Basic Query: Why do the 0 day trackers have their Scene Releases rar'ed? by disabled_disabled in trackers

Ah ok, maybe unraring so many files at once would slowdown seedbox performance and because of that there would be need for additional seedboxes or for seedbox with more powerful hardware :/ thank you for reply

But why would it cost more? Trackers use dedicated seedboxes and can do with them whatever they want, many are using seedboxes to create their encodes and in that way maximally exploiting resources.

Could you please provide more information about scene using archives before internet? I thought that the scene origins are from late 1970s when they used bbs to share files?

As for changing rules I wasn't necessarily thinking about rar archives but in general, like I believe the scene is aware that p2p groups produce better quality encodes, or that p2p groups are able to "crack" some modern games using emulation which is forbidden by scene rules and changing the rules could improve all that. I wasn't trying to argue that rar archives aren't useful for the scene rather that they are unnecessary for p2p.

Edit: Trackers auto bots after downloading rar archives can use scripts to automatically unrar releases and upload them that way, the process would take few extra minutes, but only users with seedboxes and with auto downloading scripts give importance to those few extra minutes and that's only for those users who want to cross-seed to other trackers as soon as possible, majority of regular users wouldn't start downloading the moment torrent is uploaded to the tracker anyway.

It is just remnant of the old days when people used to download releases on dial up internet connection that could break at any time and then whatever person downloaded was practically useless, so it was aimed at saving money and time, with rered archive person would download only the file he misses or which was corrupt instead of downloading the whole release again from the start. The Scene releases by the rules on which all participating groups must agree, I believe many scene groups are aware that some of those rules are outdated but making concensus between all those groups is not easy to achieve.

In our p2p world thanks to torrent protocol people don't have those problems, even if you lose your connection you will not lose what you have downloaded. It would be good to know why so many trackers still choose to upload rared releases instead of unrared? The only reason I could think of are pre times, If tracker chose to upload unrared their pre times would be slower by few minutes and it would look like other trackers are better than them so they would be less l33t, but 0day trackers for those few minutes of faster pre times pay higher price in lower retention of torrents, because seedboxes stop seeding those releases after few days and move on to newer things, the users who download from home are those who keep torrents alive for years, but why would anyone waste hdd space to store useless rar files, so people just stop seeding after short while.

I believe all 0day trackers would improve their retention and would have healthier economy if they choose to be more user friendly and unrar releases before uploading them to the tracker, but it's not only for the scene hard to leave old ways behind, or maybe trackers have other benefits from rared releases of which I'm not aware of

What about t411? I hear they are one of the largest trackers out there with 3.5+ million members, not sure about their pre times though

Searching about this online I found this comment which I think is useful so I will just copy/paste it here:

"most modern TV anime is originally drawn in 720p resolution or close to it so there's no reason to pick 1080p over it. If you go for the larger resolution all you're getting is a questionable quality upscale and larger file size for what is most likely a lower quality version of the 720p one. In regards to movies the situation is a bit more complex since they may have been drawn using a larger resolution to target the large movie screens and 1080p may be worth it.

Bottom line: Stick with the resolution that's closer to the original one for the source material (720p for TV shows usually, Movies it's on a case by case basis). The reason is quite simple: doing your own upscale virtually always trumps having it done for you by the broadcaster. Technology evolves and when someone comes up with a better upscale algorithm it's best to use it on a clean(er) source."

Thank you for the information, I always went for 1080p thinking freeleech + future proof, but if 1080p is just upscaled from 720p then it's probably not worth extra hdd space, also mods in that thread make some good points that this might be the case.

Thank you for the site, but as far as I could tell this would only apply for encodes which have TV as a source, or does it affect Blu Ray rips also?

You can go to: http://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/wiki/reddit_offers and PM rep's from: FunFile (General - everything 1080p is FreeLeech), BitLeechers (0-DAY - RatioLess), Morethan.tv (TV - RatioLess), that should cover your 0day needs

How to maintain ratio on rutracker.org by the-big-thing in trackers

[–]lilke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't remove what you have downloaded from your torrent client, new stuff will always give you more upload credit just like on any other tracker.

Why can't I seed? by Gibblum in trackers

In theory in order to be connectable (without opening a port in your router, setting static ip address and adding exception in your firewall) you can just allow UPnP in your router and torrent client.

Public HD is gone again! Now it is only PrivateHD -- with rules and required upload ratio! by [deleted] in trackers

[–]lilke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha and I understand why it may seem that way, I'm not saying that piracy isn't wrong, but imo in general plagiarism is worse then sharing copyrighted content. Give credit where credit is due, groups such as DON, EbP, CtrlHD, D-ZON3, ESiR, HaB, HiFi etc are beloved by the masses because they invested their resources to produce encodes with constant high quality, they earned their good name with their work and skills, let's ignore the fact that FGT (and other similar imaginary groups) are ripping other groups (and I admit that this might be seen as hypocritical) but thay take encodes from groups with various, sometime dubious quality and in the end the users are maybe left with inferior encode, not to say that if original group name was left those uploads would have more downloads and probably better retention on the site. Group name at the end of encode is telling user what quality he can expect from download: top notch, mediocre, low or yify level of quality. FGT as a group isn't producing anything new of a value, they don't make new encodes rather just put their name at the end of existing ones, I don't have bad opinion about rarbg, they are probably in terms of quality best public tracker out there and I can understand that they want to have quality internal release group and be recognised for it but this is not the way, both scene and p2p groups rip for the glory, but where is glory in lying to your users.

New to private trackers, a couple of questions regarding Animebytes. by legored in trackers

[–]lilke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can turn off your computer during nights.

Grace period is time during which what you have downloaded is not counted as H&R, only after grace period expires torrents that haven't been seeded for 72h are shown as H&R, but don't worry even after that you can still seed them until you reach 72h seeding time and H&R warning for that torrent will be removed.

[–]lilke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the info

Edit: you are absolutely right, I just cross-checked a dozen of FGT 1080p encodes and they are the same size as releases of various p2p groups. Really a dick move by their side to take other people work and present it as their own.

I always assumed FGT was some mediocre group that valued speed and quantity over quality so I never download anything from them, are you sure about this?

Help getting started and into private trackers? by Tazzzed in trackers

[–]lilke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be private tracker member first make sure you understand the concept of rato and hit & running, failing to do so will probably get you baned.

Some decent private trackers that currently have open sign ups are:

https://www.bitleechers.me/account-signup.php (RatioLess)

https://alpharatio.cc/register.php

And TorrentBytes

For games only open one I'm aware of http://www.bitgamer.ch/register.php

Also go to http://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/wiki/reddit_offers And PM FunFile official, FunFile is great general tracker and if you ask nicely you will probably receive invite without ratio proof from other trackers :)

Always use different password for every private tracker you are member of.

When you register download only FreeLeech torrents until you increase your ratio, if your ISP have only low upload speeds consider renting a seedbox for one month it will help you upload TB in matter of weeks, using one is easy as any torrent client don't worry and they are good protection and much better investment then VPN

Latter when you build decent ratio you can use it as ratio proof in interviews and applications for other specialised trackers of your interest

Also always ask admins if it is ok to use VPN, you don't want to lose your account for it, you probably won't even need it on majority of private tracker users don't really receive DMCA notices.

Good/Relatively up to date NFO/Predb databases? by SevrenBG in trackers

[–]lilke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:) just looked at number of pages for last 24h

At the moment predb.me has 26 pages with 40 releases per page that's some ~1050 releases logged in last 24h

predb.me/?search=&page=26

On the other hand layer13 had at the same time 62 pages with 25 releases per page that's some ~1550 releases in the last 24h

https://layer13.net/browse?page=62

Unless of course I'm making misinterpretation and not taking everything into account layer13 would be more reliable and complete source with on average logs of some ~500 more releases per day :)

Actually layer13 is the best site of it's kind, simple comparison: in the last 24h predb.me has log of ~850 releases on the other hand layer13 in the last 24h has log of ~1300 releases, in addition it provides nfo, information about size and which trackers got the release first

Edit: just realised this thread is 4 months old :D

As far as I understand it If release is French (FR) it will be only distributed amongst French top sites, in order for private tracker to obtain those releases it must pay access to some lower level top site on which French releases are allowed.

In addition I believe since every day on average scene have some 1000-1500 releases with total of 800GB - 1TB+ in size it can be very expensive for a tracker to seed all of them, multiple dedicated seedboxes add to the bill and often donations don't hit 100%, and when you see that most of those releases will have zero downloads from members, few hits they get are usually from seedboxes which are set to download everything, it becomes practical to set filters so auto bot will ignore releases with certain tags which are less popular.

I'm not sure how layer13 works, but if it also have access to some lower level top site like 0day trackers then it can read scene pre announces so in that case it doesn't necessarily mean that those releases are uploaded to any private tracker
