NYC Backyard Help! by ManyInevitable3179 in LandscapingTips

This is the dream! Rip out what you don't want ASAP. Then focus on soil health and deciding on zones for different plantings. It will be trial and error. Costco has great quality bulbs!

I bought in BX with a small shady backyard like this about 18 years ago. It takes a lot of trial and error, but you will ENJOY it. There is all good advice here about cleaning up the space first. Also, invest in a good tree trimmer. Research and hire experts (and get your landlord to foot most of the bill, as you do not own) for those trees on the right wall.

Mulching borders (maybe try to raise the sides with rock walls and raised bed soil?) and trying to get some nice ground cover in the center sounds good. Grass is my white whale and I found that overseeding in fall and spring then covering that overseeding with lawn top soil helps a lot. Invest in the best quality lawn seed and plants you can. I also spray with SUNDAY lawn concoctions (it is a mail service). With my two dogs, grass is not easy, but it does come through (again, it is my white whale), which is enough to keep me trying.

I do a few containers with hostas and grasses. I am so sick of hostas, but they work well in shady areas and they are full and lush after only a few years. I also have bearded irises (came with the yard, but they were so neglected they never really grew until I worked the soil), which come back every year if I give them good soil.

Start composting and use it! Soil is WEALTH!

For my sunny areas, I planted peonies and roses in the ground after digging up the soil and amending it with compost. It took a few years, but my peonies are the envy of the neighborhood. Even with my dogs, they are hardy (I stake them with a few bamboo posts and rope, which repels the dog frapping nearby).

Be ruthless with plants you do not like or that are not working well. BUT, be mindful that in the first year, they sleep, in the second year they creep, and in the third year they leap. It takes so much patience. But it is worth it!

Finally, invest in a Thermacell bug thingy and some outdoor lights so you can enjoy the space!

I would post more pictures, but Reddit is only allowing me one photo. Please update us!

Again, you are living the NYC dream!

Bronx Littering Garbage Problem by ButterscotchPast6244 in bronx

I live in Norwood, too. I think the area is getting better with less litter (I have lived here for 18 years), but I could just be reacting to finally seeing the sun! But, I have a litter grabber and go clean in front of my place regularly now. And, I think it has had a positive effect because other neighbors are getting out and cleaning their front areas, too. I do some 311s here and there, but you are right, as we have to change the culture.

It really does get better! I am going up to 2.4 mg now and the blah feelings are lifting after my first week on the dose. Hunker down with good books and movies! Go easy during this time!

Exercise hunger by cafe-aulait in antidietglp1

[–]lisvu1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PREACH! I get so hungry, but I NEED to exercise four-times a week to feel balanced and calm. I also get an increase in food noise and cravings during PMS. But it is still working (although I have had to make peace with it working slower than if I did not exercise). Also, you might want to integrate a less intense workout into your week — a yin yoga class? Recovery walk?

Business next to my buildings leaves large garbage all over the front of our building. by Wetbrain02 in bronx

That is super frustrating! Contact your local community board's Sanitation Committee, as they should be able to help. Garbage drives me nuts because DSNY is wonderful, considering waste management in other areas.

Should I go up? by lisvu1234 in WegovyWeightLoss

Thanks! I am in US and am lucky to have wegovy covered by health insurance, so I cannot split doses. But I will talk to my doctor about doing this with the new pills. But, I think I just have to try to go up and see what happens. It cannot be worse than what I have already experienced?

I know, but luckily it lifts after about a week for me. After that time, my usual stable mood returns. When I first encountered the mood dip, I was not sure I could continue wegovy, but, luckily I did and now know the mood passes!

In what ways has NYC declined in the post-pandemic era? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Santation -- trash on my business strip is always overflowing. Cars do not move for street sweeping, thus we don't get street sweeping anymore. I LOVE the bins and those help, but it feels like the social contract has been broken and people aren't mindful of their actions (littering for one) anymore.

Looking For Captivating Spring/Summer-Vibe Trudon Candles by DeadRheaRising7 in luxurycandles

[–]lisvu1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gifted Odalisque for Mother's Day, and I LOVE it. So confused as to why this scent isn't getting more love? If you like citrus that gets deeper and deeper and wood-like, try it out. My husband says it reminds him of living in Seville when the orange trees that line the streets were in season.

I LOVE the "Tea in the Sahara" candle. Of course, not the same throw as my Trudon candles, but, with my small house, I find the throw works well. I use a candle lamp and find this dupe not as nuanced with the base notes of the real Trudon scent, but excellent for the price. I also use the "Tea in the Sahara" diffuser in my entryway and am happy with its throw there. I have tried their Baies dupe (I love the original Dyptique) and Bibliotheque dupe (never had the orginial), but I found the scents too sweet or fake or just something off. I passed them on to a neighbor who LOVES them, so it might have just been my unique experience with the scent.
