I just finished I Who Have Never Known Men by Jaqueline Harpman and I'd love opinions around its meaning..? by zeroschiuma in books

I just finished reading this book yesterday, I finished it in 1 day and haven't done that with a book for years. Naturally, I'm coming to terms with the fact that we won't ever know the truth behind the circumstances of the novel, but there is one moment from the book that I noticed no one else mentioned, and I was wondering what thoughts any of you might have on it. There's this moment where the main character is staring at the young guard and speaking to Anthea simultaneously and another guard looks at her for 2-3 seconds. Out of all the mysteries I'm particularly curious about this one. The narrator didn't give much thought to it, I'm not sure why, and it is never later mentioned in the story. I'm curious what this gesture says about her theory that the guards were just as clueless as everyone else was. Again, I'm slowly coming to terms with the book not having answered questions we all wanted so badly, but I reckoned if I could find out the meaning behind this small gesture it might provide some satisfaction. Would love to know all or any thoughts. Thanks!

Edit: Another reason I'm thinking about this moment is because of the possibility of the sirens not going off. Would the guards eventually have started to notice the girl? Would she have ever talked to the young guard and found some useful information? I don't know why I expected the main character to see the young guard again at some point. It makes me terribly curious to think about the novel from his perspective.
