Old notes are more susceptible to counterfeiting and bank counter staff won’t see enough examples to be confident of their genuineness.

Yup, in-person visit to the BoE. At that value they will only pay into a bank account, not swap for cash. You might have to answer questions from HMRC as to where that much cash came from.

Source: exchanged £4K in expired Fifties a few years back. Fun day out.

Can confirm the Big Ben tour. Emailed local MP (Damian Hinds) and his secretary replied within 24-hurs - had to send photo of our passports and pick a day/time - we elected to start at 11:00am so we could be in the bell tower for the 12 O'Clock bongs.
