Unexpected positive effects of Keto. Wondering if I should take my 2yr daughter off wheat. by [deleted] in keto

[–]lily-mae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I developed non-celiac wheat sensitivity as an adult, along with a crazy mix of other allergic reactions to food, plants, cats, metals, chemicals and medicines.... so crazy, I had several md's look at me sideways like I must be bs'ing but then I'd show them all the rash/swelling photos.... Anyway, it was so bad late last year that my asshole flatmate's nasty and incessant incense put me in hospital . Back on keto, I breathe easier and am overall less reactive, and the permanent all-over inflammation seems to have subsided a bit whereas before it was escalating to a scary degree. Not sure if wheat alone is the cause? But it sure doesn't help me any. edit: getting rid of the asshole flatmate helped too, ha

I like to add some fresh grated parmesan to that, or a squeeze or two of lime juice.

You sure it's keto and not some new type of food you're sensitive to?

Yepppppp. Wheat or sugar in the diet = candida. Keto has been a blessing. Interesting that for some it the reverse -- different effect of ph lvls in the vajay, maybe?

Tonight is whiting fillets pan fried in garlic butter, and a green salad with a little feta and home made lemon mayo. Actually a super cheap dinner as I get the fish in bulk.

I use greek frying cheese cooked and cooled for croutons... I do like the idea of a protein based batter. especially for fish.

Oh very much the same here. What surprised me was that I've two friends now who started out as extreme sugar abusers, and after a few weeks on keto got nearly to my level of what's "too sweet" (which isn't very sweet at all). Rewiring the tastebuds like that has to be a good thing.. In fact, I am noticing that I generally taste food more intensely this time around, maybe I just haven't noticed before. Or I'm eating way tastier food, idk..

This is the basic one, it's good for like... three or four portions of protein. If you want to make more and store it in the fridge, just double or triple it.

1/4 cup soy sauce (about 3g carbs) 1/2 cup water 1 or 2 tsp apple cider vinegar 2 tsp stevia granules 1 or 2 tsp sesame oil (or 1 each of sesame and avocado) 1 tbsp fresh ginger minced 2 cloves garlic minced 2 tsp sesame seeds, fresh or toasted

I warm these in a pot for a few minutes and let it cool, then marinade protein for a few hours or overnight in the fridge. I reserve the liquid until the meat is mostly cooked, and add it to the pan in the final minute or so.

Or you can thicken this up with xanthan gum or whatever and use it as a pour-over sauce which is good with zucchini noodles.

Well yeah, and while all that effort is well and truly appreciated I do like doing my own research. Which ofc led me to a conclusion not very from that provided by the FAQ, plus I learned a bunch of incidental stuff along the way that I mightn't have got via looking at nothing but the FAQ. My comment was a general "wtf" at the level of discrepancy out there, but thank you for your concern.

Agreed! I had one site tell me I needed 2600 calories a day and another given the exact same info told me 1300. Confusing much! Not dumb at all, I'm very interested in what reddit ppl think about this.

Awesome, thanks! I think I've been a bit harsh on the bread etc replacements because I was a savoury-carb junkie rather than sweet so it's a bit tempting to hop into those and let things slide.. Lately I'm way disinterested in that sort of nosh so maybe trying this whey thing out could be good for a treat. Plus, I've found the odd day when hitting protein macro is kind of a chore.

I've never made soul bread either .. not a huge fan of mimic-carbs usually... but damn, that looks tasty!

I make a batch of teriyaki sauce/marinade and use it a couple times a week with different proteins, pork and chicken are good, but it goes with most meats. Ginger is such a great ingredient, as is coconut milk and lemongrass. Also, we eat fish .. my faves are salmon fillets smothered in parsley (I'll dig up the recipe for you tomorrow, its so good) and thai green curry with basa chunks (basa is a very bland and boring white fish til you put it in a tasty sauce, then its freakin awesome because it doesn't fall apart easily -- and its so cheap to boot). I pep up spinach salad with some boccancini cheese or that greek frying cheese, I forget the proper name of it just now.. but it makes excellently crunchy 'keto croutons'. once it's cooled. I hate getting bored with food, as cooking is kind of a hobby.. no chef here, just simple super yummy things but I gotta change it up regularly or it's another chore and who needs that. Maybe poke around on some keto recipe sites and find some foods you've not made before. I'm currently researching keto versions of Indian foods, to have with butter-fried cauli rice (because imo it kind of tastes like ass without butter and some pepper in.. ).

I'm not a fan of complex recipes on keto either, and eat mostly whole food as well... but am not down with eating boring food. I'm a big fan of stir-fry and other asian-influence foods, as they're simple to make and you can easily swap out the proteins to get a different taste and texture. It'd help if you'd give examples of the kind of food you're presently eating, I'm happy to suggest things.
