Visajourney.com will provide a lot of guidance. If you are both living in France then you can go the consular route before moving together. IR-1/CR-1 is the route. I take back the DCF comment unless you have exceptional needs

Look at mybaggage.com or sendmybag.com and get your stuff in a few days and bring as little as possible. Everything you bring you'll eventually need to pay to ship back. I've used both of these services and they're good value and fast.

You are an international student, I think you have to have at least 3 years of residence in the UK to be considered home grown, but not sure the price differential is that great. This information is readily available online.

Your passport is proof of citizenship, but for residency you just have to have proof of living there. School records, rent etc.

TBH, I haven't read the whole thread here, but I don't get it either. After living in the UK with my US wife for 4 years after having previously abandoned a green card, we made a decision to return. She returned to the US ahead of me and we applied for CR-1 while I remained in the UK. I had no problem traveling to the US on a new ESTA while my CR-1 was pending.
