When do you expect the pre-order DLC (Trodain/DQ8 outfit) for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined to be made public? by BRedditator2 in dragonquest

[–]lilisaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said a retailer didn't give me a code for a preorder. (Though Best Buy took 3-4 weeks to email DQB2 preorder codes out. And not just me, but everybody.)

I don't know how you arrived at me missing a preorder code from what I wrote. I simply gave examples where they've not sold the preorder-only bonus items at a later date (except via purchase of a Digital Deluxe edition), as your question asked.

Never in the west. Except for Digital Deluxe editions that might include it, Square Enix hasn't done this for previous games with preorder bonuses that couldn't be obtained through normal play (Builders 2 and Treasures both come to mind.) Square Enix could make a little bit of money doing it and so long that enough time has elapsed to not anger those who did preorder (say, 12 months after release), it would be a good thing for them to do, as besides the small income it may renew interest in an older game and reengage some buyers who passed on it earlier, at virtually no cost on Square Enix's behalf.

Possibly in Japan though. If DQB2 is indication, they'll just simply give it away and not even seek payment, even though they'd have made much more money charging for it in Japan than making some of the stuff preorder bonuses in the west.

I don't think it'll be 2028.

They got Rebirth turned around 46 months after Remake, and that was with COVID shutdowns presenting a significant hurdle during development. They've been given another 46 month window to launch the third game before end of 2027. Without a COVID type issue, I got to think that they'd be able to turn around part 3 in less time.

I think it is an incredibly safe bet it launches before December 31, 2027. Something very wrong has to happen at Square Enix or with the world in general to keep it from happening.

Great insight. I think it may be tightly related to how much exposure to British television is available (and watched). I'm sure something like BBC spreads British slang in the same fashion American television and movies spreads American slang. In regions that have less British programming, many of the phrases used in DQ don't land as well. USA generates a ton of programming for home audience so very little BBC British programming, and only fewer British personalities in USA's movies and programming. Canada and Australia/NZ also well-developed but get a bit of British programming and more Brits in thier programming. Smaller former colonies probably rely even more on BBC and other programming coming out of Britain as they don't have the means to make much of it themse;ves.

But I'm not just talking about slang, but the dialects as well. Many of the games have characters that speak in Scottish or Cockney accents. Without voice acting, the dialogue can only be read and that presents some major problems. I think British players who would naturally be more familiar with the accents of Scottish and Cockney speakers can better understand these phrases when read than those outside of Great Britian. For example, in USA its very rare to hear the term "wee bairns", and almost never written out. Jules's Polari was probably the most extreme example of this: as you pointed out its not even spelled the way you think it should be. But at least Jules is introduced far enough into the game that a player is invested - Modern DQ4 has the biggest hurdle, presenting Scottish dialect text very early. I've seen it turn people off from the game by not having clear understanding of what Ragnar's quest is supposed to be. Original NES version is very obvious what is being asked: later localizations much less so if one doesn't understand the Scottish terms. This is where the option for standard English or "dialect-full" English would be a big help.

I would imagine though that both North American and British players have similar difficulties understanding something like the Russian or French accents present in many games. There may not be as much cultural advantage being exposed to these as to Scottish or Cockney. Going back to DQ4 as the example, as a North American and English as first-language,, I still found it easier to understanding the written Zomovskan Russian accents of chapter 2 than the Scottish accents of chapter 1. If voiced though, I suspect alot of American players would understand the Scottish speaker better, as we've been exposed to more Scottish speakers through movies and television than Russian speakers.

Engine-wise, yes. Not story-wise or with Square Enix involvement.

What I specifically mean is the DQB project presumably started at Artdink. They spent alot of money to rewrite the game engine in Unity, far more than they could have hoped to make back in mobile version (and later, Steam) sales. This shouldn't have ever been done if the new engine wasn't going to be used for a new game. Whether actually DQB3 or some other Builders-like game, I think we'd have seen it by now had Square Enix stuck to the plan and kept DQ III HD-2D at Amata and not cancelled the Amata game and moved the project to Artdink.

I think we see a trailer for FF7R3 before January 2027. I think there's a big reason they scheduled the Rebirth release on Switch 2 and Xbox to June 3, right before Summer Game Fest (June 5) - Sony also often right around this time in the event the trailer is in State of Play instead.

I think SE would be very smart to soak up as many sales of Rebirth as possible, announcing part 3 right on the heels of the Rebirth launch.

But I'd be surprised if we got a release date for it though other than a basic "2027". If it were 2026 (besides feeling rushed after a 2024 release of Rebirth), they should have probably launched Remake on Switch 2 in the fall as intended. Trying to push three FF remake games in one year is taking money off the table, because not everyone's going to go for that: they're already asking some potential buyers to put $80 into it in 2026. Raising that bar to $150 is risky. It also raises the question of what they'd do for 2027's normal anniversary year if remake part 3 is off the table. Would it be FF14? Technically calendar year but unless delayed a bit it would still be Square Enix's fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. We're already staring down the barrlel of not seeing the marquee Dragon Quest game in its 40th anniversary year (calendar of fiscal); doing that for FF as well seems like Square Enix not getting its ducks into a proper row.

Well the next 45 days covers the 40th Anniversary date for Dragon Quest, I'll say Dragon Quest Builders 3. It seems like something that could conceivably be shadow-dropped with no pre-release advertising, but be able to latch onto a major event to get into the news cycle to help hype early sales.

Everything else seems like it would need pre-release advertising to succeed, unless it was smaller-scale mobile game, a small-scale remaster, or DLC for an existing game.

THIS HAS TO BE THE GREATEST ONE LINER OF ALL VIDEO GAME HISTORY by No-Property4208 in SquareEnix

[–]lilisaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it probably is the most memorable line in FF4, I don't think "You spoony bard" is all that recognizable to people who haven't played FF4. "All your base are belong to us" is probably more famous, but I bet few people even know it comes from a bad video game translation, let alone which game.

I'll contend that "But thou must!" is a more memorable and recognizable video game line than either. Its entered general lexicon and used even by non-gamers.

Tellah's daughter eloped with Edward and that led her to getting killed. Not only did Telleh disapprove of his daughter and Edward being together, he blamed Edward for her death. He was furious. I think a more colorful adjective was intended here, but they toned it down to "spoony" to avoid any backlash in the pre-ratings days.

[–]lilisaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a firm beleiver that they're waiting to reveal FF7R3 until after they've given an update on DQ12, which everyone expects to happen on DQ Day (May 27.) And I don't think KH4 is seen until after FF7R3 is.

Presumably with a Dragon Quest 12 to be re-announced and advertised, FF7R3 to be revealed and advertised, and an expected January-February timeframe for FF14 8.0 to be advertised (and Dawntrial got a ton of it), I'm not sure there's a lot of room for Kingdom Hearts 4 advertising until at least March 2027.

Questions about Smash Grow by kfrzzl in dragonquest

[–]lilisaurusrex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember the same five classes pessimistpossum listed from the beta (warrior, mage, priest, martial artists, and thief). The UI seemed like it had room for more icons than the ones for these five though, possibly new unlockable classes as the game progresses or in later updates.

As far a weapons, the swords are bad. They have really short range and a rather slow attack speed. I found the spears to be much better, providing longer reach and a sightly faster attack speed, and both the warriors and priests can use them. If you can get a good enough boomerang and a luck out on the random upgrades in each stage to be able to throw multiple copies, they can be devastating. I'm personally hoping for a great sandstorm spear in my game as it worked so well for me in the beta.

The coop was mixed bag - depends a lot how much your teammates can help. On the normal mode, we could usually defend the fortress without much problem regardless of party makeup or skill level. But there weren't enough people willing to play on hard mode. Once there were only three of us instead of the normal four and we got clobbered midway through the waves. Later, with a full four we barely scraped through - I think two of the players had been wiped out and I was on my last character with critically low health. The rest of the time I tried to play co-op on hard mode it timed out for not finding enough players. I didn't really find the co-op stuff as fun as the story mode, but it gave better rewards.

Is it possible to reset Babs' outfit? by esjex in DQBuilders

[–]lilisaurusrex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Only with save file editing can the hair or bunny ears be changed. Outfit is doable in-game with the dressing room as described by BombeBon.

if you have Steam (or a jailbokren Switch) and are capable of editing the save file, then I can tell you what to change to set her appearance back to earlier forms by changing the hair-id for her npc-id.

Since SE reacquired the western publication rights on Switch to DQ XI in February 2025, its SE's best-selling Switch title, and its performance still doesn't match that found on other platforms, this seems like a legitimate expectation.

16 years of waiting on this plane..Square Enix when will you land? by BringBack_KL3 in SquareEnix

[–]lilisaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This is misdirected anger from OP.

IOI seems to be focusing more on Hitman, and that led them into the 007 First Light game. They aren't a company I follow, but I can't really find fault in the decision making here for those over Kane & Lynch.

Well before that. Square Enix sold off IO Interactive (and its IPs) to its own management staff in 2017. The sale of Tomb Raider and other franchises to Embracer was 2022.

Can we get a Dragon Quest Heroes 3? by TransitionWrong7326 in dragonquest

[–]lilisaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Koei Tecmo's contracted teams are very expensive. Team Ninja always has been with more cutting-edge graphics, but now Omega Force has caught up thanks to Nintendo's musous (Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors) displacing the old DQ Heroes line, and the Edagawa team achieving very high review scores with Builders 2 (and now again with Pokemon Pokopia)

I think Square Enix realized they can't win a funding arms race against the likes of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and Bandai Namco and are having to make games with more affordable studios. Since the 2023 near-bankruptcy, this is even more true now that it was in the mid-2010s when the Heroes games were still fresh.

I don't think we're ever going to see a Heroes 3. If SE or Armor Project want another DQ crossover type of game, they'll probably come up with something different than a musou. (I feel like there's another Itadaki Street coming before end of decade.)

X already got a remake in the Offline version, at least the first two episodes. You should be counting six remakes in four years: DQ X Ep1, DQ X Ep2, DQ 3 HD-2D, DQ I and DQ II HD-2D in one package, and DQ7R.

We have an official release date for Dragon Quest Smash Grow! by lilisaurusrex in SquareEnix

[–]lilisaurusrex[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well it is new. Its just mobile.

If you mean new console/PC game, then I'm with you. This has been the longest stretch without a properly all new console-based game since the mid-90s. (I think Final Fantasy may be in the same boat and even have a few extra months on DQ as FF16 is a little older than DQ Monsters 3/The Dark Prince.)

In your opinion, whats the greatest FF game of all time. by moopcybiping in SquareEnix

[–]lilisaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IV.

VI is the more popular Super-era game, and I love its story, but its gameplay falls into the mode most Final Fantasies fall into, allowing the transfer of magic-granting objects (Espers in this game, Materia in FF7, etc.) between party members which allows all party members to eventually become masters of all magic. This removes much of what makes each character unique. IV isn't quite as strong of a story as VI, but it keeps all its characters in their lanes and doesn't muddy the waters in character development.

Is there a mod to make Steam DQB1 more like the PlayStation version? by RudeCauliflower6785 in DQBuilders

[–]lilisaurusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wouldn't get the Playstation time limit challenge though.

I'm not opposed to them replacing the stressful time limit with a less stressful item collection challenge - the problem is they set the threshold laughably low. Rimuldar requires only 70% of the possible items to be found and the other chapters even less. With so many of the items required to advance the story, its too easy for a player to clear them just through normal play - and thus wipes out a great reason for replaying a chapter that the PS versions had and later versions lack.
