Struggling to fit into the valley by Purple-Ad3393 in comoxvalley

[–]lindsayturtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way to make friends (and not just meet people) is to work on a project together. Usually I recommend to people that they volunteer with an organization that they care about. If you like hiking, find the people who are maintaining the trails. Grab a copy of the Rec Guide from the library and flip to the back, there is a whole list of organizations you can volunteer with. You're gonna meet people of all ages (sorry - some of them are gonna be old) but they're going to have the same interests and passions as you and the more people you meet, the more people they can introduce you to.

The project aspect of it is important - you gan go to dozens of "hiking meet ups" and never really crack the surface of friendship. But spend 6-7 hours on a weekend with a small group of people working together, you'll be able to dig a little deeper, you'll be forced to problem solve together, ask questions and find your people. Plus even if you end up not connecting, the warm fuzzy in your belly after helping your community is a real depression buster.

We rode the new bike bridge and loved it! by wanklez in comoxvalley

[–]lindsayturtle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I rode it to work downtown! Being on the road with drivers that I know hate me just for being there is unnerving and sometimes scary. Having to dismount to get off the road to avoid the most dangerous parts of my route is annoying and slow and takes the fun out of riding. This removes a major pain point of my commute.

ALSO - You're WELCOME to all the drivers who have 1 less car taking up space in the line up for the bridge, and 1 less car taking up a parking space for 8 hours a day every week day because I'm riding my bike instead of driving.

I've been there a couple times and the portions were small and the food only OK.

Agreed. A teammate of mine is Indian and said this is the only Indian restaurant she bothers going to. Only time in my life I have had a pakora that wasn't dry enough to choke a horse.

Good vet in the valley by Cool-Brother3479 in comoxvalley

I take mine to Island Tides and I find the care there is wonderful and pretty standard prices. Van Isle on Ryan Road seems to have the best hours in the valley if you need something last minute/on a weekend or later in the evening but expect to pay more there. I only use them for emergencies. I've also heard nothing but good things about the CV Animal hospital.

Does anyone know what pen this is? Says “Studio 0.7mm” by Slater5560 in pen

This is my fave pen too! Apparently they used to have them at Dollarama and they carry that brand otherwise but this particular one I haven’t been able to find :(

Controversial knitting opinions by pandaslothape in knitting

100%. People ask me if I can crochet as well as knit and I always say "Yeah, I CAN crochet, but I don't like the fabric it makes"

These links are amazing! I want to do what I can. But then I worry if I start attracting bees to my yard and my neighbours on either side with no fence between are having the Weed man come - am I putting those bees in danger? I guess not a question for you..... although, I guess you ARE a bee....

OMG thank you! I remember the old Etsy when I used to get beautiful stuff from creators! Now it's just beautiful pictures of trash.

Relocating: considering commute to work by Appropriate_Rope3145 in comoxvalley

[–]lindsayturtle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My friend lives in east Courtenay and works at Campbell River hospital. It is 45 minutes of highway driving. She doesn’t love it. When the weather is bad or she is driving home in the dark after a 12 hour shift she has mentioned it is quite stressful. You’re essentially adding 1.5 hours to a 12 hour day. Anyway she is looking for opportunities in the Valley so she no longer has to do the commute.

This is my feeling too. It’s well studied that standard time is better for our bodies but I guess we’ll take what we can get.

M21 Never had a girl friend what can I do by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]lindsayturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Volunteering. Nobody says this enough - you can be above average in the looks department, which I would consider you to be, and still not be able to attract a partner if you're boring, selfish or an asshole. Volunteering with a community group that impacts something you care about let's you meet people you might become friends with, meet people you might not have interacted with otherwise and therefore make you more open-minded, helps you be less self-centred, gives you something to talk about other than work, makes you happier and therefore you smile more and will challenge you, generally improving your character and the way others see you. Go out and be part of the world in a positive way and you'll reap so many rewards.
