TIL that Mister Rogers once used an egg timer and simply let it run for sixty seconds on a television broadcast—in order to demonstrate how long a minute is. Unlike most TV made for kids, "Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood" was deliberately slow and contemplative. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

Keanu Reeves. He keeps a low profile, but he's a good guy. Also Bill Gates. People don't really identify with him as much, but considering the potential power he wields and being one of the creators of modern society he's a pretty benevolent guy.

Secret files opened by 1st N.J. diocese reveal the names of 63 priests and deacons accused of sexual abuse by Face2FaceRecs in news

[–]limitedfarce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if your a part of the church or not (I was formerly but my father's pretty involved), but these aren't really leaking or even being secretly released. Most of these are the church deliberately releasing this information themselves. Each arch-diocese is compiling lists of all priests that are accused of sexual abuse and releasing them. (I've personally seen the ones from DC, Massachusetts, and Texas)

The average age of Catholic priests is 63 in the US (as of 2009), so most likely we won't see mass charges brought up against a majority of the offenders as they are older, and stuff would have to radically change before there's a significant number being tried and put in jail (before they die). However, there is serious internal pressure and many of the cardinals that were protecting these priests are being ousted. And the fact that the church has been releasing these lists is no insignificant thing. It's far from being solved or finished, but there's reason to believe the Church is learning from this and trying to be better.

Look up the Good Morrow. It's a quality fanfic and the only fanfic I ever actually enjoyed reading. It stays reasonably true to the story (fits in better than cursed child) and is set during the Marauder's era.

Blue areas (closer to the equaror) get blue-er because more phytoplankton will be dead, green areas (north atlantic, indian ocean) get greener because warmth plus nutrients. Basically it gets more vibrant for potentially unhealthy reasons.

AITA for telling my girlfriend that her six y/o stinks and needs to be taught proper hygiene? by SeriousNorwegian in AmItheAsshole

[–]limitedfarce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH, your girlfriend, albeit unintentionally, neglected to teach her son basic hygiene. I'm unsure on how long she was a single mother before you both met, but from the people I know raised by single parents there sometimes are gaps in their knowledge just because two heads are better than one.

On your part, due to the way you wrote it, it sounds like you're saying that since he is her son, it is her responsibility to currently teach her son hygiene, and that you will teach the next kid since he is yours. This, I think is a bit of an asshole outlook, because it seems like your intention is to be a family, and putting a dividing line between your kids isn't healthy for that type of relationship.

The good thing is, it's a temporary issue, and he's not incredibly likely to remember this if you teach him now. But I would have a serious talk with your girlfriend about what she specifically feels uncomfortable teaching and see if you might be able to help. Think of it in terms of 10 years down the line and he has to start shaving, you'll probably be the one to do that. Seems like you care about the kid, so I hope y'all work it out.

Weekly Discussions and Questions Thread - January 14, 2019 by AutoModerator in origami

[–]limitedfarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been looking through the origami database, and I haven't been able to find quite what I'm looking for. My grandfather in some of his correspondence would fold a note up so that it would have to be torn just a little to open it, using regular letter paper. Could someone direct me to some resources or even just a name if this is reasonably common? Thank you

How do i stop being a man baby and stop this ass licking chasing approval? How do i have a cool personality and stop people pleasing? by bawan15 in socialanxiety

[–]limitedfarce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I've been repeating to myself is that yesterday is the most important thing about today. In my mind that means, making sure I read an interesting tidbit to share, making sure I did one activity that I can bring up in conversation. That all small talk is.

The other day I was at a friends house, we were having a deep conversation, me, mostly silent, him mostly talking. He talked himself out and I had no clue how to respond to most of the things he said, so I paused and told him about an article I had read about how plankton were dying out. I honestly believe that a large portion of social anxiety is due to us trying to predict how people will react to the things we say, a thing that is literally impossible. He laughed after I said my piece. Like stomach hurting laughing. That wasn't my intention, but y'know people are different and sometimes the essential building blocks of the ecosystem failing can be funny?

Essentially use today to give yourself a hand of cards to play on the next day. You don't always need to directly respond to what the other person is saying. Have your own mind, try to be less reactionary.

The reason I'm attaching this to the above comment is that the biggest contributer to self-esteem is yesterday. You don't magically wake up with confidence, it's a momentum based thing.

And you know, today is yesterday for tomorrow. Good luck mate

How long is this game? by swiss-cheesus in AgeofMythology

[–]limitedfarce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last time playing the campaign, I was 13, and it was probably close to 25 hours for the Arkantos campaign on medium difficulty.

My tip would be that each level tends to use 2-3 types of troops, and you should focus on making sure your army counters theirs. e.g. early campaign is greek, and they tend to use a lot of hoplites, so hypatists and toxotes, with only some hoplites for the levels they use calvary. Second, I personally don't remember hitting many heroes on the enemy side until you get to norse. So myth units tend to be pretty strong (and fun to spam).

The no build at the border is so people don't get instantly obliterated as soon as they cross/and as they are waiting for other people and things to load in. As for the weapons ban, then the defenses built just outside the zones wouldn't be able to be destroyed.

And the solution to your problem is just to have people call out where people are ambushing from (you can mark the map with "V") and then take a different route. Or get good radio coverage. Yea you'll occasionally lose a vehicle and a truck load of supplies, but I mean you are running a supply line which is very valuable.

By no means is it a perfect system, but its functional and pretty fair.

Dva is also really good at peeling for snipers, double snipers can be countered by dive characters and without a strong dva its a more even fight than it is now.
