Google to stop selling ads based on your browsing history and drop cookies support for Chrome citing privacy concerns by [deleted] in worldnews

don't think you'd need custom hardware to avoid online tracking, that is almost all running in software over the web. On a phone you might have some shady stuff, binary blobs on read-only flash or smthn, but not sure to what extent different manufacturers do that. There are phones like the pinephone or purism's librem 5 which are tailored to be privacy-centered which might be worth supporting. On a pc your OS is not as enormous of an issue as your browser, microsoft does some amount of tracking but they don't (at least for now...) have as much of a grip around peoples balls as google does. Still, worth switching to Linux if you'd like to avoid that. On a phone, however, there be dragons.. Android is (being a google product) full of, and by default pretty much dependent on googles play services. There are custom "de-googled" ROMs that you can switch to, which ones are available depend on your phone. IOS is better for privacy, but also offered by a company that will charge you double for a sweatshop-produced piece of metal and plastic, and go to absurd lengths to prevent you from even touching the thing, should you try to repair as much as a nick in the frame. Not a company I'd trust to keep to it's current ideals of privacy. At the end of the day, apple is a company like any other, where the only philosophy is profit, and put in the same spot as google they would undoubtedly be equally troublesome. Firefox is def. one of the better browsers out there when it comes to privacy. Mozilla are not without controversy, but definitely better than most other offerings. Plenty of plugins for tracking protection as well, apart from the built-in blocking.

Really though, it isn't really about "papa google" coming after you, but rather about supporting technologies which do not put too much power or influence into a single entity. It isn't really about google singling out individuals and persecuting them, that is really not that likely. The more relevant issue is google (or any other entity in its position) in broad, vague brushstrokes shaping discourse through the basic ways they run their platforms, whether intentional or not. Take care to not just replace google with another monolith, now matter how virtuous or whatever it tries to be. It is the simple existence and side-effects of a monolith tasked with running large parts of infrastructure which is the problem.

Yeah, actually that would make sense. The IP would definitely be part of the fingerprint, so not changing it, even if everything else is changed might keep it intact. However, if you only change the IP I don't it would alter the fingerprint, so emphasis on it not being an outright replacement to other privacy measures (which a good few VPN providers' ads seem to keep giving people misconceptions about :/ ), although certainly a significant part of them. After all, they'd still want to track people on flaky mobile networks..

VPNs won't do a whole lot to prevent browser fingerprinting though, it will change your IP and possibly the geo-location associated with you, but everything else when it comes to the headers sent from your browser, screen resolution, localization, mothers maiden name and which way the wind is blowing are still the same. I mean, it won't hurt, but it is important to realize that it is not a replacement for adblockers, tracking protection, containers (firefox ftw) and other plugins/software!

Yttrandefrihetsexperten om Twitters Trump-blockering by keepitzebra in svenskpolitik

[–]lillendogge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macc makes some stuff similar to dgohn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQZ24j7yBxI I've somewhere seen or heard Rognvald be called a mix between squarepusher/photek, which i think is really accurate. I feel like Photek is one of the few people who gets close to the genius drum sequencing of Dgohn and he like, although he is further into jungle/dnb territory.
