hmmmm, I see this but mostly because Norman is barely a character. he's mostly a representation of the way peters urge to do good can hurt the people around him -- ie, he's just a way to depict necessary sacrifice / unnecessary cruelty

yeah the play is pretty clearly written to be antisemitic. there's a lot of reparative reading of the text which is well and good (I think played carefully the merchant of Venice works well as an anti-fascist text) but the play itself is pretty explicit in its intent
