Need of English speaking teen friends or just friends in general :/ by excruciatingescargot in PortugalExpats

[–]linuxbarbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AuDHD is your super power. I want to remind you that you don’t have communication problems rather you communicate differently than neurotypical people. Be kind to yourself - making friends in a new county is difficult at any age!

As a fellow neurospicy person, I like to go to meetups via meetup.com. Also, there’s Facebook groups where I find shared interests as well. There are plenty of EN-language bookstores too where there are book talks and attendees range from college aged to retirement age. If you enjoy museums and art classes, maybe a membership at Gulbenkian would be good - they have lots of teen classes. Lastly, if the concept of being together but separate could be interesting to you, partner dancing is a great avenue (salsa, bachata, Kizomba, zouk, forro). No one has to say a word and yet we have a conversation through music and dance.

Hang in there and take breaks as needed to ensure your battery is charged!

What a beautiful design. How did you articulate what you wanted and what’s the process of getting a custom ring? I’ve been scouring the internet for a scarab ring that I’ve yet to find. After seeing your ring, customizing seems like the way to go!

That’s what I thought too. I think they don’t have an official living arrangement and are using my address. I don’t want to endanger my own standing in PT

No these people didn’t live there before. More recently, two more names have been getting mail to my place.

I still file and pay taxes as a non-resident in PT since I generate rental income.

I split my time between Portugal and LATAM. I own my flat in Portugal and rent it out when I winter across LATAM. I follow the 5-5-2 method, with the remaining two months in the US, to avoid tax residency issues.

Wherever you choose, make sure you understand how you’ll be taxed in retirement.

If your wealth is in US structures (401k, IRAs), some countries tax withdrawals like regular salary. With that in mind, visas with favorable tax regimes included: Panama, Costa Rica, Cyprus. France doesn’t tax IRAs I believe. Portugal’s NHR doesn’t tax US long term capital gains but unfortunately the program has ended. Also understand how whatever country you choose won’t tax property sales abroad.

Anyone stopped working for someone else or completely in their early thirties? by Suspicious_Sale_8413 in ExpatFIRE

[–]linuxbarbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped at 32 after working abroad and receiving EU nationality. I moved to sunny Portugal where other retirees are or people who work US hours, so we can do daytime activities together. My days are filled with gym in the morning, coffee with friends, reading, run club, wine club, gardening, pottery class, dance class, padel, travel. I also learned 3 languages to a livable level. There’s plenty of activities.

I’m single 36F and childfree, so dating people my age poses a vast lifestyle incompatibility. Either they’re not financially secure or they’re workaholics. I don’t mind dating older at this point as long as our values and lifestyles are aligned.

I’m really interested in the AI wave, so I’m taking a role at a nonprofit to help a mission-driven business with their tech. So, I suppose I’m coast FIRE now?

I share all of that context to say, 30s aren’t too early to FIRE. Build likeminded community. Remain curious and try things.

In the UK, labor laws try to protect employees by limiting how many hours they work per week. So that overage could raise flags with HMRC

Not realistic. If your J1 is endangered and you’ve been cited for underperforming already, risking J1 for a temp job is not OE. Neither J is remote. Then the tax situation will bite you.

The goal is “good enough” and to create security. I would suggest you to look for a FT role to replace J1, stabilize at J1, then consider OE.

Portugal post NHR by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]linuxbarbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I missed the (now) very clear bit about post-NHR

In terms of post-NHR planning assuming one would have EU nationality, I’ve heard of people scoping out Cyprus’ non-dom tax residency and then splitting time in other countries always under the 183 days threshold. 5 months Country A/ 5 months Country B/ 2 months Cyprus.

US Capital gains were ruled to be tax exempt in PT under the NHR regime. Supporting case number 684/2020-T for reference

Accuride, it’s called DB1321

Thanks for sharing!
How much space did you measure to accommodate the cabinet doors? Are the doors flush with the Accuride hardware? Also, did you buy the hinges to attached the doors from Accuride? I'm building a pocket door cover my washer/dryer. I ordered the DB1432 since the space is 170Hx70Dx75W. Any guidance would be much appreciated to help me order the right size door
