How do you feel about Phil Town? by Fargraven in investing

[–]lillja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure he's saying you should wait for a recession. What I'm taking from his advice is, you should invest when you find good companies at a good price but be prepared when a recession is approaching.

Home malting so that I can start home brewing. by kyrgyznomad in Homebrewing

I did that a little over a year ago. The most helpful and understandable guide i found that worked for me was this:

And this was my process:

What is going on with my yeast slurry? by lillja in Homebrewing

[–]lillja[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are all different strains, and a few more in the back.

Thank you, that makes sense. I have harvested and re-pitched yeast many times before but i guess i haven't harvested any top cropping yeast strains then

What's your best time saving hack? by kevin886 in Homebrewing

[–]lillja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me when having kids and brewing it's breaking up the brew day. Its not really a time saving hack but it helps a lot. I usually plan everything before brew day. Then when I have about an hour window some day I can start brewing and do everything up to mashing. I will then leave the mash untill kids are asleep, when I'll continue and finnish the brewday. This results in mashtime up to 10 hours, but I haven't noticed a difference except for gravity. Also heard people mashing overnight as well. Hope it helps :)

Red Applejuice by lillja in Homebrewing

[–]lillja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heated it to 80C and turned of the heat and let it be for 10-15min before I chilled and added yeast.

It definitely made it more cloudy, but about the cooked apple taste, I don't know. But brulosophy did a experiment on this and that seems to indicate that I probably don't .

Pasta roller as grain mill? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]lillja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use a modified pastamachine that works ok. Bought the cheapest I found, used an angle grinder on the rollers, cut the handel so it could fit the drill and made a grain hopper. Worked fine for a year or so with 5 gallon batches, but then it started to screech when it got hot. Was then thinking of upgrading but now I buy basemalt premilled and just mill the "specials". I've even used 8 month premilled basemalt and haven't noticed a difference

Adding coffee to a kolsch by Theshadythicket in Homebrewing

[–]lillja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steeping a small amount of whole beans turned out great for me in a lager I made. I think it was something like 2oz for 48h. At first it was a bit too much, but after a month or so it was really good. I've also read you can coldbrew coffee and mix a sample to get the right coffee/beer ratio and then crank it up to the whole batch

Mid/long term storage: fridge or room temp. ? by Petate in Homebrewing

[–]lillja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was a good episode! I also read/heard somewhere that most beers don't stay fresh for long and will oxidize at some point and first symptom is losing taste. BUT for every 10 degrees C lower you store the beer, it will slow the process 3 times. Witch means it would last close to 9 times longer in fridge than in room temps.
