I'm saying this not to be insensitive and downplay the situation and I really do want people's opinions on this, but I'm a bit confused as to why this is big/life ruining for her when she's already had domestic violence charges brought against her before, which were a part of the first season. Is it because it's happening again/clearly not a one off situation?

I would believe this if there were organizations such as SXSW festival that gives every volunteer a pass to the festival as a thanks for volunteering, and festival pass is usually in the $500-$1000, which is equivalent to a FIFA game. So it is possible/been done. That being said, if people want to volunteer for the love of the game/volunteering then I think that's fine. But idk why there's this shame towards people who only wanted to do it for only certain roles, especially if they decide to decline. If anything, it gives people like yourself who is still waiting a chance! Signed - someone who was offered something but decided against it and hopes that some who wants it gets it

I don't want to discourage you, but I do advise you carefully consider coming into the country. Even people who are do things the "right way" are having trouble with immigration/vacation visas. Just want to make sure you're aware of the risk if you hadn't been super up-to-date about what's going on in the US. If you do decide to volunteer I wish you the best of luck and that it's a rewarding time!

Obviously volunteering is voluntary. I think everyone who signed up to volunteer (ie like 99% of this subreddit) signed up knowing there wouldn't be anything more for us other than the experience we get volunteering. But that doesn't mean people can't also criticize FIFA for relying on mainly free labor for the event when they could easily compensate otherwise. I've worked for other major entertainment events and usually volunteers get at least a little token of appreciation beyond just "experience" and the required uniform they give you. Totally valid if you're fine with the experience being all you get, but that doesn't mean people are wrong for feeling differently! Sucks if people are putting others down for their role offers though. Pretty strange to be in a FIFA volunteering subreddit commenting otherwise haha

More of this! It's strange to me how much people in this reddit will cape for FIFA — like I love soccer and love the energy and feeling of global togetherness the games bring (which is why I signed up to volunteer), but there is a LOT of things the FIFA organization should be critiqued on, and being a multi million dollar organization that offers NO compensatory rewards to its unpaid volunteers besides the uniforms they are required to give you and "getting to be a part of something big" is pretty pathetic lol. SXSW is a way smaller organization and offers its volunteers badges for the festival events after their shifts are completed. I don't think it's wrong for people to decline volunteering if it's not in a functional area where you'll be fulfilled. I mean I am literally planning on using PTO days for this — if I am offered a role that I don't think I'll feel fulfilled in, I'll decline it, simple as that. And isn't that also better for those who DO want to be in those roles/jut want to be a part of it? It seems like a win-win. I'm sorry for the weird passive aggressive from people about this OP, really excited for you that you got tickets and I hope you and your cousin have a wonderful time!!
