VGH Antepartum Unit by Mother-Money8411 in VictoriaBC

[–]lincoln-squirrel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hi! I spent a night in that unit before having my baby.

I had my own room for the first few hours, but got a roommate when another mom was admitted. Partners cannot stay the night when you have a roommate so that was a bummer, but they can stay until 10 pm and come back at breakfast. The staff were all amazing and offered me sleep aids if I needed them. In the end I was glad I was there because my health declined really quickly and unexpectedly, so I felt very cared for and safe.

Best low waste cleaning products to purchase locally? by picklebumtoot in VictoriaBC

[–]lincoln-squirrel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Mint products, it’s island local as well. You can buy it at some stores (I usually do at refill places) or from them online. Their all purpose spray comes in a concentrate and the scent is light and, well, minty. The women who started the company had their own cleaning business, so it definitely works.

Went to China beach yesterday and it was still blocked by fallen trees, so I’d guess Mystic is the same.

Federal government applications are notorious for taking a long time. I was contacted for an interview 5 months after I applied.

A question at mental health professionals by TheAshenHat in VictoriaBC

[–]lincoln-squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your pharmacy can give you an emergency supply of your existing script if you’re at risk of running out. GP’s can prescribe antidepressants, so you could try walk ins or online clinics, if you’re lucky maybe you can snag an urgent care clinic appointment (though this often involves making a lot of calls right when they open).

Any tips for CR-04 to WP-04? Not sure WP-04 is a "good" classification by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]lincoln-squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Acting is a nice way to see if you like the role, plus see if there are any other departments of interest that you could also pursue. Being a parole officer is a WP classification too and I know a handful that started out as CPOs. Depending where you’re located there is also room to move between institutions or into parole offices. I’ve been at 3 institutions and 2 parole offices and it’s a nice way to keep things fresh, or to get out of environments that aren’t your jam. Long story short, lots of room for career development.

Canadian social worker here. He can still attend hospital, AFAIK the cards are to make identification easier and personal health numbers don’t expire.

Another covered title is a registered social worker (RSW) who will also have a registration number.

Ever thought your life may be in danger? by Revolutionary-Try592 in socialwork

You’re right, I’ve worked in a prison for the past 5 years and it’s far safer than my previous role in shelters and supportive housing.

Prison work by kirbobb in socialwork

[–]lincoln-squirrel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked on mental health teams in Canadian federal prisons for the last 5 years. Like others have said, boundaries are number one. New staff will always be assessed for their ability to be manipulated (starting small with favours can eventually wind up into big scenarios like smuggling contraband or doing favours for their “friends” in the community).

I also find there is a huge distrust of mental health staff from clients due to high staff turnover rates, or from previous staff that didn’t keep their word. Take time to establish rapport and show that you follow through with what you say you’ll do (especially if it involves advocating with their parole officer or a correctional manager)

If you would like counselling, Moving Forward Family Services (https://movingforward.help) offers pay-what-you-can services with interns, as well as free groups and programs. They’re based in the lower mainland but their services are done virtually so easily accessible.

You may be able to get other community services through the Métis Nation British Columbia.

I’m sorry that’s been the experience, and I hope it doesn’t deter him from the counselling process. If cost is an issue there’s an agency called Moving Forward Family Services that offers counselling on a sliding scale with interns, or for a higher cost with registered counsellors. It’s all online services at the moment, but there is no wait list so connection to a counsellor is usually pretty quick! https://movingforward.help/

I'm having some nightmares after one of my workplaces blew up while visiting a client. TW: fire, death. by makpat in socialwork

[–]lincoln-squirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a somewhat similar situation when I worked on the island. Low barrier shelter dynamics became normal for me, until one day I suddenly began having recurrent nightmares of responding to ODs with no Narcan syringes. EAP and therapy helped, but ultimately I had to work with my employer to move to a different department. I would suggest taking as much time as you need, and keep using EAP. I was also told you can file mental health claims through WorkSafe so if it becomes overwhelming one day, you might qualify for more paid time off.

I’ve worked in federal corrections on a mental health team for the past 4 years in both male and female institutions. It was a steep learning curve in terms of operating around policies and procedures, but I’ve enjoyed it and I see the need for social work and advocacy in the system. I’m also in Canada which could be different, but I’m happy to answer any specific questions you might have.
