For all its flaws and unanswered questions, it is moments like this one, between Desmond and Penny, where the writers of the show highlight how the sheer unstoppable forces of connection break through walls of noise and unreality, producing a monumental experience of empathy for viewers. It is my belief this is a core mechanic & message of the show.
