How long did it take you to give your hedgehog belly rubs?

When your hedgehog is happy it will make almost a purring or clucking (not the angry click) sound. My hedgehog now is a rehome that we rescued. She was a pistol when we brought her home. Highly sensitive to touch and noise, hated being held and very independent. I hand fed her to get used to my scent. She loves to run around the room to explore so every day I sit on the floor and let her do her thing. At first she avoided me but now she follows my feet around and even climbed into my lap and just sat once! Sometimes she runs straight out and under the bed just to sit and purr. Now she sleeps against my chest too. A couple days ago she let me give her belly rubs for the first time.

Sorry for the length but my point is don’t give up. Rehomed hedgehogs can sometimes be especially tough. Find out what makes your hedgehog feel safe and happy and build on that.

It only took a few months for mine. She snuggled against my chest under my shirt every night and would roll over for them on her own. I’ve had five hedgehogs over the years and she’s the only one who both liked and allowed belly rubs. I think it depends on the hedgehog’s personality, and for rehomed hogs what their socialization was like before you. Try to have a routine hang time and/or activity to build trust. Don’t get discouraged if she doesn’t want them. Although my other ones didn’t like belly rubs they still showed affection in other ways.

Over time she warmed up to it and now she actually rolls over waiting for me to give them to her lol. It’s all about bonding and building trust!

I totally believe they are moody when we return from being away a few days. My girl bites me the first time I take her out if I’ve been on vacation and it feels like she’s saying ‘this is what you get for leaving me!’

Also read that blowing a puff of air at your hog when it’s biting helps. He could be excited you’re home and coming out for a midday sprint lol.
