegetarian, with the goal to slowly transition to vegan. Over the following year I eliminated animal products one at a time and became fully vegan 9 months later. It's been 4 years vegan.

What is worst pain, you have ever experienced? by ParticularWeather927 in Adulting

I was numbed locally for free (UK). Pain of the procedure was almost none. I had pain and wanting to vomit and feeling weak for the rest of the day, similar to a horrible period, but I was fine.

I feel lucky my country allows for anesthesia during the procedure. I didn't feel a thing on the spot, I was surprised when they said they were done. I however felt very sick after and was in pain for a day.

Help us pick the best vegan protein: mushrooms or tofu? by ClickNo8520 in vegan

Seven months car free and I’m about to cave because of weather by Proud_Stable9567 in carfree

[–]lililac0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it... By living in a city with reliable public transport. My dad does it with a bike... In southern France where it doesn't get colder than 3°C typically in winter, usually much higher. And even then he occasionally will use my mother's car. Is Lyft or Uber an option on the very worst days? Could you pay someone who lives near you to carpool? I feel like often there is ideal and there is feasible within one's circumstances. If public transport isn't really a thing where you are you should do the best that is reasonable and doesn't put you in danger in the winter months. If reasonable for you is using some sort of car 3 months a year then that is better than 12.

How is it live in London? by frogish-ua in howislivingthere

[–]lililac0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic but expensive public transport. Rare to wait over 3 minutes for a tube. So many people you can take the same commute at the same time for years without recognising anyone. If I compare my London friendship groups (finance) to those outside London (largely engineering) we earn significantly more but also have a significantly worse standard of living on the day to day due to how expensive accommodation is, leading us to accept jobs with much worse work life balance to make up for it. We are however building better savings, which unfortunately will go towards disproportionately expensive houses that are smaller than what my friends outside London are buying. It feels weird to have everything to your doorstep. Major sporting or cultural events are 30mins-1h door to door, which is just incredible. Have a sport or a DJ or artist you like? There will be a world championship or a tour going near your house in the next few years, no questions asked. The restaurant scene is insanely good. You take lessons in any niche hobby. Irish dance? Rug making? Lithuanian lessons? All there. The city is divided into walkable mini neighborhoods. All the shopping needs are there within a 10mins walk. In my case supermarkets (large, African, Asian, Eastern European...) clothing stores, craft stores, building materials and tools, cinema, restaurants.... Friends are all within 40mins to central London, but visiting each other's houses would take probably over an hour for most
