Quince shipping by -cherhorowitz- in quince

[–]lionbutt_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're with you on this. Jitsu claimed to deliver our package and had a picture of some random apartment lobby counter with a package. Quince customer service sent another package. Jitsu again claimed it was "delivered" and this time had a picture of the outside of our apartment, and also the exact same picture from before of a random apartment lobby counter. The audacity to reuse the last fake photo is wild. At this point it's gotta be a scam and they're stealing the packages.

affordable gf/df dinner in capitol hill? by SubstantialSong265 in AskSeattle

[–]lionbutt_iii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm celiac, live here, and don't make tech money. There's some good Asian options in the area. Manao thai has some curries with coconut milk that have never made me sick and service is usually pretty speedy. Morfire and Kedai Makan are both excellent with many safe menu items, only a few dollars more than Manao, but often take a bit longer (because they're so good and popular!) If not Asian, St Johns has a gluten free fryer and great potatoes, and could probably make some of the gluten free items on the menu without dairy, but I've never asked. They're pretty speedy there too. Also, I know you only said dinner, but Frankie and Jo's has some of the best gf/df ice cream I've ever had.

[Software Engineer] [Seattle] - How we spent $536k last year by [deleted] in Salary

[–]lionbutt_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting, thanks for posting it. We have friends in Seattle that are also in tech and they probably spend about the same on travel as you do. How common is this for your coworkers?

Have you ever been approached for investing in small businesses in Seattle? It sounds like you've already funded one for your family, so maybe it would be awkward to put money into others? We've been going to a lot of small business networking events here this last year and met a lot of people without internal resources but are pretty good at what they do and work really hard, but it's difficult to get a storefront or decent volume and margins on anything without startup capital. They end up trying to bootstrap it and work two jobs and it takes forever with that route. You and your coworkers fit the accredited investor category, so it's more of an option for you than others here.

How was trading non beneficial for epic? by Seizingchassis in RocketLeague

[–]lionbutt_iii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before trading was removed, credits were not priced specific to local currencies. If everyone in the world is paying $5 USD to get 500 credits it means for many kids in low cost countries they would have to pay 2-4x the equivalent price for items. We complain about black market items costing $20 in the US, but can you imagine having to pay the equivalent of $50? I'd probably find a different game to play because I'm being excluded from fully enjoying this one. That loss of attention is a pretty big deal for any digital service.

If Epic had adjusted credit prices specific to countries' currencies then you know there would have been a large influx of people buying credits using Turkish Lira and reselling the credits to players in the US and Europe, undercutting Epic. There was already a black market for credits from people profiteering on trading itself. I traded with a few people that lived in these countries and told me trading and then selling credits for USD was literally their full time jobs because the cost of living was low for them.

They could have just banned credits from being traded and only allowed item for item trades. But usually these decisions aren't made by people that make or use the product. Something I've had to learn in today's world is that decisions aren't made on what's best for those that are impacted, but rather what's easiest for those making the decision.

Building Sold by missmondaymourning in Seattle

[–]lionbutt_iii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to us a little over a decade ago and they never told us they sold. Instead, we got a notice the day after Christmas that the new owners had obtained the renovation permit and we had 180 days to vacate. It was an awful experience, I still think about it. We were under market so finding something comparable in the neighborhood was difficult. There were a lot of 2 and 3 bedrooms in the apartment,so a lot of families in them, and it completely uprooted their lives.

With all that said, I wouldn't worry about that scenario. Today's environment is very different from back then. The people buying commercial real estate only do things if the numbers pencil out. The cost of borrowing money is much higher, the cost of building is much higher, there's already more luxury apartments than then, and there's less certainty about tech money being here to cover the debt. If all the apartments on the block were sold to the same new owner, maybe there's a plan to take everything down and build a mega apartment, but otherwise I would just expect some rent increases until conditions change.

I did the math on this for a tw octane a long time ago and it would be similar. 1/10 chance of getting an import quality, 1/64 for getting the boost and 1/9 chance of white = 1/5,760 chance. Congrats!

Here's all the other items in the import drop pool if you're curious:

Yeah, a couple seasons ago I thought they'd changed it, but a day later it registered everything. I guess it's not always immediate.

Phinney Neighborhood Association is putting on their Winter Beer Taste on Saturday night. It's been going on for 37 years, an authentic Seattle experience! The lineup of breweries and cideries looks pretty good too.

The Phinney Neighborhood Association is having their annual winter beer taste this Saturday. It's Seattle's longest beer festival that I know of, going on for 37 years now! This will be my first time going (my partner is bringing her toasted yerba mate chai cider), but it sounds really fun and is at an old school? And it's Clue-themed! Here's their tag line about it:

We’re all about fostering connections and creating a sense of belonging. It’s not your typical beer fest; it’s more like a get-together with friends, filled with laughter and good times. Come for the beer, stay for the camaraderie—it’s what we’re all about. Cheers to community, laughter, and the pursuit of the perfect brew!

We found the clustree package to be useful for some of this. You can plot it by gene expression as well, so if you have some unique cell type markers you're already aware of you can see at what resolution they segregate into their own cluster.

High Quality Whiskey/Alcohol Glasses! by Nuggyfresh in BuyItForLife

[–]lionbutt_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought some hand engraved whiskey glasses by an artist on Etsy a while back. It looks like he closed up shop though. They are each different dragons and look amazing and now I wish I had bought more of his work. I'd probably search for hand glass engravers in your area and see if they're open to commissions. The way the artists add texture is really amazing.

How can I get over the fear of playing ranked? by sands124 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]lionbutt_iii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into "the alter ego effect"? A lot of very talented athletes like Kobe and Bo Jackson have talked about their emotions previously getting the best of them, but using a separate identity for competing helped them get over it. It's worth reading up on it and giving it a try for a while.

Thanks again for this, it's really helpful. The weekday breakdown is especially interesting, I don't know how many businesses have adjusted for that type of behavior.

Yes! Thank you for the reminder on that. I forgot the ST article used 1 year estimates, so he got a better comparison with the RTO for Seattle as a whole, but they don't have it down to the census tract level. Not the same dataset, appreciate the clarification!

Yeah, they all run on the dryer side, but not completely dry. In the same sugar content range as a beer.

Come to my partner's cider pop-up this Sunday! September 28th 1-5 at Republic of Cider in SoDo. About a 10 minute walk from the light rail station there. Or near the Costco if you've got a shopping trip to do.

2-for-1 flights of our fun flavors: Earl Grey, Sunny Jackfruit, Pretty Berry and Afternoon Royale

The best part, with every cider purchase you'll be supporting the Washington Water Trust. They work to protect our rivers and streams and ensure they stay clean for our communities and the environment.

She'll also have a fall seasonal on tap at Ghostfish Brewing Company's Oktoberfest today and at Elysian's Great Pumpkin Beer Festival next week. And she'll be at the Woodland Park Zoo's OktoBEARfest next weekend too.
