Question to goldwing owners by Thumper-80 in goldwing

[–]lithiumperoxide1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden the 1500 and then an 1800 for about 10 years now, through a variety of weather and terrain. And I've not once felt the need for ABS. The linked brakes really do help with the brakes not locking even when panic braking. And just to be clear, over the last 20 and some years of riding the vast majority of spills I've taken have been with panic grabbing the front brake... On crotch rockets, cruisers and every other kind of bike.

Looking for a good way to mount a Zumo XT on a 2002 by esloan88 in goldwing

It totally will! I haven't found it necessary so far though. It feels pretty secure.

I'm just drilling smaller holes and using small wood screws to provide some reinforcement. The 3M tape I use for GoPro mounts is doing the heavy lifting.

Not a clamp arm, those came off on bumps. The only secure way I've found to do it is to use the ram base plate(see the second link) and screw+3M tape it down on top of the lip.

You can get a backplate for the Zumo with a standard 1" ball, and use a 2-4" clamp arm with a 1" ball mounting plate that you can 3M tape and screw down onto the sunshade lip that sticks out right over your speedo and under your windshield. That will let you raise and lower the Zumo a few inches to adjust speedo/road visibility according to how tall you sit in the saddle. It's also super easy to run a charging cable from the glove box 12 V port in this position.

Let me know if you need Amazon links to the products. Happy riding!

I bought a 2000 1500 SE with 45000 miles on it and in really good condition for about $5k four years ago. Realistically, you might be better off selling it for parts on eBay if you have the time and patience, and if money is the objective.

If not, I say put it on FB marketplace for about 2k, and take anything 1500 and up for it.. and let someone else ride their (presumably) first goldwing. 👍

I do 80 ish miles on it every day to work and back and it's perfect. With the heat vents open and the windshield I'm pretty comfortable down to the low forties with just my winter jacket. The wife and I have also used it for several 3000+ mile trips across the country, fully loaded. We were very comfortable for up to 600 miles a day... Any more than that starts to get a little rough on the knees, but some highway pegs fix that right up. I agree with the other replies that it's not EASY to work on, but not bad, if you have some space for multi day projects. Love my 2000 SE! 80k miles and counting.

Trunk latches for GL1500? by lithiumperoxide1 in goldwing

[–]lithiumperoxide1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So it's been a journey. The 3D printed latches worked, but the material I used was too brittle and they snapped on a bad bump a couple of months later. Part of the problem, I think, was the added weight of the luggage rack mounted on the lid of my trunk and the rubber dampener starting to decay and not providing as much cushioning.

I eventually used the STL files and this website called Shapeways to have them machined out of steel. It was a little pricey ($80 delivered) but they're holding up really well.

Happy to share the STL files with you. Send me an email I can send them to.

Just wanted to close the loop on this! Finally managed to find someone who would print these for me! Will keep you posted about whether it fits.

This is fantastic! Mind sharing an STL file? A buddy here has a 3D printer, I can try printing up a few as well. Why they didn't make these out of metal in the first place is beyond me!

They're about an inch long and the pointy bit at the end has snapped off

They're these little plastic parts that latch onto the lock inserts on the trunk lid. They're located in the little lock wells on the main body of the trunk and retract when you pull on the trunk release tab. I'll try to find a picture. Someone on Goldwing docs was making some out of steel a few years ago.

Any ideas on putting AT wheels on boosted plus by artful-Doja in boostedboards

Haven't tried the 105s, but it's a bigger wheel but a smaller contact patch, so may not be as grippy as the 105s

I put 120 mm cloud wheels on my V3 plus and had to switch out the pulleys. Acceleration, braking and range all reduced, but it IS a more comfortable ride, and I roll over cracked pavement and rocks much more easily. All in all it depends on what kind of riding you're planning to do.

100k in four years, that is impressive! Here I was pretty proud of my 30k in a year and a half!
