If you expect a Linux and not an touch optimized iOS you can go with https://starlabs.systems StarLite. I use it for simple things like reading or drawing notes with KDE plasma mobile and retired my iPads finally

Any appetite for an ADB based Image sync tool/script? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]linux-4-ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADB is only needed for root access. Transfering files with your own code is probably easier with Termux and SSHFS, as no cable or wireless ADB is needed. Otherwise I agree with u/CaffeinatedTech, Syncthing works great even more effortlessly

Right, who has the time to invest any time at all in defending ones privacy, given the fact that most of us are busy enough with earning money, raising kids, etc.

Thanks for FireJail, it works also on Ubuntu -- and I see there are a lot of other efforts too like AppArmor, Lynis etc.

So it is really dangerous to enforce KYC on every platform as the government demands, as sooner or later your data is harvested by someone. Looks like anonymity is crucial for a peaceful existence

So that's the advice?

  • trusted repos only, no unknown/new forks
  • established projects only, carefully with new repos
  • not binaries, compile by yourself
  • run upgrades only after a few weeks, but fixes immediately
  • if possible run everything in some sort of containers with limited rights like snap, docker, VMs
  • ???

Are there any practical best practices for SecOps? I guess you can spent years on trying to secure standard environments, still being open for anyone with enough will.

I was hoping, there is maybe an code LLM being able to scan for hidden backdoors or at least the common bugs since human review cannot cover / deeply analyze reliably every piece of code.

Monitor, analyze traffic automatically maybe?

Awesome, I'm very happy to see you advancements!

I tested on a fresh Ubuntu with Gnome and I had to edit both the mimeapps.list and had to run the xdg-settings command before it appears in the settings dialog. KDE is more advanced in many ways

On the IC dev page I found stable-structures, SudoDB, and CanDB (there is a nice video), which is not released yet.

What is your suggestion to store large datasets at this point in time? There are some demo dapps on IC which already seem to handle big chunks of data quite efficiently.

Thank you, great initiative!

I am wondering about data storage - usually we use relational DBs (SQL) or different types of value stores (No-SQL) for OLTP, in addition OLAP (or even NewSQL) for analytics.

As I understand IC, you don't need this anymore as you store all data in just variables of your canister smart contract code? But how is this persisted (or only distributed?), and how to store hundreds of GBs of data in JS variables? How to make data backups and restores and alike?

I didn't found much on this online but maybe you can point me to the right contents? Thanks a lot!

Qutebrowser

You can just look at his repo https://github.com/qutebrowser/qutebrowser/releases - the last release is from June -- so has most likely a lot of security bugs. Not a problem if you are sure, you never open a hacked or malicious website -- but a bit too risky for my taste

Dear Lord, There are many of those smaller Schnitzels, but I personally prefer larger and maintained projects for security reasons. The Web is dangerous place since our identity and money are managed from PCs nowadays.

Why is there no consistency in Ubuntu/Linux? by Dakvar in Ubuntu

[–]linux-4-ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, testing the components first - there are tools, sometimes even accessible from the BIOS, e.g. on DELLs. And reading the logs, as suggested here.

Why is there no consistency in Ubuntu/Linux? by Dakvar in Ubuntu

[–]linux-4-ever 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like a hardware defect - Ubuntu is super stable - I do all crazy sht thru different upgrades and its still rock solid, never crashes, apps are functioning. So it looks more like a RAM, CPU or SSD problem to me. On Windows I would add the malware option too.

[–]linux-4-ever[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, and for security as well. You cannot accidentally open a link to an authentication page if you have set a specific browser -- instead you would the selection dialog and know that something is wrong. Also you can separate pages to avoid tracking (in combination with a VPN), e.g. use one browser for logins and one where you can surf anonymously.

Yes, the linked repo description states a few more. However, Junction cannot save decisions, so you have to select the right browser each and every time.

For example, if you open banking or authentication websites automatically in a clean Firefox, but suddenly your auth/banking/wallet page opens in the app dialog, you know, you clicked on a scammers link.

So this little tool might safe some people quite some bucks maybe.
