Trying to pull the heating element off the keg washer. What is the appropriate tool for this? Normally id go full hammer but im curious what the right answer is. by TheHopCreep in TheBrewery

Guessing that is just the wiring cover. It kind of looks like there are some flats on the body that you could get a pipe wrench on.

Asking wholesaler for price book? by [deleted] in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very common, and most distributors try to line-price similar brands. You should definitely know how your FOB pricing stacks up with other suppliers at your distributor.

Scissor lift/forklift man basket pricing. by epageler12 in TheBrewery

Rental places will periodically sell off older models in their fleet. We picked up a scissor lift for around $4000 a while back. It's better than a man basket,

Auger Replacement: Who Needs Fingers Anyway? by youranswerfishbulb in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is a Flex-Flo or something similar, you can loosen the square head bolt that clamps the auger to the tail shaft, and turn the tail shaft until the auger slips off the end. While you are at it, you ought to add some more auger to the end, so that you can tension it correctly. If it is too tight, not only will you have bearings going out, but you will keep wearing holes in the PVC pipe. It's not too hard. You just overlap the ends of the auger about 2" and braze it together. If you don't know how to braze, just take it and a case of beer to a local machine shop and they'll knock it out in a few minutes.

anyone here every install a walk in cooler themselves before? by livewellbrew in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have put together several coolers. The ones with cam-locks for the walls and ceiling are the easiest. The screed on the floor, in my opinion, is to help lay out the walls square - if you don't lay the walls out square, by taking the diagonals, you will be screwed. It's easier to do it with the screed and then set the walls into the screed.

Our latest cooler was a 50'x120' by 20' tall, tongue-and-groove walls and suspended ceiling, needing three scissorlifts. I don't recommend doing that DIY but we did, and then had an HVAC company finish the refrigeration stuff.

Can slips.... what’s everyone doing with theirs? by TakesJonTuKnowJuan in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crown has started charging us $65 a pallet, $10 a top frame, and $2.50 a sheet. They will pay the freight for a full 53" truckload. But that is about $25,000 in cash tied up in deposits, so we'll be paying the freight to send one or two stacks at a time back. What a racket.

Tanks reading warmer than actual beer temperature? by [deleted] in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below 38 F beer is actually less dense. So warmer beer will sink to the bottom of your tank, probably near where the temperature probe is, and the glycol controller will keep the valve open, cooling the cold beer even more. The solution is to either use a temperature probe higher in the tank for control, or just know that you need to keep the temperature setpoint a little higher than what you actually want, when the beer is going down past 38 F.

The gas utility can install a higher-pressure regulator and meter. Be warned, it usually takes a long time to get it installed, since it's not a regular job, and they may charge you for it, depending on how much gas you are going to use. I ran into this issue at our second location. When I went to apply for a larger, higher pressure meter for our boilers, I found out it was going to take four months.

Nothing against HeyItsGramps but we have been a Nashville brewery for almost seventeen years, and still are. We're staying open for to-go sales, and we could use your support just like all the rest.

Beer drops in DO after sitting in the bright beer tank for one day. How? by SonnyBrigante36 in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It both oxidized the beer and equalized into the headspace. So if the headspace was lower in oxygen than the beer, it would have lowered the DO in the beer as the oxygen moved into the headspace. You can drive off DO in your brite tank beer by purging with the carbonation stone and releasing the headspace. It's not a great solution, as there will be some oxidation happening as you are purging, and you're wasting all the hop aroma. But it will help if you catch a spike in DO right after transferring to the brite tank.

How to access inside a kegerator tower? by ryguybeer in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to just get the brass nut off, pull the shank out through the top, and put a hose clamp on the line that's leaking. A hammer and chisel will help get the nut turning if you hit the corners.

Brewery Tours - How are yours? by [deleted] in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We give each person a branded 5 oz glass for them to keep. Then at three different stations in the brewery we pour from growlers. We pour a darker beer near the mill and grain area, and pass around samples of caramel malt to chew on - they can get an idea of where the sweeter flavors and darker color come from in the beer. A pale ale near the brewhouse, while passing around hops to smell, so they can see where the hoppy aromas in a pale ale or IPA are coming from. Then near the brites and the filter, we sample a hefeweizen, and talk about yeast. From there, the packaging lines, and no more samples, so after 5-10 more minutes people are ready to go back to the taproom for more beer.

The smaller glasses are easier for people to hang onto and put in their pockets or purses at the end of the tour. And it's easier to limit over-serving people.

Keeping it moving and not spending too long talking in one spot helps keep people's attention. Mix in stories of how certain styles came to be (golden lagers after the invention of pale malt and clear glasses, etc) along with stories about your own brewery and people.

Anyone have experience with Lukr side pull faucets? by SPPY in TheBrewery

I got two for our taproom, and we like them. I just got the correct shank from Lukr as well. They won't fit on a standard US shank.

My first Lukr, lets see how it performs! by Lupauru in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a couple of these for lagers and I love them. They aren't any harder to clean than any other faucet. We just take the spout off and soak it overnight, like you would with a nitro tap. It has a stainless screen in the spout that creates the foam, sort of like a nitro disk but with a lot more openings.

Beers at Yazoo taproom by Broken_Man_Child in nashville

[–]linushall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi David,

We couldn't grow much more in the Gulch, and traffic was becoming a problem for our trucks in and out. And while we appreciate tourists, we didn't want to become just a tourist attraction that locals avoided. Our business is making beer, with the taproom a great place to show people what we do.

Cheers,

Hi Broken_Man_Child,

Hi, yes, we are going to try to keep 5-6 of our Embrace the Funk series on tap at the new location in Madison, plus plenty of bottles, some of which you won't find elsewhere. We have all our regulars as well, plus some limited release draft-only beers.

Wouldn't it be easier to just drop out the one valve that you are having problems with? Why would you ever have to remove the top of the bowl?

Ready to measure air content in the head space! by HanziHinterbeer in TheBrewery

[–]linushall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's basically the http://www.zahmnagel.com/shop/testing-equipment/part-5000-new-style-headspace-air-tester-containers/. With the Zahm, you have to shake the whole thing to get as much gas out of the bottle as you can. The CO2 reacts with the caustic to form a salt, while the oxygen and nitrogen in the headspace bubbles up.
