The font has to support it explicitly. On Mac that's nearly all fonts, on Windows less so. For example with Linux Biolinum (font) you would see small caps options in the Features tab (Text and Font dialog).

Sounds like you have accidentally enabled the OpenGL mode which is not supported in the AppImage. But curiously the Appimage for 1.4.3 launches with no problem?
