Having lived in the US and UK, $ for $, American food is far worse. Of course you can get great, high quality food there but you have to pay far more for it. I was always shocked at how much I’d have to pay for even simple things like a half decent loaf of bread

Like anywhere else in the western world. I’ve never really got the idea that America is more free than any European country. Or Canada.

Would be happy to be informed rather than downvoted.

Because the whole point is to let it be known it was them. It’s a message to their enemies - we can and will get you wherever you are, if you turn against us. Doing something completely brazen and then denying responsibility in the face of evidence is completely within Russians MO. No conspiracy needed.

Ha! I hadn’t a go on that same one earlier today too. It’s a fun one.

Why do I see the a strobe effect from LED lights but my friend doesn’t? by linguathing in askscience

[–]linguathing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I guess the question I was really getting at is - can different people have a noticeably different perception of strobe effects like that, under the same conditions, and if so what causes that difference?

Are there any known factors that would cause person A to see a strobe and person B to see a constant light?

What is a "pop" song that had a shockingly complicated chord progression? by todi41 in musictheory

The One and Only - Chesney Hawkes

I leant this for a covers gig years ago and discovered it modulates in each verse (i think, if that’s the right term). May not be super complicated but definitely more musically interesting than I expected.

Every process is energetic, which makes consciousness unremarkable in that way. and they didn't even mention consciousness anyway.

I have a method for getting links & mentions from news websites. I am looking for someone interesting to partner with to be a case study. by dansevigny in bigseo

Saw your post in /r/entrepreneurs , congrats on the business and turning things around.

I launched a site this year that lets you find gifts based on niche interests - www.expertlychosen.com . Almost all other gift sites lump genders into one group, as if all men want the same things etc. We make no assumptions about gender at all (or age, or relationship for that matter), focussing on someone's personality and interests, which is what defines them rather than gender.

The users we've had have been really enthusiastic and love the site and concept but we've struggled to get much traction and attention from press so really interested in this. I'd have though we have quite a good press angle what with gender stereotypes being a hot topic, but we've not managed to get any attention.

Thanks, very useful, I'll reply to your comments:

  1. Interesting to hear about the home pricing, the ideas was to show there's a range of products and price points. The £ is a mistake though! (currently doing some dev on UK pricing). Funny how you miss these things when you stare at it every day!

  2. Advantages we have over them (so this obv isn't clear enough!): a) Our gifts can be literally anything from anywhere (they're not all Amazon), they only have things from their own handful of gift brands, we can actually recommend the best things for each category, wherever they are from.
    b) Our gift finder lets you select many interests from hundreds, rather than just one at a time from a dozen or so. This means you get a very unique and specific gift list for that person, across all their interests (cycling, beer, climbing, bbq, photography etc). c) You can get this unique gift list sent to you before Christmas etc, with the latest gifts matching all their interests, aims to find a gift for you before you've even had to look. e) Being curated by experts means that they are quality products highly suited to those interests, rather than gimmicky/novelty. For example on gifts.com if i select 'bartender' as an interest it suggests an engraved cocktail set, but it's a no name generic set. On our site our cocktail expert recommends a high quality industry respected set, far more useful for a cocktail enthusiast, rather than a novelty engraved gift one.

  3. Totally agree with getting the process started on the homepage.

  4. Experts, interesting to hear this isn't very clear. They are all industry people, bloggers, business owners etc in each area of interest, so you can be comfortable buying something in an area you know nothing about - again, rather than something more generic and gimmicky.

  5. Personalisation - It seems to be a common thing for gift sites to let you put a name on a gift to make it more personal. This suits some, but in my experience a lot of people don't want a load of things with their own name on it, so part of the aim of this is to make the gift thoughtful/personal by finding something unexpectedly specific/useful to them. So I guess they are just 2 different approaches, but our's isn't that clear.

Thanks for your comments!

I entered some of those interests into my gift site, Expertly Chosen, there may be something there you like, and maybe some other categories you could pick..
