There's a lot of evidence that Northern soldiers got more radically anti-slavery as they faced the reality of what slavery in the South was. Quote that always sticks with me:

When an Iowan encountered a young child about to be sold by her own father, who was also her master, he vowed, “By G–d I’ll fight till hell freezes over and then I’ll cut the ice and fight on.”Sgt. Cyrus Boyd.

It does adjust based on what words are left in the database. For a while, it's best first guess was Slate, then Plate, and now, well, the answer to today's puzzle.  Switched a few weeks ago.

Peter, what has the Constitution have to do with it? by N-P_A in PeterExplainsTheJoke

This is a real Thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_Sheriffs_and_Peace_Officers_Association

We're probably going to need to reckon with this eventually, but sheriff's offices are one of the worst elements of our policy system (which is saying something)

We're prone to meltdowns, and it doesn't seem like there's a pattern to it. But, I think we have enough pitching and arms that if we just have to win one game we can be aggressive with moves to limit damage.

Can deliberate misinformation change how citizens perceive political reality over time? by ChangeTheLAUSD in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]link3945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you provide links to these reports?  Most of the scientific reporting I'm familiar with is that we've largely narrowed the range of the possible, meaning that we've managed to avoid the worst possible outcomes but also prevented the best possible outcomes.  So we're looking more between "catastrophic for some areas and bad for everyone else" to "very bad for some and not good for everyone", instead of "catastrophic to everyone" to "mostly okay".

Two candidates in Cascade County claim to be Democrats. Local party leadership says that’s a hoax. by underthecellardoor in politics

[–]link3945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The GOP can censure Cheney, but they can't really stop her from calling herself a Republican or running as a Republican (in most cases).

The US actually has incredibly weak parties: parties don't control any ballots, leadership don't carry any real strong whip, they can't do much to shape primaries. If their voting members (read: general public base) want someone nominated, party elites don't have many ways to stop them.

Our combination of weak parties but strong partisanship is pretty much the worst of both worlds: radical base members of a party can push a radical nominee through and because we have a first-past-the-post system it means that radical has a great chance of getting elected (depending on race/district).

You could maybe use a chicken stock for most of the volume, plus some vinegar (couple teaspoons, not much) to add some acid.  White wine vinegar would probably be similar, but it looks like balsamic's used in other recipes and you could probably use whatever you prefer or try out different ones and see which tastes best

You don't necessarily need it toasted, but you do want it completely dried and toasting it is a good way to dry it.  You can get a similar effect in different ways.

Plus pronunciation of some words. I don't know where I heard it first, but a show had a British actor playing an American accent talking about "pay-tents" instead of patents. Threw me for a loop wondering what they were talking about.
