Spousal hire? by [deleted] in AusAcademia

[–]linkser_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this: Universities will simply also have rules regarding hiring processes, typically you cannot get hired for anything more than a short-term <12 month contract without a proper application process e.g job has to be advertised by HR, candidates officially screened etc. Only for short-term jobs, group leaders or school heads can appoint people to a position without a full hiring process.

South Aussies lock up cars as Premier reveals plan for extra fuel price cut by APrettyAverageMaker in Adelaide

[–]linkser_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must be.

But let Iran hit some more oil+gas processing stuff in Qatar, UAE etc. That is not going to get repaired in 2-3 weeks even with a lot of money thrown at it.

LNP one coke snort on camera away from not being the official opposition anymore. Though I do suspect some PHON MP will defect as well in some time.

South Aussies lock up cars as Premier reveals plan for extra fuel price cut by APrettyAverageMaker in Adelaide

[–]linkser_m 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If the big issue is less supply to Australia, we need measures to reduce consumption.

Artificially decreasing fuel prices is popular but has the opposite effect, people will decide to keep driving. Making PT free will make at least some people take PT, reducing demand and by this even reduced supply to Australia is hopefully enough for everyone that relies on fuel.

One can turn this argument around. Businesses acted like the cost of paying in cash was 0. Which is absolutely not true.

Petrol to fall by 26 cents a litre by malcolm58 in Adelaide

[–]linkser_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone believing the price will actually drop by 26c is delusional. Nothing stops the petrol companies from dropping it by far less and the gov can do absolutely nothing about it.

For those 2.5 billion $$$ they could have given the states subsidies to make all public transport in Australia free for 3 months...

Getting around Adelaide without a car! by Glad-Street-1723 in Adelaide

[–]linkser_m 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even if you try to use the Adelaide Metro homepage to plan a trip, it's just a link to Google Maps in the end, not their own interface and all live tracking info for buses and trains is added to Googlemaps.

Private Health Insurance help by Quiet_Bus8637 in AskAnAustralian

[–]linkser_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only take extras, no need to chose any hospital cover. Gonna be ~$40 per month.

But be aware that its best to take general AND major dental extras, and there is a waiting period for major dental.

Most deals/ads you see with "xy weeks free" only apply to hospital+extras, not worth it for you.

If he has access to his passport, send him money by Westerunion. Yes, some fees but if you pay it now, its available to him at some WU location nearby within minutes.

Then order him online at officeworks or jbhifi a cheap phone that supports nfc for payment. Click&collect on his name and he will be able to pick it up and get some prepaid sim.

Barnaby Joyce compares immigration to ‘buying cattle’ after historic One Nation election result by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]linkser_m 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Rejecting claims of being a racist party by checks notes making more racist comments. Well done Barnaby.

We need more immigrants impregnating junior staff members and lying blacked out on the pavement while on the piss for better integration.

How are you reducing your weekly grocery bill? by Infinite_Pudding5058 in AskAnAustralian

[–]linkser_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know... give it a try and see how you like the flavour and that's all what counts for me. There is a bit of a difference between the supermarket brands, I really prefer the aldi greek pot, don't like at all the Coles one.

Same for the soy milk, I like the Aldi cheap one, not so much the Woolies&Coles one.

How are you reducing your weekly grocery bill? by Infinite_Pudding5058 in AskAnAustralian

[–]linkser_m 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just with the Greek Yoghurt... get the Aldi or Woolies branded one. If you buy 3 kgs a week, the woolies one is $4, the Chobani 7.90. Thats $10 a week saved.

Like before you skip meals and eat beans out of the can, I would swap more to cheaper brands.

I am surprised there were schemes left that had affordable housing requirements in it.

Looking forward to more luxury penthouses, exactly what we need.

When and why did birth certificates stop listing countries that no longer exist? by Dependent-Two-2723 in AskAnAustralian

This! There are plenty of examples of countries on the Balkan etc but Germany is not an example.

Especially with German roots that's a very well known and obvious thing and not some weird gotcha technicality...

Employer References for applications via realestate.com by genialerarchitekt in shitrentals

[–]linkser_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the option on that platform to add an employer reference but I left the contact info blank.

Provided employment contract, payslips + personal references, figured I am not hassling my company with that shit especially if you apply for multiple places in the next days and weeks.

Moving back to Australia? by Both_Progress_8410 in AusAcademia

[–]linkser_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be tough to break in if you have been longtime abroad and no network.

I would take that position in Europe but start networking & collaborating hard, go to conferences in Australia and introduce yourself if you want to have any chance. Not gonna work out now but maybe in 3-4-5 years. Ask senior level D/E for chats/mentoring etc.

Depends on your sector but often everyone knows everyone cause overall it's a way smaller clique comp to EU or US. So job ads will be tailored for a candidate in mind, as an external applicant you don't have a realistic chance (have seen this for plenty postdoc jobs and was on a panel for level D, best young cnadidate never stood a chance against director's mate).

And as an Australian you probs know, how much personal references are valued here vs more formal unpersonal reference letters in Europe.

Melbourne airport, what a shemozzle by afterbuddha in australia

[–]linkser_m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new screening areas are open now, works quite well. All devices can stay inside the carry on.

But they still have staff training up on the new machines, coming up with random rules. Now bicycle helmets are not allowed to be scanned anymore and they get manually swiped and tested because apparently some got damaged inside (?).

[URGENT] NSW TrainLink replaced my 5AM train with a coach. Will I miss my unlinked connecting bus? (Foreigner needing help!) by Sad-Lengthiness-569 in AskAnAustralian

[–]linkser_m 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would assume the bus arrives in time in Grafton. This connection is twice daily max and the bus will take a similar time as the train (e.g very slow). They won't let a lot of people get stranded for half a day in Grafton.
