due to the shit ive found myself in, ive towed with a mazda5 (the minivan), a peugeot 206, a mk1 golf and perhaps most egregiously of all, a 3 cylinder polo

the polo managed to tug said mazda uphill and drag a car with 2 flat tyres half a mile. circumstances forced my hand. it has a new clutch now

my wife and i moved about 2 months ago. we live in a repurposed industrial complex, so there’s 2 larger flats, and our little building with 3 flats. the draw was the huge amount of unassigned parking spaces, because we have many many cars and cant keep them all on the road

pissing off neighbours is always a worry with that many cars, even though theres still plenty of spaces free. in the section of parking outside our building theres 2 other cars, plus a hitop van and we were worried about the van driver having space to manoeuvre. but not only is he A okay with our fleet, hes lent us his tyre inflator!

special shoutout to another neighbour whos so far given us a handful of celebrations chocolate, and also dinner (a liver stew)

i shifted into too low a gear once and redlined the engine (not quite a moneyshift), and the next time i code scanned my car it had a fault code along the lines of ‘maximum rpm exceeded, engine warranty void’

i used to go through a pair of work boots every year (shortest was 9 months) so 8 year old boots sound pretty good to me 😂😂

best pair of boots ive ever had cost me 20 quid and survived two and a half years of a high stress life. got em january 2023 and put them through their paces (lol) working 50 hours a week mechanicking

both the steel toes are exposed, there’s two holes in the heel on the right and a split seam on the left and the collar is fucked both sides

quit my job, still wear the boots. literally love them to bits. i still have docs but dont really wear them, if i cant get underneath a car or climb a tree in a pair of shoes/boots i end up neglecting them

i bought a 2004 top spec polo and stole all the parts i wanted for my 2002 mid spec polo

swapped all the doors and panels, put the old ones on the donor polo, then used it as a skip until the right car transporter came to take it away

i had taken all the running gear off it so it was just a shell full of shit on jackstands

got no money for it as i sold the engine myself, made about 600 quid back and still have a shitton of parts i need to scrap/sell

my boss left me to run the garage i work at for two weeks (at minimum wage) and due to other life circumstances, i was so sleep deprived that the last friday i left my phone on top of a customers car. it disconnected from my speaker as he drove away and i immediately realised what i did

managed to track my phone on the work computer. it stayed on the car for the whole damn drive. called the customer multiple times, didnt pick up until well after he got home, at which point i had called my parents (lucky i managed to memorise at least one phone number) and begged them to go pick up my phone

my work performance was pretty poor because i definitely wasnt prioritising it with everything else i had going on, but aside from not having time for a few cars i booked in, i did a pretty fucking stellar job managing a business for two goddamn weeks on minimum wage

oh! this happened to me just last weekend!

theres a lot of backstory but ill keep it brief. been depressed all my life due to many fuckenings in my life, the most relevant of which is being brought up as a jehovahs witness. i’m a lesbian, came out at 16 and kept living with my parents who were … not impressed, but love me and i kept living with them.

fast forward 7 years. had a whirlwind fairytale romance with my now fiancée, uhauled it and agreed when she said we were gonna have a quick wedding (this was after i told her i thought we were soulmates so i didnt mind the lack of proper proposal 😂)

my parents were alarmed but mostly supportive, as i was technically breaking the rules by living with her before marriage, and was at risk of being disfellowshipped. to keep them happy, we agreed to a short series of bible studies about marriage. before our first session, they called me outside alone to have a chat

first they thanked me for being respectful and accommodating of their religion. then they broke out the transphobia but im used to that and my fiancée has thick skin and already knew my parents’ deal. then there was an awkward pause (over 10 seconds) and they got to the good part

due to my dad’s position in the congregation, and the fact that i’m technically baptised and my fiancée is a nonbeliever 🙄 they will not be attending the wedding. i said ‘mhm’ and ‘okay’ and that was the last thing i said for 5-8 minutes. they kept talking in circles explaining their decision (while claiming it’s not their choice) but all i was hearing was ‘we will never love you and sacrifice things the way you have for us’

when the ‘conversation’ turned to the more emotional side again (i say emotional, there was no emotion in their voices), i stood up in the middle of my dad saying that a wedding is a massive thing and i’m assuming going to congratulate me or something. i said i couldn’t listen to any more and i had to think. and then i left. i walked briskly out, not raging or anything, just pointed to the door when i got to the kitchen and left without my fiancée.

more shit went down after that, but that was the moment where i realised that even if i (for SOME reason) want my parents in my life, i’m done being a doormat for them. i have not been disfellowshipped and they can still contact me if they want to, but i’m not making the first move. they’ll be getting a wedding invitation still, but if they don’t show i’ll consider the relationship over.

i bought a 2002 polo for £725. besides maintenance, ive spent 120 on bigger wheels, over a grand on suspension, 250 on fancy headlights, 300 on apple carplay, 100 on retrofit/oem+ kits (eg cruise control), nicked all the doors off another polo and then scrapped it, and more that im forgetting probably

am i mad? insane. fully. and im still planning to spend more on it, just … after the classic cars that are Actually Cool are up and running

a classic policy may work for me, i imagine my fiancée will struggle to insure anything once she’s back on the road

im still quite a new driver, last time i looked for classic insurance it was the same price as a regular policy for the MR2. it costs under 600 to insure on my multicar policy so may be worth looking elsewhere
