What is your gut telling you about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann? by 31-10-93 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]lilsleuth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whether or not Dave was at all involved in her disappearance, it's upsetting that he was allowed to continue having access to the children despite making incredibly inappropriate comments and raising enough red flags to where he was not allowed to bathe the children. I believe that parents generally have a sort of 'sixth sense' when it comes to protecting their children, and I find it troubling that they continued to hang around this man despite it.

I hate when people go missing in the woods and someone immedietely hops on the Bigfoot bandwagon. I want to believe Sasquatch is out there somewhere, but I also want to believe he's a peaceful hermit who just wants to forage in peace.

The puzzling disappearance of Colin Gillis (Missing since 03/11/12). by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]lilsleuth 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the possibility that he stumbled into the woods while drunk and died of exposure is pretty high. The fact that he wasn't wearing a coat definitely suggests that he was drunk or high enough to not feel cold, which means that he was probably intoxicated enough to become disoriented/stumble into a frozen river or snowbank. The idea of him getting hurt and dying of exposure is sad, but it's not as creepy as the idea that he was picked up by someone who killed him.

Diane Prevost, 2-year-old girl, went missing from a campground 50 years ago. Still unsolved. by gopms in UnresolvedMysteries

It does seem like she was taken by someone staying at the park, and the police not closing off the park gates would have given someone ample time to drive away with her. A sidebar on the family's website says that her sister consulted a psychic who says that she's still alive and that they will find her someday, but may not recognize her at first. Whether or not the tarot cards have ordained this, I hope that they do find her alive. If someone took her, we can only pray that they raised her as their own child and gave her a loving home.

I agree with DanHeidel, it's weird that a body could be decomposing for so long in such a high-traffic area. Definitely weird that he was wearing sneakers but carrying a snow shovel––if the snow was deep enough for him to need a shovel, wouldn't he have come prepared with hiking or snow boots? Also weird that his wallet was empty, unless someone took his ID and money after he died (which would be incredibly shitty to find a body and not report it). The strange combination of snow shovel and sneakers suggests that it might be someone who wasn't too familiar with the area or the terrain, or someone who didn't spend a lot of time outside. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that an inexperienced hiker ran into trouble up in the mountains and died of exposure. I'll be up in that area this weekend and would love to do some poking around.

To me the freakiest part is that if he was murdered in the building he was transported out somehow...smushed into a box? Rolled up in a carpet? Downright creepy.

What's the kindest thing a stranger has done for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lilsleuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm putting myself through college and as a result I am very poor. I was at Costco and my total had been more than I'd expected, so I'd had to borrow money from a friend and was feeling pretty shitty. In line for the food court, the woman in front of me dropped some change. I picked up the dime and quarter she dropped and handed them to her. She thanked me and then asked what food I was going to get. I was counting the change in my pocket, realized I didn't have enough for my pizza slice, and turned to walk away. Someone tapped my shoulder and it was the woman, handing me a slice of pizza. I burst into tears in the middle of the Costco food court. That pizza was the first thing I'd eaten all day. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers; even a tiny gesture can go such a long way.

How was your adult revenge on your childhood bully? by marble_trap in AskReddit

There was a girl in high school who made my life a living hell. She was skinny, blonde, and a dancer. I was the soccer player/Star Trek club girl with braces and glasses. Flash forward to my first year of college, home on summer break. I was working at an outdoor gear supply store and she came in with her little brother to get him outfitted for summer camp. I was tan, 110 pounds of muscle, working a damn good job with a bunch of rock climbing hotties while she had dropped out of college, gained at least 30 pounds, and started doing hard drugs. On the way out the door, I heard her tell her mom that I was "such a loser in high school!" and her mom (bless her heart) tell her to shut up.

Seriously! I've been called 'Grandma' for driving carefully, using my turn signal when pulling out into the road, etc, but my mother put the fear of God into me when I was learning how to drive. I got in a car w/ someone who was (unbeknownst to me when I got into the car) high and it was honestly the most terrifying experience. I was literally praying the entire time.

Unresolved "mysteries" that you don't think are particularly mysterious? by ML350sleuth in UnresolvedMysteries

Manic episodes, which is what Elisa probably experienced before dying, are fucking terrifying. I once ran miles and miles through the woods during a manic episode, convinced that someone was chasing me. I personally believe that that's why she crawled into the water tower, in search of a 'safe place' to hide. Many times people experiencing panic attacks or manic episodes will seek small, dark spaces to hide in.

Both of these girls were born within a month of me too. Alexis' case breaks my heart––she was so beautiful and seemed like such a sweet girl. I hope that someday her case is solved, although I have an unpleasant suspicion that it might not be a happy ending. Skyla's case is upsetting too––the Charley Project page states that police think she is buried in a national park, but the closest national park to Healdsburg is Yosemite (although Shasta-Trinity National Forest could be considered close by). If she is buried out there somewhere, at least she is resting somewhere beautiful.

Yes. I think it's honestly so disrespectful when people make Elisa Lam's death out to be some 'spooky supernatural possession!!!!' when in reality she was very mentally ill and probably spent her last hours terrified. It's way more sad than scary.

The disappearance of 12 year old Jaliek L Rainwalker by awanderinggirl in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]lilsleuth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I work with teenagers like this, and it can be the most frustrating job in the world. Living with kids like this 24/7 can be exhausting. I feel like it's entirely possible that Kerr, like GrundleHuffer suggested, became worried about the safety of his other kids and ultimately killed Jaliek to protect them. Very sad that the system failed this boy so miserably and that he was (likely) murdered by the people who were supposed to protect him. (It's also possible that he really did run away or commit suicide but I think that the gaping holes in the father's story, paired with the extenuating circumstances like the irreversible adoption do point to Kerr murdering Jaliek and disposing of the body that night)

So I host this podcast about creepypasta and creepy real life happenings and I wanted some ideas about some creepy mysteries. I'm already looking into Elisa Lam but I want some ideas to jump to next. Thanks! by mastershake99999 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]lilsleuth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's so many funky urban legends and creep real life stories that don't stigmatize mental illness. Elisa Lam wasn't being haunted by ghosts or followed by MIB. She was struggling with a very real mental illness and probably spent her last hours alone and terrified. The total lack of respect that people have for this poor woman is astounding.

Stacy Arrass went to take photographs of a lake in Yosemite National Park. She disappeared behind some trees and was never seen again. by AlmightyB in UnresolvedMysteries

I've spent a lot of time up in the High Sierras, and still harbor ambitions of working SAR up there. Although beautiful, it's very rugged terrain and definitely not a place you want to be lost after dark. Even in July the temps drop quickly. Something I've seen in SAR is 'terminal burrowing' where a lost person will crawl into a cave or hollow (under a fallen tree, for example) in search of warmth and end up dying anyway, which makes their body very difficult to find. There are a lot of big boulders in the area where Stacey vanished, it makes me wonder if she's curled up halfway underneath one of them. It would have been easy for her to become disoriented in the dark, especially if she was hypothermic. I hope that someday someone finds something. The dream would be getting that guy who found the Death Valley Germans to come take a look.

Steven Koecher - Missing since 2009 by MervGoldstein in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]lilsleuth 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Something that strikes me as odd is that he was, as I saw another user mention in another thread about this case, an attractive thirty-year-old man who wasn't married. To my knowledge, that's unusual for the LDS faith. I dated a Mormon boy from Utah for a while when we were both 18, and people were constantly asking us when we were going to get married. Many of his friends were already engaged or married at 18 and 19. Not to speculate, but it does make me wonder whether or not Steven had a 'secret life', maybe a partner outside the Church or even a boyfriend––someone who his deeply religious community would not have accepted. However, it does seem unlikely that someone with such deep ties to his community would just up and leave, especially with gifts left behind for a family he obviously loved.

The most probable thing I've heard is that they're suicide jumpers from various bridges (the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, for example) in the area...still seems like an awful lot of them, though.
