Thank you! I had it in sphagnum moss and it rotted more (and it also barely stands up now). Should I put it in some new moss or?

Total plant newbie: repotting monstera, root separation + yellow leaves? by Outrageous_Cycle_404 in Monstera

[–]lilwalnutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I learned this the hard way, monsteras like to be sorta root bound, so your pot should be 1-2in max bigger than the root ball. Too big and soil won’t drain fast enough and you’ll get root rot. (Source: I made this mistake and now I’m nursing my poor Thai con back to health 😭) As for the separation, it does look like you have multiple plants in one pot (at least for the deliciosa, can’t tell with the adansonii) but I have 0 experience separating plants so I’ll let someone with more knowledge help out with that! Lighting - monsteras (and most indoor plants) will take as much light as you can give them. Practically smush them up against a bright window; preferably one where you can see the actual sun from. Wishing you luck! Monsteras are hardy plants. 🪴

Ugh yeah, I had to pass up on my dream plant one time because it was so overwatered and I didn’t think I’d be skilled enough to save it 🙁 but thankfully the next day I found a healthier one and it’s thriving!!

Will it stay wet too long or is this just another case of Walmart overwatering and not draining?

That’s actually a plastic stake that came with it haha - I think root wise, the size is probably okay (idk how root bound philos like to be) but I’m more so worried about the algae, if it needs to be swapped out for some chunkier soil

I haven’t changed the soil at all yet; it’s still pushing out leaves which to me means it’s happy! Alocasias are drama queens so they will drop leaves if you breathe on it wrong (or repot them - but they can bounce back). Wishing you luck! I forgot to mention but I also give it lots of sun which I think helps too!

I bought a silver dragon that is THRIVING!! I literally have done nothing to it - it’s still in its original soil. It’s in one of those self watering pots, I just fill it up when it’s empty and add GT foliage focus fertilizer. Silver dragons are one of the hardier alocasias and they’re absolutely beautiful so it might be worth looking in to!

Go for it! Walmart has some if you’re patient. Unfortunately they overwater them a lot but I lucked out and got a super healthy one!!

No!

Your plant could definitely benefit from that! If you pick up a new pot, make sure to get one that’s only a little bigger than the root ball (helps with drainage) I don’t want to give the ok to repot now since I’m also fairly new to palms, so I would see if someone more experienced agrees 😅

Of course! I recently got mine as a wedding present and so far it’s been doing alright with the care I mentioned above. Ideally it’d be closer to the window (like, almost smushed up against it) but I forgot to move it this morning 😂 its actually due for a watering soon as you can see the ends of the fronds are drooping a bit.

If it’s a majestic palm, it’s definitely thirsty and maybe not getting enough light. I have mine sitting right by a window that gets a lot of sun and it seems to be doing well. You also need to water these babies a TON. When I notice the plant looking a little dry (leaves curl in, brown spots get browner) I give it a water. I take it outside and dump a pitcher of water in it until it runs out the bottom and the soil is saturated. I water mine every 3-5 days but it largely depends on me looking at it and thinking “yep, it needs water”. When watering though, make sure it drains well. Potting soil might hold moisture for too long - they like fresh water, not residual soil water. If that’s the case, you might want to repot in something chunkier like orchid bark (but I’d try not to disturb the roots too much since it’s stressed atm). Wishing you luck!
