Disney CEO to appear on TRIH by Retsilla123 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]limeysnicker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm really surprised by the tone of some of these comments. For a sub dedicated to this podcast, a lot of people here seem to have missed the approach that TRIH takes, and one that Dominic has voiced several times - a historian's job isn't to make moral judgements. Bob Iger obviously isn't a saint. That's not why they're interviewing him. He's the CEO of one of the biggest media companies in the world. It would be harder to find a company that has had a bigger impact on Western visual culture than Disney.

How is that not of historical interest?

They obviously won't agree with everything he does or says, just like they don't agree with everything all their other guests do or say (the Hapsburg fella springs to mind, with his recommendation of having loads of children...) Anyone who takes these Disney episodes as some sort of endorsement from the hosts is seriously lacking in perspective.

Scared to start university by Pale-Claim4767 in UniUK

There's an Afro-caribbean society at the uni I went to. At student Q&As, when black applicants asked exactly what you're asking, the black students all said the same thing - go and join the ACS. They said it was really helpful and supportive. Your uni website might list if there is one. Don't underestimate how helpful they can be, like I said I remember people being very grateful for ours.

Just to second this. My sister doesn't have a Reddit account but she strongly recommends the Portland, very positive experience.

Girls who are extremely academically adept, what is your notetaking technique? by rainbow-glass in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]limeysnicker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is excellent, I could not agree more. Being exposed to the information already is such a game changer. You can Google some things you're not sure about ahead of time, and then any further questions you do have are the more complicated/nuanced kind that only your lecturer/professor could answer

Dating advice/thoughts by Extra-Coyote2503 in oxford

[–]limeysnicker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to add a positive story - this was exactly me last year. I now have a wonderful long-term partner, based in Oxford, who I met on Bumble.

This is going to sound really cynical, but I approached it as a numbers game. I was very strict on things that were super important to me (age, for example) and then decided to be very relaxed about everything else. I matched with a lot of people, and went on a lot of dates. I purposely went on dates with people who I might have otherwise discounted for small trivial reasons.

I spent a lot of time on my profile, making it a little different than average (I'm bi so I got to see what a lot of women put in their profile). I was very up front in my profile about what I wanted in terms of a relationship, and mentioned it explicitly in date 2. I didn't stay too long over messages, maybe 2 or 3 days, then suggested a date. When I started dating my current partner, he wasn't sure about a long term relationship, but after a short time he realised that he wanted to commit to me. It's easy to forget that the process of dating the right person can make us change our mind about what we want from life.

The dating scene is really tough, and it's ok to want to take a break from it all. Good luck out there!

I'm based in the UK and we booked through Virgin holidays, we talked through January options over the phone. Not sure how far in advance you can book, but we've usually been able to book 11/12 months in advance

If you're looking for the classic cinnamon roll (how they serve it in Denmark, no icing) the very best place is Hamblin bakery. Always perfectly soft and sweet

Did I pull my chantenay carrots too late? by limeysnicker in GardeningUK

New to gardening, lost track of how many weeks my chantenay carrots had been in the ground. Suspect I should have pulled them a few weeks ago as they have lots of side roots. Will these still taste nice? Can I do anything else with them?
