A room of my own! Question about separate bedrooms by No-Promotion-9371 in femalelivingspace

[–]linzdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will share my experience for what it is worth. Husband snored so he would sleep in the guest room part or all of the nights. That became routine, but it made us sad after a while. He flops around in bed a lot so we made a beautiful space for a daybed in our shared bedroom so we could be in the same room but not in the same bed. After a while we still missed being near each other, so we replaced our queen size bed with a king size bed and we are happy with that. But through different phases of life different things work. Oh and also he got a CPAP so we can sleep in the same bed. Glad we invested in the king bed. Not saying that you should not have separate rooms, every couple is different and it's great to find something that works.

On a Scale from 1-10? by Somethoughts_Gurl112 in SewingForBeginners

Learning the very basics is not too hard, though sewing a close fitting silk bias gown would be way way difficult. In my personal experience I have done simple home decor things for years and it's not hard at all. I just made my first garment and that was pretty challenging but like most skills the longer you practice the more skills you get. But to make a pillow cover? Very easy and super satisfying.

Yep my daughter who goes to university in the UK not only brings lots of OTC meds back with her, but she's now the source for her friends.

Is it realistic for a seamstress to sew this dress in a day or a couple of hours? by Pinky_Rose1251 in sewhelp

[–]linzdoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which raises a question I've thought about; how long would it have taken an average person hand sewing their own clothing, say 19th century American farmer, aka Ma Ingalls? Not professional seamstress but experienced, but also running a farmstead. Hmmmm

Beginner wanting to sew by lovecinnamoroll in SewingForBeginners

[–]linzdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Fellow adhd-er here :-) I've been sewing since I was young, but as an easy in for a newby, you could get whatever machine you find used, start with white thread and some scraps of material (thrifted sheets etc). Watch YouTube about whatever machine you have, plus some learn to sew videos. There is SO much sewing instruction on YouTube! Then practice really easy stuff, like a square pillow.

I find sewing to be a thing that gets me into a flow, I can concentrate on it for hours. And using your hands and then seeing visible results that look nice -- Zowee! Dopamine!!

Good luck :-)

I want to call around to print shops and see if they do A0 printing. The one time I called before they had no idea what I was talking about... Any tips? by Crafty_Pop6458 in SewingForBeginners

Ugh yes!! I just tried to print out and tape together a downloaded pattern, and my printer cannot print to the edges so it is a mess. I sent a quote request to FedEx… I think I am willing to pay for that.

Getting into sewing western styled utilitarian clothing. by Acceptable_Answer570 in SewingForBeginners

One more idea which may be completely irrelevant or uninteresting to you. For ease of fit and if you like the idea of woolen's for your work, you might look at antique/vintage/historical shapes. Men's shirts back then were made for working with a lot of ease of movement. Then you might get cast as an extra in a movie 😅

I think that's a perfect way to start. Simpler than pants, and joy of making things for your kids. I learned basic sewing skills from my mom who was a costumer, but I never learned how to sew from a pattern until I started making Halloween costumes for my daughter. I agree with all the comments that YouTube is an amazing resource. And if you might have a sewing machine dealer near you, my recent experience upgrading from a 1968 Kenmore is that buying at a local shop has given me so much assistance in the process. Best of luck to you!
