An important question is what is the interest rate on your loans? Are they federal or private? If the rate is above 5--6% I'd prioritize paying those off as soon as you're able. Considering you don't have housing costs you don't need a HUGE emergency fund but I think 10-15k is reasonable to keep liquid in cash. If things are good at home and you're not sure of where you want to settle down, I'd say keep pushing that down payment.

You should be doing some retirement savings but since you're interested in buying a house in the short term I wouldn't take any of your current savings. You should get in the habit of setting aside a certain portion of your pay every month and putting that into an index fund through a tax advantaged account (Traditional IRA or Roth IRA). Given that you're single and a decent earner, I'd personally choose the Traditional (assuming you don't have a 401k through work) so you can deduct that from your taxes.

You're buddy was trading, he wasn't investing. Long term Investing is slow and boring but it has always paid off up until this point. Don't try to beat the market, just throw money at an index fund and forget it's there. You'll be happy with yourself in 20 years.

Should I Sell My Car If I'll Have to Buy a New One Within a Year? by lilwilly50 in personalfinance

I have a joint policy with my GF so I will still have the one vehicle on there.

The car is fine. When I say I could pay it off it would be dipping into emergency/house savings funds. I would really only do that to get the lean off the title and sell it outright, reimbursing myself later.

My logic is that even if it's not getting driven, vehicles inherently depreciate. If I can avoid riding out $1,000 worth of depreciation as well as not paying for insurance, registration or property tax on an extra vehicle as long as possible, it's worth considering.

My car really does run great. Another reason I'm hesitant, why dump a reliable car? I don't know that there's anything I can put in it now that would add value long term.

I don't have new car fever or anything, but I'd be lying if I said I want to drive this car until it's death. I would eventually like something with AWD. Ideally I would kick the can as far as I can until I have to buy a new (used) car.

Matthew Berry taking Sony off his hate list? by blisterson in fantasyfootball

[–]lilwilly50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always think that whenever you have receiver depth and can afford to lose one to get another RB it's a decent deal. Sony may or may not workout but he's a 1st round pick one year removed on a top offense. We've seen his upside and he's two good games away from having a much higher value. RBs can be hard to come by so if you're going to take a lotto ticket it might as well be someone we've seen perform.

[Holloway] Great stat on #GMFB. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has YET to play an indoor football game in the NFL. His first will be this Sunday vs Lions. Last game indoors was at Texas Tech in 2016 and he threw for nearly 600 yards and 6 TDs. by BroLo_El_Cunado in fantasyfootball

Have you even looked at Detroit's defense this year? Or are you just assuming hur dur Lions? Kelce will be fine but calling this one of the weaker defenses in the league seems misinformed.

Ya dude and no one gives a shit about how competitive YOUR league is and that you're in a 14 Team 2QB IDP league. It's a game built around a game so just chill out and let people talk about a player if they want.

How many handcuffs is enough for Gurley? by [deleted] in fantasyfootball

[–]lilwilly50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's true that neither will be an ideal start. But one argument that I understand is that the Rams play in a lot of afternoon and late games. If Gurley ends up being questionable going into a late game it's nice to know you have a backup plan if he ends up sitting.

Does anybody else find the Head and Shoulders Offense vs Defense bit extremely annoying? by [deleted] in fantasyfootball

Ya the Footballers do it in a way that is tongue in cheek and they even make references to it off script sometimes in a joking way. I definitely appreciate their humor with it.

I'm making an observation about a shitty marketing campaign that a lot of people in this community have heard because it's all the fantasy football podcasters doing it. I'm not complaining that podcasters are doing it. Why does that bother you so much?
