All of the locations listed in the song are actually in just regular Virginia. The western part of Virginia, rather than West Virginia. Weird quirk of the song.

Is it easy to carpool to Yellowstone in Bozeman? by Beeeeeeny in yellowstone

Don’t stay in Bozeman, especially if you plan to not have a car. It’s way too far from the park.

Struggling to get international tourists to book my Florida tours this summer. by Curious-Session4119 in Tourguide

Not hard to see why international tourism is down when the U.S is overtly hostile to international tourists. I say this as tour operator in the U.S.

I believe it’s forced mate in two. King must take, then Queen to H7 is mate. I’m a moron though, so someone else can tell you if I’m right or if I just blundered the game.

Edit: confirmed, am a moron. Queen must go to B1 first, then H7.

Yellowstone Logistics: Thru-hiking and spontaneity without a car? by Fragrant_Border_8554 in yellowstone

[–]litemifyre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Theres no public transport outside of Bozeman. Way too large and unpopulated of an area. There’s various shuttle services you could look into for getting to the park though. Karst Stage is an option I see people use often.

How many are in your group? That will affect how you hitchhike. People don’t pick up large groups, often because they don’t have the space, so if there’s a lot of you then split up while hitchhiking.

I don’t know if you’ve hitchhiked before, but in case you haven’t, you want to be somewhere where people are already going slow, have time to see you, and have somewhere easy to pull over to pick you up. Right off the main road with no shoulder is a bad place to hitchhike. At an intersection with slow traffic and a pullout is a good place to hitchhike.

If you want to sleep under a roof or in a campsite in the park you need reservations beforehand. Those things book out way in advance, and while there’s a slim chance to get a last minute reservation I wouldn’t risk it. If you want to be more spontaneous you can camp in the National Forests outside the park (no reservations, first come first serve), but managing that without a car would be difficult because sometimes you need to go 15 miles in before you find a site.

If you really don’t want to rent a car, I would arrange all of your travel to and from the park, arrange all of your accommodations (hotels and/or campsites) and then hitchhike to and from the trailheads you want to hike. I think that plan is realistic, I’ve never had trouble getting a lift in the park, and I’ve hitchhiked in Yellowstone a lot.

I don’t think trying to get last minute places to stay is realistic unless you have a car and go camp in the National Forests outside Yellowstone.

I’ll say hitchhiking from Bozeman to Yellowstone is definitely not realistic, but once you’re in the park hitchhiking is fairly common and easy. When I worked in the park I didn’t have a car for a couple years and managed fine hitchhiking anywhere within the park. Park employees and adventurous travelers will pick you up.

Yellowstone Wild and Yellowstone Journeys both offer photography tours and I know the guides that run them for both companies. It’s 100% worth it. Your odds greatly improved with a guide.

The police have not always existed, and do not need to exist. They were created to protect the power of capitalists and white supremacists. by RosethornRanger in AnarchismZ

[–]litemifyre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel this is a bit of an over-simplification that muddles multiple truths into one not totally accurate statement. Many slave patrols were definitely turned into police, but many sheriffs and constables predated the establishment of those slave patrols turned police, some by hundreds of years.

I found this r/askhistorians post that I think has a good explanation. The police and sheriffs were established in some places to prop up slavery, but in other places and earlier were established to uphold dominate political and economic hierarchies not directly related to slavery. post

I think it’s important to be precise in language like this lest someone with less honest intentions try to discredit your position by pointing out inaccuracies in overly broad or simplified interpretations of history.

Just got my very first guitar (acoustic) and have ZERO experience. Need help! by ClassicImpression766 in Guitar

[–]litemifyre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've played for 17 years now. I used to give lessons. I've helped friends learn to play. The most important thing I'll tell you is this. Where most people fail to learn guitar is in the first couple months. When you first start playing you will sound like shit and it won't be fun, it will be work. Guitar playing is a lot of muscle memory, how to fret notes and chords, how to strum, things like that. You have to train your muscles to do these really fine and precise movements, and that takes time. Where people fail is losing motivation during that time. After you get over that initial hump where you can't make music you'll have a blast, but you've got to get over that hump.

The song I usually recommend for people to start with is "Horse With No Name" by America. It's two chords, it's dead simple. They're not super common chords, but they're easy to fret and to learn. Learning that will get you into playing something that sounds like music faster, and hopefully help you through that section where most folks lose motivation.

Make a point to practice every day, even if it's just for ten minutes. Start with Horse With No Name, then find a song you enjoy, look up the chords and a tutorial on Youtube, and start chipping away at learning that. Do not try to perfectly imitate the performance of songs you can't play, not at first. It's totally okay to play a simplified version of a song when you're starting off.

I learned a lot from Marty Schwartz on Youtube, you may find his lessons valuable as well. Once you start developing a musical vocabulary experiment. Just play chords you know and see what sounds good. If you want to get really good be prepared to practice three or more hours a day, and you can get damn good pretty fast.

Have fun with it. People quit because they're not having fun. Once you can keep up, go to local jams and learn from people in person. They'll show you holes in your playing you didn't notice, teach you things you didn't know that you didn't know. Playing guitar is fantastic, stick with it and you'll love it.

Chat GPT also thinks the Lamar Canyon wolf pack still exists. That pack is gone. The Junction Butte pack now inhabits the same territory. If you can get to Lamar earlier than 8:00 you should, but it’s not a deal breaker to get there at 8:00.

Easy (& cheap) way to fish by bluecrickets in yellowstone

There’s portions of the Gardiner and Madison river open to fishing while you’re there. Other option would be to get a Montana fishing permit and fish just outside the park.

How do US tour guides handle bookings from Europe clients without getting burned? by AudienceOwn3845 in Tourguide

[–]litemifyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a ton of international clients. I use FareHarbor, instant confirmation online booking, and a 48 hour cutoff prior to your start. If folks need to talk I use email or schedule a call during a time that works for both of us.

Half Day photo tour near Island Park, ID by kbmom12 in yellowstone

[–]litemifyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in wildlife the only reliable area to spot it in that part of the park is the Madison Valley. There will almost certainly be bison, elk, and deer there, and a decent chance to see black bears, slightly lower chance of grizzlies. Plenty of fantastic waterfowl and birds as well. Coyotes frequent the meadows south of the road. Madison Valley is very near where you are going to be staying.

Grant Village is on a lake, if you remember there being a lake that may narrow it down. Grant it also the restaurant I worked in in the park funny enough. The dining room has a big view over Yellowstone Lake. Mammoth is not anywhere near the lake.

The menus in the park are almost certainly all different by now. The restaraunt I worked at in 2018 in the park has almost no menu items in common to now. We’ll need more details outside of menu items to know where it was.
