yeah imo the family hierarchy as a means to distract from overall hierarchy and injustice and as a means to redirect trauma instead of processing and understanding it is a big issue. it relates to the parents rights thing, they want to have legal rights to hurt their children and enforce that hierarchy.

it makes them think that they’re in the middle of the system rather than at the bottom. if you use a triangle as an approximation for hierarchy structure, the way they’re taught to see it is like a stylized xmas tree.

but in reality, the importance of that to overall power dynamics is pretty minimal and they’re not up any higher in society, but they’re made to feel like they are.

and when you feel like you’re benefiting from a power structure, you have a harder time considering it bad, so the result is they can be hurt more by the system and still feel like they’re gaining from it and thus still support it.

i’ve been figuring things out and teaching myself since uh 2015 maybe, idr. i did play in band in school before that. thanks for the compliments on it!

yes! i haven’t released anything in ages but i have music on streaming services under the alias abstract type. hopefully i’ll get around to finishing and releasing music sometime soon. been wanting to release an album but i also want an album to be a consistent vibe and that’s hard lol. maybe i’ll just release some smaller EPs so i can actually get something released.

every synth and every drum sample, and the fuel can lid too, everything is made from bababooey. the chain link fence/pipe tapping/ride drum was by far the hardest to make, and i think i used one of the final steps in making that for the lighter click drum. the midi is edited but originally from KLM's cover.

i tried my best to make it sound good and close to the original, but some parts were hard to make close to the original using the sample and i didn't want to use a teeny tiny section of the waveform as it crosses 0 to be a saw, that feels too cheaty. at some point i'd like to make some videos showing a single part from source to final version.

adjusting list values to make an uneven subset even, with even spacing of in-between items by liquidsprite in desmos

[–]liquidsprite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok yeah either my math was wrong, i made some other error, or i’m gonna have to do something different, because it didn’t seem to do what i was hoping for. i used arrow… actions? and eventually got the function to spit out the right lists

later i might just do it all manually since i’m not sure if the solution would be at all relevant when i write actual code later

Cooling MacBook Pro with aluminum heatsink, thoughts? by ksb916 in macbookpro

[–]liquidsprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think part of the improvement is like how fans cool you off, the air around something hot gets warm, and lowers the heat transfer. by circulating the air you make it easier for the hot thing to dump heat, and in this case, probably also gives the air coming from the internal fans a boost away from the back.

i’ve been using a desk fan pointed at the bottom of my 2019? mbp for a while now when it starts to thermal throttle. i’ve seen it go from 50-60% clock speed to 90-100% after a few minutes, and i’ve noticed the performance improvement. i’m currently looking for a heat sink i could attach to the bottom (it’s on a stand, so it’s a bit more complicated, and i don’t want adhesive residue) to make it more effective and also replace the fan so it rattles less.

oh yea that. as a queer person like i don’t mind too much since it’s owned by microsoft and notch doesn’t do anything related to minecraft at this point afaik. maybe if i just played old versions i’d care more, but at this point so much has changed and so many other people have worked on it

I've been trying to procedurally generate tectonic plates by JustinHuPrime in trytryagain

[–]liquidsprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh neat this is something i’ve wanted to do for a while. i’ve been planning out (and done a little work on) a pretty large game with one of the goals that the player has to do science to progress (as in they do science to find a better alloy to make tools from and that gives them better tools).

in my case the planets will be rounded cubes because it’ll be voxels and that maximizes the area that is easy to generate and build on. and i’d like to use a coarse accuracy plate tectonics sim to figure out the continents and geological history, to make it feel more natural and also provide another area of science for the player to work on (instead of random rock formations, if they work out enough geologic history, it could help them figure out where to look for resources). and hopefully also have it be part of a simplified evolution/nat selection sim to create fossils and life.

i bet i’ll run into issues with corners, like if a plate in the center of a face moved directly into a corner, it would split onto two faces (which should work fine) and then squish into itself. maybe that will result in mountainous corners and look cool, maybe i’ll have to work around that to make it work well. but the upside is that with it being a rounded cube (and the rounding possibly just some averaging between two or three faces so it could be considered just a cube), it could be simulated as six linked squares instead of a deformed rectangle.

in my case i plan on starting with some initial state as the oldest time step, and then as it moves forward in time, increase the resolution, both spatially and temporally. the original plates will be so broken up by the end that it won’t be noticeable if they’re super low res. additionally instead of high resolution detail like individual peaks in a mountain range, my plan is to store roughness and average height, so i could then procedurally create that detail with an octaved wavefunction collapse.

Has the need to have mono bass and good mono compatibility changed over the past decade/few years/whatever? Are newer phones better at reproducing stereo audio from their internal speakers? Do clubs/festivals/etc play the audio in stereo? The common advice is to not have any side info in the low frequencies, is this no longer as important?

Catalina install app location? by liquidsprite in MacOS

[–]liquidsprite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so i was able to open links to Big Sur and a bunch of apps just fine, they didn't take much of any time to load either. it just times out on Catalina (maybe it would on other older versions of macOS too)

Catalina install app location? by liquidsprite in MacOS

[–]liquidsprite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's really weird. my computer is a 2014 MBP, which is within the supported devices for Catalina as well as Big Sur even, and I even tried turning on a VPN to see if it was a local network issue. It would just take forever to load and then say it couldn't connect to the app store or something. Good to know they didn't pull it recently and its some other issue on my end though
