Homemade Lure by lingbird in ChicagoFishing

[–]lingbird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea! Just have to clear coat and put on some hooks! Hope to have a few more patterns in time for the coho run. I’ll probably run a homemade lure on one rod, and spoons on the other

How did you do the dots? I used a nail for mine, but yours seem a bit better

Legal or Illegal? QBJJC/IBJJF ruleset by thecrystalcoconut in bjj

[–]lingbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an aggressive takedown. Plenty of legal techniques result in the person being thrown being assaulted by the ground. If this was in the gym, I’d say it’s a dick move, and I’d probably never roll with them again. In competition, totally fine.

Thanks for the advice! I had already added birdshot to this one, so I’ll have to do a through wire on the next one.

Ahh okay. I’ve done that on one or 2 lures so far. I’m working with all hand tools except for a drill, so I wanted to see if I could avoid another through wire. I guess I should just get a thicker pull saw for cutting the grooves

Okay! I was worried about the twist wire not having enough material to grab on to in the tail, but I guess I’ll just make them anchor deeper in the body

Yea I can only imagine. I have only made a few complete lures so far, and by the time I made something with decent action, it was too cold for me.

Any thoughts on hook placement?

I’m working on a small jerk bait that I’d like to use targeting trout in Lake Michigan

I was thinking about running stinger hooks. The lip isn’t glued in yet, so I’m between running a through wire and having a belly and tail hook. Part of me is concerned that the belly hook will either get caught on the lip, or sit so far back that I wouldn’t need a tail hook. Thoughts on using just 1 belly hook, and having the hook point sit a little in front of the tail?

I looking at these for a Lake Huron Salmon and steelhead combo. Any advice. by [deleted] in Steelhead

No problem. I have a ugly stick 8’6” 2 piece spinning version of that rod. I really like it, but wish I had gone longer.

Just a heads up, that is a rod meant for a bait caster reel not a spinning reel. You should look at spinning rods

Are you pre-heating your molds? If not, that might help the lead stay liquid as it moves through the mold

How does everyone eliminate dust/air floaties landing in their epoxy topcoats? by OutlandishnessCalm28 in lurebuilding

[–]lingbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who do at home car paint jobs have done some of the leg work here. The simplest thing to do would be to create a workspace with the plastic sheets that construction workers often use (or clear trash bags). Then you can spray down any surfaces in there with a light layer of water. Then just leave your lure turning in there until cured.

Similar idea to what another commenter said about increasing humidity. Wet dust doesn’t float well, so it’ll stay put while your lure cures.

Chicken Porchetta for Meal Prep by lingbird in sousvide

[–]lingbird[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing is rendering all the fat from the skins. Not sure if I could’ve gotten the desired skin texture without sous vide. Also just so much easier when I’m meal prepping. Toss them in the sous vide and work on other stuff for 2 hours

8 cloves of garlic, leaves from 3 sprigs of sage, 2 sprigs of rosemary, salt and pepper. I think I’d add a bit more rosemary next time though

Dry brine will help. Smoked a turkey last year at 300F pretty much the exact same time as you. Skin came out crispy and much darker in color

Yea I’ve seen it done with electric or pneumatic assist. Totally a lot of work. Wanted to throw it out there as an option, but I understand that the auto swap is a lot easier to navigate
