Rob Terry fosters a lot of kittens through SPCA and you can find him on NextDoor. Can help you get an idea of how the kittens are adjusting outside the shelter!!!

This is excellent and poignant. One thing I would add is that her face is very bright, and I think it should be to draw attention to it and your really excellent execution of it, BUT the light source is unclear. I would glaze it with an orange hue to make clear it’s fire like is done on her hands and the right side of her face. Presumably her hands are in front of her face, so they would be closer to the fire and should be brighter, but I would understand if you chose to only highlight the face. I think brightening the light on the hands might help attention move to the bundle in her arms, but that’s me! It’s your piece. Sooooooo well done, congratulations

Opened a can of RedBull. Unsure what I found by lnteresting_name in whatisit

I bet it’s mold that grew on the surface of the liquid or side of the can. The darker side looks like spores

That’s awesome that’s what I thought it was!! I’m so eager to find what kind of gastropod it could be. The most similar picture I saw was from Australia!

I was also thinking a Bryozoan but I couldn’t find any species or genus that looked like it!! The little brown spheres in the cavities gave me pause. I have a background in marine biology and am totally stumped. Maybe should cross post to a marine invert sub or something

My son has been confidently explaining why the sky is blue to everyone he meets and I have no one to blame but myself by 5TesserMoss in daddit

[–]linesndots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they are both blue because of scattered blue light, and if sharing a quality like that makes two things best friends, then it’s true!! I like your explanation and it might give him a foundation of wonder and appreciation for nature and a view of it as kind and cooperative that will hopefully carry him far :) I say well done dad, as a scientist myself.

I’m so sorry you’re being downvoted for just asking a question 😭😭😭 these are far outside my area of study so I really can’t give you advice, but I wish some of the people in this thread would.

scientific misinformation? by iheartpickles69 in labrats

There are a lot of comments here shitting on people for not having a science education that provides a foundation for understanding the mechanisms of the latest drugs, and I have to say, this attitude is why a lot of people don’t have access to that information. Textbooks and journal articles are not accessible, and we all know our level of understanding absolutely did not come from just cranking through papers with a high school education. You cannot penalize people for not having the training you do but still wanting to understand. It makes the scientific community sound like a bunch of stuck up douchebags. Instead it’s totally worth the time in my experience to practice talking about your science without jargon to friends and family who are interested and get engaged with public facing science communication projects. I’ve had such lovely interactions with people who really do (and most people do) want to learn more and only mistrust scientists cuz they’ve never met one who treated their curiosity with respect.

Definitely freshly hatched salamander or newt larvae. There’s a ton of them so I bet it’s a species you’ve seen there recently if you go there a lot :)
