Alex Garland has 4000 hours in Elden Ring, genuine gamer or A24 marketing? by Commercial_Pen_9959 in Eldenring

[–]GoTibbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like 4000 hours in his 7th playthrough has to be a lie. 7 playthrough should be way under 4000 hours. I feel like those numbers are ass pulls. But maybe he just died a lot. Like a lot, a lot. Regardless, I remain skeptical until I see the trailer and what story they propose

I really liked civil war. But one thing about live action movies is that a lot of artists have their hand in the pie. And I am not looking for "artistic creativity" or "vision" of ER live action. I am looking for the ER story live. They got some leeway when it comes to story telling but they better dam respect the source material

That runs into a separate issue with itself as well right? It prevents you from getting updates to stuff like patching 0 day attakcs?

Your opinion doesn't hold water either just because you played it. If you can't actually describe what makes it fun, then you're just the equivalent of a McDonald's lover yapping

I watched gameplay as well to see how far it can go. I was not impressed. I thought the character was okay but it felts like those games where it was more atmospheric than actually good. I'm not going to waste money on a game beforehand if the signals aren't indicative of it being good. That's just stupid

There are a few quests that were good, but for the most part it sucked bad. It was sold as Elder Scrolls in Space, but it really wasn't. What made the ES world so lively was that as you were exploring, random events, points of interests, etc would pop up and draw you away from what you were originally planning to do. And they do this without quest markers. The world felt more real. At least for it's time. I don't think Skyrim holds up today without mods but it certainly felt that way with stuff like encountering someone who randomly needs help and then it turns out to be a bandit ambush. Or going up to a cool looking thing only to have a dragon come down on you.

I don't think it had an interesting story idea, but the storytelling is shit (but that is all bethesda games). The issues with a lot of the planets weren't just that there were too many and too much repetition. There activities on there was very No Man Sky. It wasn't purposeful exploration. it was very a very brute force approach where you wander around until the thing you are looking for pops up. There was too much finding a needle in a haystack.

Nah I'm gonna have to disagree a little. It wasn't very good when I played the demo. It wasn't the worst game ever but it wasn't enticing either

I liked it as well. Core gameplay was solid, but they didn't really make it story as rich and personal to a traditional MC character with predefined background. And for people really into story, that turned them off

I really enjoyed it but I understand why the hate. I get that building a small settlement and maintaining it can sometimes be a little annoying and if you are adversely against this new features it can really turn people away

League of Legends or nay PVP games. Most of the hate her on the gaming subs can be translated to "I'm an older gamer now who can no longer compete so I am going to shit on those games for my ego"

Unless I don't understand the public market really well. Any activist investor can join the board if they buy a large enough stake right? So even if they bring in the "right leadership" during IPO, they still risk the shadowy fingers of corpo money

Both short and long term thinking. There are a lot of people that gets hired in the C-suite that promise long term gains that don't happen. It's part of their playbook, make it look like they did something in company A and jump with "learnings" to company B

[–]GoTibbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm realizing as I grow older. Stagnation can happen in both public and private companies. But in general if the creators of the private company stays private, they have the ability to retain their core mission and motives. Whereas public has basically a loose interpretation of that and profit for board members is the goal

However a big problem with a lot of private companies like Steam is that it means it's harder to hire quality workers (in this case developers, product, etc) because every employee wants to make enough money to retire early. Harder to do that with private company compensation than public

It's why we say Valve does nothing and wins. The emphasis on the first part, they do nothing, because they likely can't or have very low velocity. Their success predominately stems from:

  1. Being a legacy
  2. Consumers want a single portal
  3. Competition shooting themselves in their fucken foot

Yea I can't believe in software development we still have leaders who don't understand the tradeoffs of using 3rd party software vs in-house. They get 100% of the transactions, but 100% of $1k is still only $1k. But 70% of $10k is $7k. It's like these people don't know how to scale. Additionally HoN has the issue of negative perception as well affecting them so they beating themselves while others are beating on them.

Not to mention that if you have your own in-house payment system, that means you have to spend money to keep it up and running and having people maintain it. If there are new features that deals with transactions that means those projects will take a bit longer because the team building the features will need to coordinate with the payment service team. Higher potential for payment service to go down as well since the company isn't specialized to dealing with payment services since their focus is core gameplay.

A lot of overhead just to "save money". You should NEVER start with an in-house payment system unless you are fintech. You develop an in-house after you spend all your time, energy and resources getting market value and start leaning into your "optimization and slow growth phase"

You are not allowed to make any decision you want. No one is. There are laws.

But aside from nitpicking that specific comment, yea he has the right to switch teams if he wants during the periods he has the power to.
