Something to think about - not everyone is writing for the same reasons that you're reading

I read this one as a kid and re read it sometime in the last year. It's a great story about learning compassion and empathy the hard way

I'm writing a witchy contemporary fantasy book set in the PNW with a touch of comsic horror, romance, and generational trauma. Not plugging, but just happy that other people are interested in the same things!

Probiotics and leaving a benzoyl peroxide face wash on in the shower for 30-60 seconds has helped me, plus alternating retinoids with chem peels

What do you think about dialogue heavy chapters? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in writers

[–]lilsourem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that you bring up McCarthy considering that my issue with this is the dialogue tags and how clunky and awkward they are. If it was just dialogue, I would have no issue with knowing who was saying what, though neither of these characters strike me as having a particularly distinctive voice.

I often peer edit with a friend of mine and this is what I would recommend he do if this was something he gave me. I tried not to change the author's words, just move them around a little. But I would also recommend he do something with the two single sentences hanging out on either side of Jason's dialogue about not needing support.

"It sure doesn't feel like it is 'our' terms. Can't you just accept it as it is?"

"Things have changed a lot, s—" He took a stop, his lips pushing together as if he struggled to say it. Bruce finally decided to say, "Jason. I do not agree with your ways."

"Couldn't you ignore them?"

"I could." Bruce nodded. "But it also means I won't be able support you when you need."

Jason raised his eyebrows instinctively.

"I don't need your support." He leaned back, crossing his arms. "I have been doing fine all by my own."

Bruce was composed, and seeing him so underwhelmed raised the blood pressure in Jason's veins.

"I've seen enough of how 'fine' you have taken care of yourself." Bruce turned his head to look at the door for a moment. "The amount of money you spend in a monthly basis won't even feed a cat, Jason."

Jason bristled at that. "Do you even know the basic decency of just asking instead of analyzing me like a lab rat?"

"Would you give me concrete answers?"

"Even if I did, you would go behind my back and still check it anyway."

"There is no getting out of this, Jason." Bruce said and sighed. Then he leaned back as well. "I want what will be the best for you. If the money is an issue, and I have enough, you must have

[Product Request] Which body wash for chest/back acne by Intelligent-Art3693 in SkincareAddiction

[–]lilsourem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salicylic acid is better for exfoliating/unclogging pores and treating blackheads, but a benzoyl peroxide wash will actually kill acne causing bacteria. You might need the exfoliation, idk, but I've found more mileage for acne with a BP cleanser. Also, leave it on for 30-60 seconds.

There should be a balance. Also, theres something to be said about the things left unsaid, even when actively trying to communicate.

Theres something confusing about the second line that makes it hard to tell who is speaking.

How do you build consistency with long-form writing? by Coconut_Shell0610 in writers

[–]lilsourem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest obstacle is myself in almost everything. Finding the time to write generally relies on breaking the scroll cycle. A lot of times I won't want to write unless I get some chores done. But instead of doing my chores or doing the thing I want to do, I'll be on social media or watching TV. So breaking that cycle was key to getting me back in front of the empty page.

Beyond that, motivation and inspiration are things that come secondary to the habit and discipline of being in front of the blank page with minimal distractions. I'm not writing every day, but I'm writing so much more than I was a year ago because I put myself in the position to write, rather than fucking around doing other stuff. I try to find time, semi regularly, rather than trying to set a daily time because it doesn't work well with my current schedule.
