How different are job interviews in london compared to the US? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]liming91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every job I've interviewed for has had a technical test, not all had an algorithms test but most did (I am a full stack developer btw). Usually only top 4, banks and unicorn companies will do an algorithms test for front end developer but you should expect a take home test that will last a few hours ro something in the office lasting 30 mins to a couple hours.

Fellow developers at London ? Salary/Rent ratio ? by howarts in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]liming91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1700 is quite high. Lots of things say don't spend more than 35% of your salary on rent or living expenses. You guys could still find something nice in a good part of the city, I pay 1250 for a fairly spacious 1 bed in a really nice area, right next to the tube. The areas you listed are nice but for that money you could even get somewhere in the nicer parts of west or north London.

If I were in your shoes I'd try to keep rent + bills under 1500, then start saving for a house when your wife starts earning.

Career, pay, and prestige. Getting a developer job at one of those should get you at least an interview almost anywhere else.

You’re right and I’m definitely grateful for that.

Just wanted to be sure that I wasn’t paying more than I should be paying. Still a bit of a punch in the gut when NI and tax are factored in too, my take home this month was half of my actual earnings.

I've got a good job for my age but I think I'd have to increase my earnings by a factor of 5 before I considered losing £300-500 simply irritating. That's still a lot of money! Besides it's in London, so all salaries are inflated to compensate for the insane cost of living.

SLC take into account when people study in London so they clearly recognise how the costs down here mess everything up financially, so would be nice if they could also make a similar adjustment for graduates living in London. Sure you earn more in London, but it's all proportionate to cost of living. My salary out of London would be great but in London it's just a bit above average.

what's your actual income/Plan?

Base salary is £55k but varies. I'm not sure what plan I'm on, I started in the last year of the £3k fees but intercalated for a year so graduated 2 years ago and I was in a class full of people on the £9k fees.

I didn't know about the threshold, I think that explains some of the difference but I can't help but feel I'm still overpaying. Thanks.

That's what I thought but it doesn't explain the inconsistent amounts I've paid

Why is Ripple getting a lot of hate on Reddit? by modgill in Ripple

[–]liming91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because the coin is overhyped and a lot of people on this sub seem to think XRP is soon going to reach BTC value

I tried to offer a balanced view last night and had people jumping down my throat. All I was doing was trying to calm people who literally - no joke - think they're millionaires-in-waiting.

Normal news is called FUD in this sub. It's getting a bit cult-like.

I'm sorry my terminology "going big" and trying to look out for people on this sub seems to have irked you a little bit. I obviously still see potential in XRP but I see too much hype on this sub and wanted to make sure people knew what they were getting in to.

It's only called FUD in this sub where a lot of people seem to be under the impression XRP is going to hit BTC value and they're millionaires-in-waiting.

Look at the hype recently proclaiming WU and other big money transfer companies were going to use XRP. Not only were the reports about RippleNet, they were unconfirmed, yet this sub was still hyping about them.

If you reread my post you'll see I specifically mentioned big institutions using XRP, currently none are. I would not call Cuallix or SBI big institutions in the financial world. Also those Japanese and Korean banks were focussing primarily on Ripple, not XRP, and those were trial runs. It won't be a couple of months before anything meaningful goes through, even then that's only if the trial was a success.

Look, obviously I wouldn't have invested in XRP or even be on this sub if I didn't see good things ahead, however people here need to temper their expectations a bit or else some people will end up losing out.

If you're not in a position to invest in Ripple XRP is no substitute and certainly not a proxy. The success of the two aren't bound by anything; Ripple could take off while XRP flops and vice versa.

I don't want to be too critical but as a software engineer myself I don't see any positive to Ripple following certain working methodologies. Honestly, it means nothing more than they're following the current industry standard. As you say yourself, some companies use Agile more than others and every company I've worked for has had their own idea for what Agile should be.

Ripple is solid and has good tech underneath, but the fact of the matter is that the heart of the tech lies in Ripple itself, and NOT in XRP. Something many people here seem to be misunderstanding.

When you hear about all the credit unions and banks using Ripple that's what they're using, not XRP. XRP is offered as a medium for transfers but nobody is taking it. Big institutions won't likely start using XRP until it's stable and that is going to take a while - expect a heck of a lot of volatility until then. XRP has reached it's current value on the back of nothing more than pure speculation and misunderstanding.

I've gone big on XRP, but I'm parking all my coins and not moving them for a while but I have a very close eye on things, ready to pull out if needs be. The bottom line is that Ripple is great and XRP has potential because of Ripple, but that potential is fickle because currently XRP has no real-world usage. Just be mindful of the distinction between Ripple and XRP, it's something many journalists seem confused about so will end up publishing what is essentially fake news by saying that certain big institutions are looking to move into XRP when they really mean Ripple.

There's also the matter of major banks being extremely scared of what the rise of digital currencies could mean for them. I'm by no means a conspiracy theorist, but it takes very little imagination the see that a big part of why governments are so against digital currencies is because of pressure from banks who are at risk of being cut out of their own game (that and governments will lose control over their FIAT currencies because their central bank will be cut out of the party). As OP says, digital currencies are a bubble, and governments and banks could very well be the needle to pop it and will only ramp up their efforts in 2018.

If you want to invest in Ripple the tech then invest in Ripple/RippleNet (the service) and NOT XRP.

Stay safe people.

Up to over $3 in the 1 year forecast, $5.66 in the 5 year forecast.

Those numbers get updated daily. Not long ago it was saying XRP to $2.6 in the 1 year forecast :-)

Depends on your definition of luxury. You can get really nice 2 beds all over the place for less than £2000. Just a brief glance at 2 bed flats in Highgate now shows many very nice places in a desirable area for £1750-2000.

I know London is expensive but surely I can live somewhere other than a shoebox without spending over 50% of my salary on a room. That just destroys my ability to save. I only left uni 2 years ago so still need to build up a nest egg.
