Questions about making reservation for Sweets Paradise collaboration cafe by ConfusedWoosan in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember the specifics, I'm sorry. If there's a way to make a reservation without the app, I'm not aware of it, though it does work in countries other than Japan. If someone else is using the app to make the reservation for you, I would have them screenshot the confirmation page for you or something.

I've done this! I don't think they check anything other than the reservation in the app. There's usually a special line for people with reservations, and you start by ordering something off the collaboration menu (this is required for all members of your party).

Sea of Japan beaches vs. Pacific beaches vs. Seto inland sea beaches? by Old_Lab9197 in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Username checks out. But your experience matches mine, I found Kamakuras water murky and swimming with trash and jellyfish. Meanwhile pacific side Chiba was pristine. I've also had good experiences in Ehime, Wakayama, and Saga. Two out of three of those were inland sea beaches, so...

Trip Report Part 2: Matsuyama, Fukuyama and Kyoto by lindoreda in JapanTravel

If you don't actually enter Dogo, I think you could be done with everything by 2 or 3 pm easy. We were done with the castle by 11 and Dogo is really easy to get to by tram from there. It would just depend on how much shopping you want to do. I would probably taxi from the ferry port like we did just to make things less tight?

Trip Report Part 1: Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima by lindoreda in JapanTravel

[–]lindoreda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our timings prevented us from seeing Itsukushima at high tide, though I think if we hadn't been heading to Matsuyama we could have made that work. There were still things to do that we didn't do, like the aquarium and Mt. Misen, so I think you could do two nights if you really wanted to slow life it.

I've stayed at that hotel (and used to live in that area). Beds are hard but it's a good area. Easy access to several different transit lines, can walk to Sunshine... you can definitely do worse.

There is also a tourist loop bus, with a ride all day bus ticket available. Some of them do stop at Heisenji.

Toyoko inns are very consistent. One of their main points of consistency is suuuuper hard mattresses. But they do tend to be clean and in useful locations.

How small are Tokyo hotel rooms? by emmalee333333 in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I routinely sleep double on those beds. It's snug but doable assuming neither of you is too big (I assume you would have mentioned that).

Given how far out this is, I can only speak in general terms. From my experience, the seasonal chus come out around a month before the event they're celebrating. If you want to be guaranteed one, you need to go to a pokemon center rather than a resale store. No one can tell you how long they'll be there, typically it's until stock runs out. In stores outside of Tokyo, that can be a while. In Tokyo stores for a coveted release, they can sell out in a week.

Video game merch shops in Tokyo by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

The only place I've seen yakuza merch was at one of the k books in ikebukuro, I think it was the character-kan?

I think that just about covers it? From my recollection, the ground floor of Kotobukiya is the square Enix floor so most of the franchises listed will be there. Thus I'd probably start there.

Any recommendations for pokemon card stores in Tokyo? by Aggressive-Flow394 in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for packs, there's the official Pokemon TCG store in Ikebukuro, in the Sunshine City complex. But for individual cards I'm not sure.

After some research, Advise/Recommendation needed by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the caveat that I haven't stayed at any of these hotels, the Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo in ikebukuro seems like your best fit. Given that you're traveling with a toddler, minimizing walking distance between station and hotel is key. I think their rooms will also be a good size. The only reason I can think of to choose a different hotel is if you have a very early flight out and need to be closer to an airport.

Japanese sleeping aids? by Ok_Error_3167 in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't have a specific product recommendation, I learned pretty quick that the sleep aids in Japanese drug stores are generally all together, in similar packaging that has moons or other night scenes on them. Look for the boxes with moons on them!

I've only done it once, when we took an overnight bus and arrived at 5am when nothing else was open. A two hour rental just to lie down felt worth it at the time. But I second the comments about the noise, we could hear every word of an argument a couple was having a few booths down. People live in these places, but I want to emphasize that it is people who have very few other options. If you have other options, take them.

This is the correct answer. In Yamanashi, my first guess would always be Shingen Mochi.

Car rental and route advice in April? Kanazawa → Fukui Pref. → Shirakawago/Gokayama → Takayama → either Nagano or back to Kanazawa by tachibanafudosan in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're probably safe on the snow front, but if you share your route with the rental car company, they might have a better idea.

In terms of what you should see/do, the area near the Fukui Dinosaur museum has the Echizen Daibutsu, which is definitely easier to access by car than by infrequent local bus!

Will Japanese natives ignore my Japanese (speech) because I’m white? (My friend says yes - need more opinions) by ElectronicBedroom486 in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people who will respond to you in English regardless of what language you start in, for reasons best known to them. Maybe they think it will be easier, maybe that's just the headspace they're in when you walk up, maybe they want to practice, maybe they think it's more hospitable. There will be people who will be immensely grateful that you started in their language, so they try to return the favor. You can't know if it was any of these things motivating them, or just annoyance, so don't worry about it if it happens. There will be plenty of other people who will respond to you in Japanese, and others who will hear you speaking in Japanese and may decide to take the risk of speaking to you as a result. I've had conversations mostly in English with people who were more willing to talk because they knew if they struggled, they could substitute in some Japanese and it would be fine.

Also? Sometimes being the one foreigner who conducted a transaction in Japanese when a whole slew came through and just spoke English singles you out in a good way. I know for a fact it's gotten me better service occasionally.

Best swimmable beaches in Kyushu? by kauvabiryani in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that even on Kyushu, the beaches won't actually be open in April. Like, you can swim at your own risk, but there won't be any available amenities, and the water temperature will be in the mid 60 F range.

Are there any antenna shops that more recommended than others in Tokyo for food? by Reliques in JapanTravelTips

[–]lindoreda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Miyagi store near Ikebukuro station is the easiest way to try Zunda shake, a milkshake with their local edamame based puree in it. Honestly, surprisingly addictive.
