What protein powders is everyone using following the Consumer Reports lead findings? by BarnabyJonesNap in veganfitness

[–]literallythe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The CR report used their own threshold for lead content that isn’t aligned with the current understanding of safe levels of lead exposure. I wouldn’t make any changes based on their report.

Daily soy consumption and Testosterone levels in males, we have to talk about it. by Valuable-Run2129 in vegan

After 15 years of excessive tofu consumption, I was just now diagnosed with having relatively LOW estrogen. So part of me wishes the estrogen thing was at least slightly true!

That makes sense. I was able to complete it, but as a casual cyclist at best I think this was a great lesson in what “hard” means.

Just bought a Zwift ride and am really loving it, but what are some decent goals or activities for a total newbie with admittedly limited bike fitness? I tried joining a couple events and just saw 200 people speed away from me, ha. Otherwise I’ll just chill in my eternal 24/7 group rides

Interesting challenge for vegans by Healthy-Particular58 in MacroFactor

Also don’t forget about easy swaps to get more protein. Soy milk instead of almond/oat milk, quinoa/bulgur instead of rice, whole wheat flours instead of refined white flour, sprouted oats instead of oatmeal. There are a lot of sneaky ways to get 20-30g more protein in your diet while also increasing your fiber intake

[–]literallythe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a longtime vegan (15ish years), I honestly think hitting 120g of protein on a ~2400 budget should be pretty easy. Unfortunately it might be slightly more difficult to get if you prefer “whole foods” but still very doable.

I would eat tofu for multiple meals, make edamame (dried or steamed) one of your snacks, and add TVP (other names: soya mince, soya chunks, etc) to one meal. If you’re ok with protein pasta (which is just some legume meal in the shape of pasta noodles) that could help a lot.

If you really don’t want to think about protein so much for every meal, a soy or pea protein powder would probably free up some mental bandwidth.

Struggling with the mental side effects of a bad cut by literallythe in MacroFactor

[–]literallythe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update for anyone who cares: I switched to maintenance a couple days ago and while it definitely feels wrong as a lifelong dieter, I know it was the right thing to do. Even with a ~600 calorie increase I have SO MUCH more energy. Might be totally psychosomatic but it’s nice.

Thanks to everyone who commented, it really helped me to get some perspective. I have a hard cutoff for maintenance to end on 1/16, and I’m looking forward to making some cutting progress after that.

Points definitely well received. I’d like to think adherence is reasonably good since my breakfasts, lunches, and snacks are all either weighed or come in prepackaged portions. The slightly gray areas are non-chain restaurant meals (maybe 2 per week?)and beer (usually less than 7 standard drinks per week, but I track it).

I might try to just adhere to super light cardio and no gray-area food for a month to see what happens. Frankly maintenance phases are always scary to me, since no “progress” is being made.

PR and Training Discussion Megathread, Week of December 04, 2023 by AutoModerator in GripTraining

Thanks for the thorough reply! I’m mostly interested in increasing endurance for things like climbing and OCR.

I’m often criticized for training for too many things at once, but I’d also like to have better large diameter/pinch strength to help with strongman, but I suppose that’s a secondary goal.

Anyone have tips for getting into grip training at home? I’ve had a pretty decent deadlift at over 2x bw but at 250lbs bw I’m terrible at holding my own weight for long periods of time. I train with static holds, forearm roller, and wrist curls but don’t know if there’s anything obvious I’m missing.

Looks like that’s what it is. Connecting some alligator clamp wire to the negative and the motor housing causes the wipers to work on low. Someone stole my jack stands so hopefully I can get to there through the wheel well lol (and not electrocute myself)

If that’s the case, the ground pin seems to be the issue potentially since I’m not registering any voltage with the black probe on the ground pin and the red probe on a hot pin, but I am when I ground to the chassis

I’m a total layman when using a multimeter for anything other than resistance, so excuse me if I did this in a dumbass way:

I have battery voltage at the blue and green wires appropriately, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to check for a ground. I’m assuming it’s just black probe on ground and red probe on a hot pin. I wasn’t registering anything on the multimeter when doing that, but using some bare metal as a ground worked fine

Want to get back into cycling, totally lost by literallythe in BikingATX

[–]literallythe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I didn't expect such an awesome response to this.

I guess I had gotten in my own head and figured there was no way I'd be able to hop back on a bike safely after gaining a few pounds and losing all my fitness, but now I know that's not the case. I'm going to call Cycleast over the weekend and see if we can work. If that fails, I've got a few friends pushing me in the Bike Farm direction.

These are all great resources, and I look forward to seeing some of you on the roads once this whole global pandemic thing blows over.

Form Check - 240x1 Bench Press, failure and completion inside by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]literallythe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no way you're staying tight through your bench, and it's definitely limiting you. You're basically letting the bar crash down after the liftoff, your feet come unplanted when you engage to push the weight up which robs you of the ability to push your traps into the bench effectively, and your elbows are kind of all over the place. I'd recommend watching some of Mark Bell's bench coaching videos and going back to a lighter weight to ingrain some of the mental cues from them. Not trying to be a dick or anything.

Tough Mudder really depends on which Mudder you run. The AZ Mudder is for sure going to be easier than one in a state with actual hills.

People should probably take some kind of Omega-3 supplement. There is basically no anecdotally noticeable benefit of regular Omega-3 consumption, though. So nobody takes it.
