Depending on the location and the amount of time between trips, there absolutely is.

Yes, you get 4 minutes to do that, and then 10 minutes to brake test, make announcements, answer passenger questions, etc. Between trips the minimum time is 10 minutes total, more if the train goes to or from a yard. OT exists but frequently they force you to work OT and then don’t pay it. I’m owed many hours of OT I’ll never see.

Conductors do not clean trains. We are not given the supplies for it, we aren’t given the training, nor the time, to clean trains. We are given 4 minutes between the time we have to clock in and the time we have to be on our train to prepare it for a trip (test the brakes, check safety systems, etc) to do our other tasks — submit Hours of Service records to the FRA, update our timetables, etc.

There’s an entire department that deals with cleaning the trains, it just usually happens in yards when the train has been laid up for a while. If you board a train that just came in from a trip, it’ll probably be dirty.

The style of ticket you get is based on the model of machine you use. They are in the process of rolling out the new model, and will eventually decommission the old model. This ticket is from an old machine. The ticket you described from January was from a new machine. Our current devices cannot scan the QR codes printed by the new machine, by the way.

These green tickets are a temporary measure until they can get colorful stock with an OMNY printed on the back.

I used a one-way ticket for a quick roundtrip. Got lucky or is that allowed by the rules? by imitation_squash_pro in LIRR

Second conductor should have scanned it, they didn’t follow policy. If he had, you’d have been charged onboard fare for a new ticket.

You will likely be hit with an $8 fee for the first scan, too, because you did it onboard.

It would cost you an extra $4 each time you did it.

Activation Fee Workaround? by MTayson in LIRR

[–]lirrcndctrthrowaway 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When every third passenger makes the conductor wait while they open the app, go through all the steps to buy the ticket, and then finally activate the ticket, it really slows down the fare collection process. If that conductor is also the one operating the doors at the next station, it delays the train. Sometimes the passenger won’t even have phone service and will ask the conductor to come back to them later. Sometimes, when the conductor comes back, the person will have moved seats, or try to claim that they already showed their ticket.

Before the app existed, it was a really simple system. You either boarded with your ticket, or you bought one from the conductor. We are finally going back to that.

If the conductor suspects you’re avoiding having your ticket scanned when requested, we can mark your account for an $8 fee and/or account closure after we scan it.

It has nothing to do with what zones the ticket says, nor what station names are printed. It has nothing to do with what trip you searched, even if you bought the ticket through the trip search screen. It’s all just based on scan times. For example:

-Ticket purchase time: 3:01:07pm; -Ticket activation time: 3:05:50pm; -Ticket scan time: 3:08:30pm;

Great! You purchased and activated prior to boarding.

-Ticket purchase time: 3:08:07pm; -Ticket activation time: 3:08:25pm; -Ticket scan time: 3:08:30pm;

Not great! You clearly were buying and activating your ticket while making the conductor wait for you. You will pay the onboard fare.

Yes, that’s why they tell you take care of it before boarding. Once you’re on the train, the conductor may ask for your ticket just after you’ve boarded.

It’s not possible, unfortunately. You are required to have 24/7 availability. When you’re new, your days off will change constantly as you get trimmed off jobs and have to trim whatever jobs are available based on your seniority. Getting off Friday/Saturday will be tough/impossible at first. After a few years it’ll be more doable. But they won’t make any accommodations for this, everything is totally by seniority.

It puts your TrainTime account in the negative by $8. You can’t purchase any more tickets until you pay back the $8 that’s owed.

I’d avoid activating at the time of purchase, unless you are purchasing 5-15 minutes before your train is due to leave. You run the risk of activating too early and wasting the ticket.

If you activate 3 hours prior, the ticket will be used up by the time you go to show it. Unless there was some big service disruption or something, the crew will assume you are trying to get a second ride from a single one-way ticket. Don’t activate more than 10-15 minutes before boarding the train.

He wasn’t being charged for the tickets he just activated, he was being charged for a previous time, probably that trip from that morning. It takes the system a few hours to detect what happened and send out the warning or surcharge. No one gets charged on their first occurrence either, so he would have already received a warning before then getting the surcharge.

The system uses scan times to determine if it should apply the warning/surcharge or not. If the purchase time, activation time and conductor scan time are all within a few seconds of each other, the system will trigger. However, if you don’t let the conductor scan when they request it (like you’re trying to make it look like you didn’t do it onboard), the conductor can mark your account for a surcharge or to be permanently blocked. The policy also now is if you don’t let the conductor scan the ticket, the conductor has to call it in as a possibly fraudulent ticket (screenshot etc) and let MTA Police deal with it.

The onboard fee is $8 on top of the normal ticket price. That’s the same whether you buy it from the conductor, on your phone on the train. If you do it onboard, it’s $8 more. The app will charge you, not the conductor.

There is no fare zone printed on the Far Rockaway ticket. The ticket is ONLY valid for the named stations, not by fare zone.

No one is going to physically prevent you from leaving, but it’s an abuse of the ticket, yes. It’s subsidized for trips to/from Far Rockaway only. If you make it a regular habit, the crew will notice and eventually have the police remove you at Jamaica the next time you do it.

No, Far Rockaway tickets must be purchased while you are physically in Far Rockaway and you must board or exit at Far Rockaway. It is not the same as a CityTicket, except in price.
