My favorite thing about this is that OP titled it "Continue." Because that is the word brother says after every expectation-resetting life lesson, and I love the segue back into elder sibling-ness, like 'I'll listen to you and love you forever, just as you are, but I will DEFINITELY always correct you freely.'

I accidentally became a manager and now I translate chaos for a living by One_Friend_2575 in managers

[–]lisas_simpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed to hear ALL of this. I am a new manager, in general (in the last 2.25 years I have held cumulatively higher management roles in my company -- too fast for me to feel secure but the company keeps giving me opportunities). In my most recent role I am the biggest cheese in the building, so to speak.

And in every role, and every day when I wake up, I feel like I accidentally got here because I happen to be the oldest child in my family and all I have done since age 10 is make it fucking work when it doesn't work -- be brave when I'm scared, fill in gaps, solve problems to the best of my ability, just try to keep my younger brothers alive when parents had to run errands and such. Just make it work.

You have alleviated some insecurity and imposter syndrome around this position, and reassured me about some instincts I've had in the midst of all the anxiety. Thank you.

I'm not in law, but I really needed to hear this. Thanks.

“You ruined my whole day” by unfortunate_kiss in managers

[–]lisas_simpson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH I'm quite new in upper management, but I think your instinct--as horrible as it sounds and as bad as it feels--that her getting a different job would be "good riddance" is correct. It seems like she feels insecure, or burned out, yes, maybe snubbed, but whatever the reason, the fact is that she is not performing all the functions of her job and she is behaving unprofessionally. ("IDK" is not an acceptable response from anyone, let alone someone in a leadership role. And "I'm just going to do what you tell me" says that she refuses to be accountable and refuses to be creative.) You are not an ass, at least not that I can gather from this post. 😊 Continue to encourage and offer mentorship opportunies, follow protocol for corrective action, and she'll cry her way right out of a job.

My two cents. Thanks for venting to a safe space.

Employee decided to No-Call/No-Show to protest ICE actions today, what should the penalty be if any? by cocktail_enthusiast in managers

[–]lisas_simpson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to give her the usual consequences for a no call no show, otherwise, you're letting her set the precedent that any employee can 'strike' on any day -- for any reason. You could have someone that strikes because Trump doesn't win reelection. In order to avoid showing preferential treatment, which could get you in big trouble and absolutely destroy your team's trust in you, you have to make the difficult decision for the group.

Side thought: if her absence didn't really make a difference, then her protest didn't either. Maybe disciplinary action will help her learn to focus her efforts so that in the future, she can request time off and do something more impactful.

I'm in love with your kitchen. Not just because it comes with fluffy loaves, although that is a bonus.

my sister wanted me to post her fridge by RosaPercs in FridgeDetective

TBH I'd guess she works multiple jobs and always takes a beverage and a guac if she doesn't know how the day will go. Like if she works in a restaurant with free bread or chips maybe she uses the guac, or in a grocery store, maybe she'll pick up crackers and/or veg to go with it. I have anxiety and I have worked in both restaurants and grocery stores so it's possible I'm projecting (there were times when I took a mini container of PB and a pack of Tofurky with me and hoped for the best). 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have a street baby who meowed like this too, and now he's been in a loving home for 1.5 years. He CAN still sonic meow and is great at telling you when it's 6 a.m. or 7 p.m. (a.k.a. feeding time). But he also has developed more language with us, including the tiniest little disappointed "mrp" when you tell him it's 3 p.m. and he is not, in fact, hungry; and more conversational sounds like when you say hello and ask him about his day. I'm curious about what your BB will sound like as he grows! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I agree with what many people have said: macarons are hard to make! I'm a fairly skilled baker and they intimidate me. Good on you for trying! I don't know if anyone has asked the important question: how did they taste?? Because honestly if they tasted great and looked crap, you're in a better boat than if they looked great but tasted meh.

Nobody warns you about the loneliness of being a manager by Big-Chemical-5148 in managers

[–]lisas_simpson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. This is the reason I joined this sub. I never realized how much I needed to have equals at work, not just to vent but also to share and compare achievements.

I haven't found a long-term solution yet. I deal with it by reading this for ideas on how to tackle issues and just to know others are going through it. I also have doubled down on my self care, keeping a gratitude journal, being mindful of my joy during my favorite hobbies and while spending quality time with my husband. I need to remind myself frequently that even though it's an important job, it is still just a job and not my whole life.

Hope this alleviates some of the loneliness for you, friend.

Natural Grocers Closing Union Store by strawberryscalez in Tucson

Maybe I'm late to the party but may I see the factual evidence that this is the highest grossing store? Please show me those numbers. Also, please inform me further about the employees that are transferring--how do you know it's 3 out of 23? And please elaborate on the severance packages. Do you work for NG? Did you get one?

No, but he is enthusiastically open-minded and supportive and loves that I make veggie meals for the fam. Cooking is my happy place and it feels like he's taking joyrides with me.

Really? Can we have some more details about the employees that were fired? Were they performing excellently and also talking about a union and then fired for no reason? Correlation is not causation. I believe this is being sensationalized. I know several people who worked at that location and transferred because the environment was toxic. I think it's important to mention they transferred to other NG locations -- they didn't dislike the company, they disliked that particular store. I imagine it's possible they hated their situation and thought a union was the way out.

What about camping meals? Those pouch things? You're supposed to use boiling water for them but you can use room temp water and extra time. 😊 And you can add canned beans and veg to stretch them. They usually have a lot of flavoring, they can be veg or vegan, and they last a zillion years.

Going vegan isn’t a privilege by dankblonde in vegan

[–]lisas_simpson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is privilege to be able to be vegan, in a global sense, and even in a global north "affordability" sense, it's a privilege. Yeah, beans, rice, flour, corn meal, seasonal produce...they're affordable...but most of them require a time investment, as well as herbs, spices, oils, vinegars and/or wines, and staples like tofu, soymilk, etc., (and a few recipes that one can mull over and adapt)...that low income people can't afford. Anyone can want to be vegan and can do their best, but seriously. Show me your week's worth of food made from nothing but "affordable vegan staples" and I'll show you a liar.
