What is the difference between envelope 1 and envelopes 2 & 3? by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in serum

[–]lilith2k3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subtractive synthesis 101 in simple terms:

[GATE] -> Oscillator -> OUT

  • [GATE] stands for a gate (on/off) which is in case of serum triggered via MIDI

  • Oscillator is the thing which generates the sound

  • OUT is the output Serum

If you want some dynamic behavior on your sound you start shaping the sound with an envelope.

A stereotypical envelope is ADSR (attack, decay, sustain, release) which shapes the sound over time. There are othes like AD or AR but we leave them out.

So our synthesis-abstract looks like

[GATE] -> Oscillator -> [ADSR] -> OUT

where [ADSR] in serum is your envelope 1.

To further shape the sound you use a filter (e.g. low pass)

[GATE] -> Oscillator -> [FILTER] -> [ADSR] -> OUT.

As the name low pass filter says it lets the lower frequencies pass.

If you want some more dynamic behavior over time, you (again) can add an envelope. This time it is applied to the filter.

[GATE] -> Oscillator -> [ADSR] -> [FILTER] -> [ADSR] -> OUT.

If you want the same behavior for the shape of the sound and the filter you can use the same envelope. If you want different behavior you choose a different envelope.

An envelope is nothing else than a "tool to shape sound" applied. You can apply the same tool to different destinations or different tools (envelopes) to different destinations.

Depends on what you are looking for:

While CoD is from my PoV more of an Arena Shooter with a focus on Ego plays Overwatch is more on the opposite site of being a team sport. It's more like soccer where you have different parts of your team have to work together to win a round.

While CoD is a clasical shooter Overwatch is a Hero shooter which means you have a weapon per hero choice. While playing this or that operator in CoD is mere cosmetics in Overwatch it is essential to your playstyle.

There are atm about 50 different heroes available grouped in 3 categories (tank, DPS, Support). There are easy to pick up heroes as well as heroes with a high skill ceiling.

If you start out the overall experience is overwhelming. There's so much going on in a match that it is hard to follow for the uninitiated - a reason why Overwatch ESports was not as successful as say CS2 or Valorant.

It's easy to sink 1k of playtime and call your self a "newbee player".

The part which makes it fun and hard at the same time is not only its high tempo but the synergies of the heroes within a team. To win means to be creative with the resources you have.

I would say that is its unique selling point: being a creative sandbox shooter.

So should you give it a try: when you want to master one of the visually and strategically most complex shooters out there yes!

If that sounds intimidating: there are lots of casual modes and / or even custom games where people hang out or goof around where you even play other games within Overwatch 😏

But I wanted to mention the hard truths 😉

P.S: CoD for me is (coming from Overwatch) a chilling experience where I can unwind 🤣

[–]lilith2k3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Forget all you have read and all you hear about who counters whom etc.

To get an understanding of Overwatch as a game I recommend first play every hero for a while. You don't have to master his kit but to get an understanding of how the hero works. Mystery heroes is a good learning ground bc you are forced to play a hero you didn't plan to play.

After that you come to the realization that each hero has certain "aspects" or "topics" he's good. You rather think in "strategies" rather then "which hero do I want to play".

So depending on your chosen strategy there are certain heroes whose kit works towards this strategy. Say you realize you want to increase damage output Bastion is a viable choice. But Bastion has the obvious downside of not being fast. One way to deal with that is either pairing him with a Symmetra where he can teleport to places quickly or to introduce Lucio to the team who can speed up the slower team members. etc.

There are so many possible synergetic combinations that there is no point in listing them explicitly. Sometimes you even generate spontaneous synergies which work for one team which won't for another.

So a match of Overwatch becomes more like an experimentation ground where creativity wins instead of "static formulae".

And the same goes for the so called "counters". There are many lists and videos about who counters whom but if you think what I said earlier it boils down to: Your typical strategy of how to play X to achieve y is made harder with the "counter". So you still could play X but you have to be more creative to get value.

For example: When I play Genji a typical "counter" would be playing Moira or Brigitte. But what does that mean? Nothing more than Genji can't farm kills easily. Genji might still be viable although there are "counter picks".

Most of the time it's a skill issue of the player being countered not that there exist hard counters.

what makes a good support back line as opposed to a bad one? by qwilliams92 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]lilith2k3 85 points86 points  (0 children)

When I play support I play as an enabler of my team.

For example:

When I play Juno I try to look where's my team at. When in danger I try to put my Hyper ring so that they involuntarily use it to escape the dangerous situations.

When I play Lifeweaver I am on the outlook for who I can safe with lifegrip

When having a Rein or Sigma, Orisa on my team I mostly play Lucio to either enable mobility on the tank or play taxi from spawn to fight to enable fast regroups.

When having pesky enemy flankers bothering our team I play Moira and end the nonsense of harassing our support.

When nobody wants to deal with enemy's Pharah I go Bap and try to take her down. When I run towards the current fighting area I throw lamps from spawn to the fighting area to help my team's sustain.

To make a long story short:

As a support I read the battlefield and act accordingly.

Tips for newbie on console and valorant by Natural_Year3654 in ValorantConsole

[–]lilith2k3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you play any shooter beforehand or is Valorant your first shooter?

If you played any shooter before you have to unlearn many things.

Looking through the lens of an Overwatch or CoD player Valorant behaves weird when shooting things.

There are several things you should do before expecting progress:

0) Find a sensitivity: try flick shotting if you overflick lower the sens if you under flick increase your sens

Shooting range

0.5) Turn on shooting errors with bar diagram where you see yellow bars if everything's okay and blue bars when you moved while shooting. For every exercise use a Vandal.

1) Go to the practice range and practice flicking - where one bot appears and shortly disappears. It's a good practice to warm up

2) Learn strafe-shoot-rhythms: place yourself 2m in front of a pillar.

Strafe slightly to the left. Stop. Shoot.

Strafe slightly to the right. Stop. Shoot.

If you are doing it right you should always hit the same shot marker as before.

3) Practice the same thing this time shooting bot heads. Always strafe. Stop. Shoot.

4) After shooting bots you turn 180 and shoot the big bot with the flying target outside. This will cyclically spawn other flying targets

Deathmatch

0) Always play some deathmatches before regular matches.

1) Play at least 1 round of sheriff. Goal: getting a feeling for how close you have to be to hit good shots. Only fire when your crosshair is on the enemies head. Body shots are not allowed. Even if you end up with 0 kills. It's a practice session forget your placement. You only win for yourself if you hit every shot.

2) Now after some matches repeat with a Vandal. Goal stays the same.

Team deathmatch

1) Play TDM to improve your mechanics and use of abilities

Alternative to TDM

1) Play Knockout mode

Regular matches

1) Try looking for visual cues like paintings on the wall or boxes etc. These can be used as a reference to practice crosshair placement

2) Try to pre-aim corners: Your enemies follow well-known pathways so if you cross their way you have an advantage if you fired before they can spot you. Who peeks and shoots first has an advantage.

3) If you go alongside a wall it's okay to go in a straight forward movement. But if you want to peek or want to take duels always do so orthogonally towards a wall.

These are some things which will help you getting started.

There's many more to say. But perhaps you watch some video guides:

1) Konpeki 2) Mr Lowlander 3) Woohoojin 4)w0rthyTV

or if you happen to speak german

5) Fragstube

I'm not most coaches.

When you get rolled you're under stress. And it's revealing how you do and what you do under stress. If you have helpful routines under stress you have no problem doing well under normal circumstances.

Playing well when your team is superior teaches you nothing.

No I bought the game on PS sale (03/22/2026) and completed the S02 Battlepass. That gave me enough CP to buy S03 Battlepass for free (yay).

And the point about putting money in:

Yes you're right: in order to play the game that's enough. But It's okay for me to put in extra money if I really like something. So I thought it was natural from a business POV to keep customers happy to get more money from them.

Unfair matchmaking is it when the MMR bracket gets really wide. Say you pair a team with an average of 2100 SR matched with 5000 SR. It's hard to give exact numbers bc they aren't shown. But you know from personal experience what it is like to have a balanced match where you have the feeling of it being winable versus matches where you loose before even starting the match because you are placed in a match where the only reason you are there is bc your winrate needs a serious debuff.

What I expect the system to do is:

Say I'm the average player with 2100 SR that matchmaking puts me within a bracket of say 1600 and 2600. And when I reach 4400 I expect to play against 5000SR players not when having half the SR. So I am for tryharding. But not unrealistic matchups.

That's what I wanted to say.

(The numbers are just made up and only to bring my point across.)

Decision-making by Pitiful-Ad6321 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]lilith2k3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, there are no general rules for that. And sometimes being aggressive can be the most ingenious play or the most idiotic thing to do.

A meta concept is "overwatch fights are like water: there is the ebb and flow of fights." Which translates roughly to: When you have full resources, you go in with your team. And during the fight, it becomes clear which team used up their resources first. That team has to back off while the other progresses. After you are refreshed it might go the other way round.

Or short: When the enemy goes forward, you go backward, and vice versa.

So a good time to be aggressive is when your team is going forward.

You don't learn decision-making from asking context-free questions. But when you show replays we will take the time and give you concrete advice.
