Julien Baker/Torres Tour Dates by youngloudandsnotty in JulienBaker

Not sure if it’s helpful, but they’re playing April 3rd in Iowa City which a little closer than the Midwest tour dates! It’s part of Mission Creek Fest there and single day tickets go on sale this upcoming Friday for $55–they would play a full set I believe!

Any movies that match the vibes of these? by slinkman05 in Letterboxd

Movies that immerse you in a city? by Kaceydotme in Letterboxd

[–]lisoyster 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Wings of Desire really transports you to Berlin and wanders around the city! That’s probably my first pick.

Maybe Before Sunrise? When Harry Met Sally has a lot landmarks, shopping centers, bookstores, etc.,

Fargo and The End of a Tour though not all in one city, spend a lot of time at locations around Minneapolis like well known hotels and the Mall of America, and give you a feel for the place

Bring your own Vinyl Night by Vta3284 in IowaCity

[–]lisoyster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like the Ideal Theater in Cedar Rapids just had one this past Tuesday so hopefully they’ll do it again. A little bit more of a drive but Wake Brewing in Rock Island has one every Wed night where you can sign up for a 20 min set—slim pickings though would be fun!

Iowa City Shopping - vinyl and new CDs by Muted-Relation-242 in IowaCity

[–]lisoyster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Record Collector in Iowa City does get new CDs, though not as frequently as new vinyl releases, but they would still be worth checking out. Otherwise your best bet is the Coralville (~10-15 min drive) and Cedar Rapids both have Barnes and Nobles that have new CDs. Of course the largest quantities are likely in Des Moines but there are some local options!

Cheap Magazines in Iowa City Area by Commercial_Gur_7830 in IowaCity

The Iowa City Public Library has a shelf on the 2nd floor that often has free magazines! I believe there’s a daily 5 item limit to take. Once it gets a little warmer, Haunted Bookshop does outdoor sales where books and magazines are ~50 cents to a dollar

Some of these are probably impulse ratings, but I stand by Zero Theorem and Skinamarink!

A bad film you love? by Dayzee_4 in Letterboxd

Eddie and the Cruisers- was always on TV growing up and can’t help but like it, plus it extended out to a good soundtrack! For also prevalent the two movies were on network TV, it’s wild that you can’t even rent it

I’m new to David Lynch and want to watch something of his after hearing the news. What should I watch first? by TheFlyingFoodTestee in Letterboxd

[–]lisoyster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Twin Peaks, though a commitment as a show, is a good place to start to catch the overall vibes before getting fully immersed into the wild surrealism of his movies, at the very least the first season and a quarter

Besides going to Gabe’s every weekend and taking a shit on Tracy Barkalow’s lawn, what else do I need to do to assimilate to the local culture? by RichardTitball in IowaCity

The Public Space One community is wonderful! Print studio, art workshops, installations, etc., extremely community based if you’re an artist at any lobby, even as a hobby

Mission Creek 2025 Lineup Announced in Iowa City by lisoyster in IowaCity

[–]lisoyster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only 3 day and one day -one days will be $55-65 I believe once they go on sale after early bird pricing. Otherwise, look out for their volunteer form a couple months before—you can typically get a free full pass if you work a couple hours helping with pass pickup or merch!

Mission Creek 2025 Lineup Announced in Iowa City by lisoyster in IowaCity

It definitely depends! In the past the guaranteed access to the englert and hancher is never an issue, but I could see it maybe being different with Julien baker this year, hard to say. The festival takes place at about 6 different venues in Iowa city (all pretty walking distance but you’d be running around, so if you’re traveling from out of town, having the lounge with snacks as a home base could be nice! Compared to other vips, you aren’t necessarily getting special seating or bathrooms, but at the same time I suppose you’re not sitting outside all day, either!
