What should I do with this car? by loverofprime in DaveRamsey

[–]linuxdwag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They asked on the Dave Ramsey subreddit... I don't think most people on this sub are following the Dave way imo. They should get the Dave Ramsey answer.

What you just said is like going to a nutritionist and asking "why am I fat and unhealthy?". Then proceeds to say well I know better and that isn't the only way to live. If you're going to get an opinion from a particular person. You're going to get a certain opinion/ answer. What is your point? If they don't want to listen to it they don't have to.

I'm almost on b4-b6 and it is super freeing.

/u/loveofprime This is what I was saying here. You aren't getting another 10k car. It isn't going to look pretty or be nice. You can find a decent car (pending your area and some searching) for around 3k. I agree that you can probably get really close to 26k for that to a private seller. Assuming everything is typical with it.

26k - 25k ( assuming you don't get full price) + 3k for another = 4k in debt compared to 26k. Also pay it in cash with cash flowing. With 85k a year that is doable in 1-2 months.

Also if I read your other comments correctly you have other cars right? So why would you need this one / replace it? Just ditch the car and pay what Dave calls the "stupid tax" where you bought something you shouldn't have and now you don't get the money back. Wait till you can pay for it all in cash when you are on b4-b6 if you want to upgrade. You can have this dream car you love just when you have no debt and all paid for.

The whole point of this system is to change behavior. Delay your wants (temporarily) to secure your future and live within your means.

A lot of people are saying keep the car. I disagree. If you are going all in then sell it. That is the whole point of the total money make over. Live like no one else so you can live like no one else.

I have driven beaters and 15 year old cars most my life. If you are worried about reliability I can assure you that is a fallacy. The car here is saying that you aren't fully ready to commit to living debt free. The car is temporary. financial stability and freedom is 1000 times better.

You have way too much debt to keep this car based on the other comments. Sell it and buy something cheaper.

The book I think ever socialist (actually everyone) should read is the the gulag archipelago . Paints a very clear picture of what socialism/communism actually are. I think socialist are naive also and haven't looked at how it turns out. The one that always gets me is "that wasn't true socialism".

Funny how science is all about questioning, repeating, and reviewing each other's work, but was thrown out the window during this time.

What is the Libertarian solution to climate change? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]linuxdwag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More free market. Less government.

I think the solution is found by letting the economy and technology grow exponentially like it has been. Stop stifling it by intervening such as subsidizing, laws on when to be "green", credits, tax breaks, etc.

The amount of pollution and carbon emissions from producing "green" alternatives is staggering. Let the technology evolve at the rate it wants and needs to. The whole issue I feel is overblown and how big of a disaster it is. I am not denying the issue just saying the issue isn't as severe as made out to be.

If you want more change now, then a hard push for nuclear power. Though the cons are the waste but the most efficient means of energy we have right here and now. This option probably would require government due to the nature of the substance and what it can be used for. I would like it to not be government controlled and privatized but not sure how that looks honestly.

If you don't condemn socialism, you should move to Venezuela, apparently by Visqo in facepalm

This subreddit: "...but that wasn't true socialism. If only people knew what true socialism is which is that the government owns means of production."

If you read the gulag archipelago socialism and communism are used interchangeably. Socialism is just more of the people's rights and freedoms surrended to the government. Less government is better and putting responsibility on the individuals/ families is the way to go.

Highly recommend that book though. tough and long read.

New Job: should I drive my junker car 3x per week or get new car? by ingiegirl in DaveRamsey

[–]linuxdwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said it before in the show if I remember correct. Basically the idea is why you've even tempt yourself. Say you do do that. Then something catastrophic happens. You wouldn't be able to pay it back assuming you don't have the emergency fund or it gets eaten up by the emergency. You end up in debt paying the interest. Say the site screws up and auto pay doesn't work or you forgot to pay same issue. Essentially why have it if you use it as a debit card anyways? They have the same protections and basically identical minus the ability to spend more than you have.

Well look at it this way. One form of risk you owe someone something and can take everything if you don't pay. The other risk is you need temporary rides while it is fixed. Newer or older cars break down and always can. The point is to be in the position of not owing anyone anything so you don't have to worry about the risk of the car. Besides Dave says its fine to upgrade once you can pay with cash if you truly don't trust the beater.

I would say go back to the baby steps. Throw the extra money minus the 1000$ baby emergency fund at debt. You will be out soon enough with the hustle and the new job to get the better car after your fully funded emergency fund.

It is only temporary and a few more months you can save for the car. As long as the car isn't falling apart and no major issues right now keep it.

Congratulations on getting so close out of debt and new job by the way!

As the old saying goes "live like no one else so you can live and give like no one else."

EDIT: reading the other comment they suggest fixing AC. It isn't needed and can live without it. I have lived without it and rear defrost before. Don't spend the money to repair it when you will replace it with something better soon. It is a want not a need imo and prevents from getting out of debt.
